COD5 video premiere approaching

Exclusively live on Marketplace this weekend.

The first footage of the next instalment in the Call of Duty series will be shown exclusively on Xbox LIVE this weekend.

Call Of Duty World At War is being developed by Treyarch whilst Modern Warfare's creators, Infinity Ward, presumably take a well earned rest. It's purported to be a darker, grittier game, swapping some of the 'Boy's Own Adventure' stylings of the previous games for a sense of real endangerment. In fact, according to Treyarch head Mark Lamir, "This is a scarier Call of Duty than we've ever seen."

Speaking to Official Xbox Magazine, Lamir also talked about the changes they'd made to the AI system to reflect the battlefield tactics of the Imperial Japanese army. Apparently there will be less hiding in trenches and flanking manoeuvres, more hiding in trees and suicidal sword charges.

The game will use an improved version of the engine which powers the truly excellent CoD4, with lighting and physics getting a facelift. A fire propagation model features too, allowing the new flamethrower weapon to toast all and sundry.

World At War has had a significantly longer development time than CoD3, being boiled on the ideas hob for twice as long as its elder cousin. Everyone is being a bit coy about details so far, especially as World At War is somewhat optimistically scheduled for this Christmas, but we do know that vehicles will feature again and that co-op campaigning has been introduced. Local co-op will be a 2 person split-screen affair, whilst online will be a hairy foursome.

World At War will be available on 360, PS3, PC and Wii.

    Oh joy another ww2 shooter.
  • agparrot #2 4 years ago

    An *improved* version of the CoD4 engine sounds interesting, as does fire propogation and online co-op.

    Not sure about 'hiding in trees and suicidal sword charges' unless you can shoot them if you have spotted them half a mile away by virtue of having great pixel-spotting skills. Will be a bit disappointed if it is just scripted 'leaping out from cover and making you press LB and RB a lot'.

    From seeing the screen shots, it seems to be suffering from that vile disease of "over-bloom". I really don't hold much confidence with this title as it is following the age old equation:

    WWII + Shiny HD Graphics + Generic Multiplayer + Treyach at the helm = Call of Duty: letsdropthefive

    I'm guessing "hard at work for Call Of Duty 6" would be a better bet!

    As it's going to the under used pacific this time I'm not so uninterested as I was about the WWII setting so looking forward to having a look this weekend.

    I think alot of people are a bit overly hard on Treyach, although I still think COD2 had the edge over 3 the fact that I read recently that Treyach actually made COD3 in 8 months has got me looking forward to this now they have been given the proper time, I just hope they manage to make WW2 interesting again!
  • paulf #7 4 years ago

    i wonder if we'll have endlessly respawning enemies in this one? tough task following cod4 though (especially multiplayer) but i think it will still sell loads due to the strength of that title
  • bdaggers #8 4 years ago

    Treyarch = No Buy

    Infinity Ward = Buy

    We all saw the total cock up that was COD3. The rule of COD is "even good, odd bad".

    Mark my words !!!
  • bad09 #9 4 years ago

    A total cock up is a bit harsh bdaggers, it was a good game, just not as good as COD2.
  • JimmyC #10 4 years ago

    I don't think i've seen this referred to as Call of Duty 5 anywhere official, which makes me think that Activision are seeing it more as a spin off than a real sequel. Which would mean Infinity Ward are working on the REAL CoD5...

    I thought that was the rule of Star Trek movies?
  • monkie_king #16 4 years ago

    onezeonx: because then it wouldn
    't come out this year, and Activision wouldn't have their annual opportunity to pimp the brand for all its worth.
  • beastmaster #17 4 years ago

    having seen what Games TM has said about this I'm looking forward to it. Much longer dev time too. Let's hope it's a good 'un.

    Did the Imperial Japanese army use giant enemy crabs?

    I've said it once and I'll say it again. This sounds far too similar to the epic failure that was MoH: Rising Sun.

    - Cod 3 was fine
    - Cod 5 will be fine
  • bdaggers #22 4 years ago

  • Danoxth #23 4 years ago

    Co-op will suit me fine, especially if recent previews of Mercs 2 is to be believed.
  • t8yman #24 4 years ago

    @benno

    cod3 was not fine, it was dogshit.
  • GamesConnoisseur #25 4 years ago

    COD3 is as bad as Hour of Victory? As turdlike as Blacksite? Or as awful as Haze?! Its certainly no COD2 but still reasonably good.

    To settle argument, go over at Metacritic which gave it 83 percent (X360 version and 82 for PS3) which is above average actually!

    /Expecting annoyance from PS3 owners who may be taking this as a gravest insult for being a 3 ( or 2 if using PS3 version) percent point better than EG's MSG4!

    Am I the only one who wonders why they are announcing it exclusively through xblm? With this being lower profile and all, did activision choose the easy way and make this (timed) exclusive?
  • Mr_Brown #29 4 years ago

    Cheers for the heads up, Ill now make an effort to avoid it now I know its approaching.
  • Bangaioh #30 4 years ago

    Yes, I bought COD3 and sold it after a few levels... it wasn't good at all, crap if you ask me. Boring and repetitive.
    Most of all why go back to WWII after an amazing game like COD4?!

    Most of all why go back to WWII after an amazing game like COD4?!

    This was in development before the fourth game even came out. Activision didn't know how well people would react to a "modern" CoD so they commissioned a WWII title as a "safe" game to go back to if CoD 4 flopped.
  • bhutz #32 4 years ago

    @anyone

    Have any vids leaked onto youtube yet...had a look but couldn't find anything except for fake vids and a gay 1 min vid showing a guy with a flame thrower!
  • bioreit #33 4 years ago

    "Oh joy another ww2 shooter."

    Oh joy. Another person who is not interested in a game, posting a in a thread purely about the game they're not interested in, just to tell us how disinterested they are. How original. What a magnificent use of time.

    I liked CoD3 - not as much as 2 and certainly not as much as 4, but it was still a decent game. I liked the vehicles in multiplayer, as well as the ability to play split-screen, un-ranked multiplayer against online opponents - both of which were features not present in 4.

    I also liked CoD2: Big Red One, which was also developed by Treyarch, which was also good fun.

    But please, all you experts with your crystal balls go right ahead and predict what a game is going to be like even before any screenies or vids are released. And I'll go right on thinking you're a bunch of muppets who would excel at being reactionary hacks for the Daily Fail.
  • t8yman #34 4 years ago

    @bioreit

    screenies have been released, great journalism from you there mate.
  • Lotek #35 4 years ago

    I thought all the COD's were good. No complaints. I didn't feel robbed of my money after i played any of them. I'll be getting this. But..... i will be looking forward to the next Infinity Ward installament if there is one..... COD 4 = best of a good bunch!
  • bioreit #36 4 years ago

    @ t8yman

    "screenies have been released, great journalism from you there mate."

    Not a journo, never said I was, so don't actually see what your point is there. You are a muppet though.

    And none of the people in this comments thread who have been stating as fact that CoD5 will be crap have neither mentioned, referenced nor even implied that any screenshots aided them in their decision-making process.

    As are they.
  • Fab4 #37 4 years ago

    t8yman - you should learn the difference between opinion and fact.
  • Salt_The_Fries #38 4 years ago

    I'm not too keen on the setting. I loved COD4 for breaking the convention. I'd be keen on WWII game, if it was done in Operation Flashpoint or ArmA: Armed Assault approach.
