Call of Duty 5 to feature 'new theatre' News

PC PlayStation 2 DS Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii
News by Ellie Gibson

9 May, 2008

Activision has confirmed that a fifth instalment in the Call of Duty series is on the way - revealing that it'll be set in "a new military theatre".

Like COD4 it'll be released for PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and DS. And this time round there will be PS2 and Wii versions, too.

The news came in a conference call after Activision published its latest financial results, as reported by Gamespot. CEO Mike Griffith told listeners, "We'll bring the intensity of the recent Call of Duty: Modern Warfare title to a new military theatre, to engage our significantly larger user base which nearly doubled last year as new users came into the franchise."

Activision also revealed the Call of Duty 4 engine is being used for the new James Bond movie tie-in. The game is due out this autumn, which is also when new film The Quantum of Solace will be released. It's being developed by COD3 developer Treyarch, also responsible for the Spider-Man 3 game.

The publisher has yet to give a release date for Call of Duty 5, or confirm whether Infinity Ward is developing. But seeing as the last COD game they made sold 7 million copies worldwide, it seems likely.

Hopefully Treyarch have been too busy ruining the new Bond game to have had time to develop this.

Call ofDuty - Pacific Front, I bet. Pretty sure it's Treyarch again, too - I think Infinity Ward are being given 2 years for each proper good CoD game.

Treyarch are developing Call of Duty 5 and it will be based in World War II

I hope the game actually pans and Activision learn a lesson from it. It never good to rinse a franchise and people are getting very clued up that Infinity Ward did not develop Call of Duty 3. Don't get me wrong COD3 was not a bad game however it was just not Call of Duty.

At the end of the day I am a firm believer that good games take time to develop and polish. The fact that Call of Duty 4 was so good was because it took four years to develop. Unheard of in the industry these days as many developers want to make a quick buck by using middleware to build thier game on.

So Activision if you are listening please give the sole rights to develop Call of Duty to Infinity Ward. The fact that I only have Call of Duty 1, 2, expansion pack and 4 should tell you enough. They came up with the franchise after jumping ship from developer 2015 when they developed Medal of Honor Allied Assualt on the PC for a reason. And we all know how good Medal of Honor Allied Assault on the PC was.

Please don't get all cocky because you sold 7 million copies of COD4

Because I guarntee you won't sell 7 million copies of COD5 even if Treyarch try to emulate what Infinity Ward have done with COD4

So has the CoD franchise given up on WWII completely?

I know lots of people are happy about this, but CoD was always the best of the WWII shooters and I'll be sad if we've seen the last of them.

edit: OK, just read the comment above, but in a way it's even sadder if the CoDs set in WWII are Treyarch games, while Infinity Ward have moved on to a new setting.

Oh dear.

So it'll be shite again then? Adding smae-gameplay versions on Wii and PS2 is pretty much the same as putting the game in a coffin and lowering it into the ground. No effing way you'll get the same gameplay across all formats without severely crippling the new-gen versions. Lowest common denominator, etc.

They should set it in London. Mad terrorists from a country thats NOT arabic have invaded the city and taken over, and the army are called in.. Accurately model the city, loads of set pieces of buildings under attack and key areas to defend.. Why does a game need to be spread over many countries.. Wars can be fought in cities now.

I thought this happened already? Didn't they announce / wasn't there a rumour about this a couple of weeks ago? They canned a Studio because of it, right?

Anyway, my bet goes on Call of Duty 5: Napoleonic Warfare. \0/

I it’s going to be Treyarch for COD5. After the mass success of COD4 I wish they would skip a year or so and leave it to IW. I don’t think Treyarch are a bad developer it’s just not good to farm it every year.

It was debunked, natch. A 3rd person COD game was in development, but it was canned (along with the studio) because it was truly awful, apparently.

As soon as I saw the words 'PS2' and Wii', I let out a groan.

Infinity Ward did a fantastic job on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360; why don't the focus on the series stay there since the PS2 and Wii cannot capture the amount high quality game experience that CoD4 offered.

*sighs*

Let's put it this way: if it is indeed being developed by IW (it will be revealed sooner or later) then they'll probably have won another purchase from me - if not then I'll wait for some honest reviews first... Either way, the inclusion of PS2/Wii versions is not a good sign, in my opinion.

COD3 was a bad game; the storyline was soporific, the code buggy as hell and the execution and polishing very poor indeed. Treyarch turn round COD games in around a year whereas IW take two; hence why the Treyarch games are buggy tat. Activision want to rinse the franchise and unfortunately although us forumites know the difference the general public are unlikely to.

If you value the COD series DON'T BUY TREYARCH.

Skooch, Treyarch turned CoD3 around in under a year, because they bailed out Activision whenever IW told them they couldnt/wouldnt make a CoD game every year. Its Treyarch stepping in that gave IW the 2 years it took to make CoD4, and they'll have had 2 years to make CoD5 when it comes out.

If you value the COD series DONT BECOME A FANBOY.

I love the Treyarch games just as much as the IW ones. The multiplayer on CoD 3 stood all over the mp in CoD 2.

Anyway, as long as they actually make a decent campaign for this one, unlike the atrocious one in CoD 4, then I'm happy. The mp in CoD 4 is great fun but the single player was a big let down for me.
