Child of Eden compatible with pads

PS3/360 Mizuguchi title out in Q1 2011.

Child of Eden, Tetsuya Mizuguchi's stunning new conduct-'em-up shooter, was one of the more interesting motion-control games announced at E3, but a preview session with the director yesterday revealed the game will also support control pad input on both the PS3 and Xbox 360.

A "spiritual sequel" to Rez, Child of Eden sees you "purifying" viruses infesting a series of internet archives using a mechanic that a lot of people would classify as "shooting". Like Mizuguchi's previous synaesthesia classic, players move a cursor over targets to highlight them, before releasing shots in a single burst.

The game's director demonstrated this in real style at Ubisoft's press conference earlier in the week using the Xbox 360's Kinect camera, but backstage at Ubisoft's booth he played the game using a controller as well as the new motion control device, and said that the final version would support both methods. There was no sign of the alleged PlayStation Move version, however.

However you choose to play it, Child of Eden looks pretty incredible. Check out our Child of Eden preview to find out why.

VERY smart move. I 'd hate to miss out on the spiritual sequel to one of my favourite games because I can't justify buying an expensive peripheral for one game.

yeah must admit i would have bought this whether it needed a special controller or not.

From the looks of how well it uses Kinect, why would you want to?

I'm getting Kinect anyway and this is the game I'm getting it for, I'll just have to use it to control my dashboard in the meantime :p

    @altitude2k

If the 300ms lag is real then I would not want to be using kinect.

Nice, hopefully it will have a watch mode or music visualisation function.

A fast, precise and well-tested device called "a controller"... It work prefectly, eveyrone got one now, has rumble (something that some people suddent doesnt need!) and you can even use it while sitting down. What's not to like about controller-input ?
I can't see ANY reason to buy the expensive Kinect for this.

Rather than jumping to conclusions, I'll be interested to see what the reviews say about the different control options for this. Likely that I'll buy the game, beiong a big fan of Rez, but this could be the title to make me plash out on Kinect.

In short: if reviews state that Kinect actually enhanses the experience, then I'll buy in to it. I can see how this title could pull you in with the controllerless design, but that would depend on how well the tech' works. Let's see on release shall we.....

Since when is using a stick to control a reticule fast or precise? In terms of control this is essentially a lightgun game - would you rather use a pad to control your lightgun games?

Curious how standing in your living room waving your hands with no feedback is going to enhance the experience. The controller vibrates in rhythm to the music and Mizuguchi himself suggested "vibrating bracelets" for the controller challenged.

If this game is truly awesome, and as long as you can sit down while playing with Kinect i *might* be tempted to buy it. But Kintect will need to be totally flawless in all games before I will buy it. So far initial impressions from E3 haven't exactly been great.

Good news indeed, as it was the only Kinect game that I wanted to play, and seeing as I dont have to buy that to play this...win win!

Did anyone honestly think this would be Kinect only?
  • Sonic_D #18 2 years ago

As much as I like to think I won't, I know I will end up getting both Kinect and Move. I suspect I will enjoy playing this game with Move most.

Can you sit down while you play it with Kinect though?

EDIT: You can't! I still can't believe EG hasn't put up a news story about this. Currently you can't sit down and use the camera for anything. Not even menu navigation. MS are saying they are looking to have that particular use ready for couch users by launch but won't commit to people being able to play games while seated. All the camera is going to be good for is party games and voice command (which I think could have some cool implementations in games). At the rumoured $150/£100 price point I can't see it taking off if that is it is going to offer.
