Call of Duty 5 to feature 'new theatre'
Series will return to PS2 and Wii.
Activision has confirmed that a fifth instalment in the Call of Duty series is on the way - revealing that it'll be set in "a new military theatre".
Like COD4 it'll be released for PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and DS. And this time round there will be PS2 and Wii versions, too.
The news came in a conference call after Activision published its latest financial results, as reported by Gamespot. CEO Mike Griffith told listeners, "We'll bring the intensity of the recent Call of Duty: Modern Warfare title to a new military theatre, to engage our significantly larger user base which nearly doubled last year as new users came into the franchise."
Activision also revealed the Call of Duty 4 engine is being used for the new James Bond movie tie-in. The game is due out this autumn, which is also when new film The Quantum of Solace will be released. It's being developed by COD3 developer Treyarch, also responsible for the Spider-Man 3 game.
The publisher has yet to give a release date for Call of Duty 5, or confirm whether Infinity Ward is developing. But seeing as the last COD game they made sold 7 million copies worldwide, it seems likely.

I hope the game actually pans and Activision learn a lesson from it. It never good to rinse a franchise and people are getting very clued up that Infinity Ward did not develop Call of Duty 3. Don't get me wrong COD3 was not a bad game however it was just not Call of Duty.
At the end of the day I am a firm believer that good games take time to develop and polish. The fact that Call of Duty 4 was so good was because it took four years to develop. Unheard of in the industry these days as many developers want to make a quick buck by using middleware to build thier game on.
So Activision if you are listening please give the sole rights to develop Call of Duty to Infinity Ward. The fact that I only have Call of Duty 1, 2, expansion pack and 4 should tell you enough. They came up with the franchise after jumping ship from developer 2015 when they developed Medal of Honor Allied Assualt on the PC for a reason. And we all know how good Medal of Honor Allied Assault on the PC was.
Please don't get all cocky because you sold 7 million copies of COD4
Because I guarntee you won't sell 7 million copies of COD5 even if Treyarch try to emulate what Infinity Ward have done with COD4

I know lots of people are happy about this, but CoD was always the best of the WWII shooters and I'll be sad if we've seen the last of them.
edit: OK, just read the comment above, but in a way it's even sadder if the CoDs set in WWII are Treyarch games, while Infinity Ward have moved on to a new setting.

Good news they have confirmed COD5!
COD4 was deffo the stand out title for me last year.
Lets hope they build on the engine/physics/interaction for COD5.
Sweet!

I thought this happened already? Didn't they announce / wasn't there a rumour about this a couple of weeks ago? They canned a Studio because of it, right?
Anyway, my bet goes on Call of Duty 5: Napoleonic Warfare. \0/

It was debunked, natch. A 3rd person COD game was in development, but it was canned (along with the studio) because it was truly awful, apparently.

Infinity Ward did a fantastic job on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360; why don't the focus on the series stay there since the PS2 and Wii cannot capture the amount high quality game experience that CoD4 offered.
*sighs*

Anyway, as long as they actually make a decent campaign for this one, unlike the atrocious one in CoD 4, then I'm happy. The mp in CoD 4 is great fun but the single player was a big let down for me.

There's 120 million ps2's out there.. that's more than DOUBLE all the 360's, ps3's and wii's combined...
