Bubble and KOF '94 on VC

Pay lots for the past.

Nintendo's Virtual Console is abubble and apunch with new releases once again this Friday as Bubble Bobble and The King of Fighters '94 arrive for download unassisted by additional made-up adjectives.

Bubble Bobble is the NES version of Taito's fondly remembered platform game, and therefore costs 500 Wii Points (approx GBP 3.50 / EUR 5), and sees players popping and pushing bubbles in the dinosauric roles of Bub and Bob, complete with two-player mode and - even more of a blast from the past - a password system for saving your progress! No expense spent! Gawp in amazement at the Bubble Bobble Virtual Console screenshot gallery for additional excitement.

Meanwhile, The King of Fighters '94 is a NeoGeo game and therefore comes with a bizarrely huge 900 Wii-Point price-tag (that's approximately GBP 6.30 / EUR 9), and allows you to beat one another up using characters from various of SNK's other fighting series including Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury and Ikari Warriors. We've got a King of Fighters '94 screenshot gallery too, you know.

Watch out for official verdicts from official Virtual Console Roundup man Dan Whitehead tomorrow.

Loved Bubble Bobble in the arcade, how does the NES version compare?

I'd *like* to buy Bubble Bobble but I've bought it a few times on different console and it'll never ever have the magic it had when I used to play it on the Speccy when I was young. Shame. Best left to nostalgia me thinks.

waffleaber - I'd say favourably. but then I liked Bubble Bobble Double Shot on the DS, so what do I know.

Got Bubble Bobble the second I saw it appear just after midnight last night. It being a NES conversion -and- the PAL version, it's quite slow I find, but still mighty enjoyable. Something to play co-op with my sister.

Still think they need some kind of trial of these. Some of the older titles havent aged well !

And they need to get more 64 stuff there ! Whilst there getting thru more than say XBLA im sure theres less effort required for them - sticking a rom on a fileserver somewhere !

Is it me, or have VC games got more expensive?
  • DanWhitehead #11 5 years ago

The NeoGeo games were introduced at 900 points, and some of the titles during the Hanabi Festival had their prices inflated, but prices are still 1000 for N64, 800 for SNES/Megadrive, 600 for TG16, 500 for NES.

Bubble Bobble? You mean one of the multitude games I got in a Taito retro compilation for the PS2 at a cost not far above the cost of the game on VC?

    Nintendiots are sheep.

At least with XBLA games you get online play included, maybe thats why they take longer to get released compared to VC games as VC games are pretty much straight ports!

KoF 94 is a nice collection piece for historical reasons (and still a good game), but personally I'd wait for 98. It's all the KoF you'll ever need.

Not sure about the price though. Even if it's illegal, they must know that these games are available on the internet for free and they have to compete with that. I'm not saying charge pennies, but come on! Who's actually buying this stuff at that price?

Even if it's illegal, they must know that these games are available on the internet for free and they have to compete with that.

Why should they? Like you say, it's illegal. New games are available on the internet for free as well - so is music, so are films. It's only with old games that people continue to wheel that argument out like it actually means something.

While I agree that the argument that these games can be obtained illegally for free is invalid, I think a comparison to retro collections like Taito Legends, which gave you twenty-something games for the price of two or three of these downloadables, does suggest that we are being horribly ripped off.

Where can you buy these games cheaper though?
Most of them are cartridges that sell on ebay for more than VC, then add postage.

    Another boring selection.
