Huge range of PlayStation 2 Classics storm European PlayStation store

Mass Effect 3 and Binary Domain demos also land today.

A huge range of PlayStation 2 Classics will be made available to download from the EU PlayStation Store today, Sony has revealed.

27 titles are initially on offer, including God Hand, Maximo and SSX On Tour.

BioWare's Mass Effect 3 demo also releases today on PlayStation 3, alongside a sample version of Sega tactical shooter Binary Domain.

This week's PS3 sale brings savings on Mafia 2 DLC and Far Cry 2. PlayStation Plus subscribers get the latter completely free.

You can also now download Grand Theft Auto 4. It's priced £19.99, or £27.99 for the Complete Edition, which includes the game's DLC episodes.

That 'PS2 Classics' label is looking a bit inappropriate now. More Gitaroo Men and fewer Kim Possibles please!
  • darkmorgado #2 3 months ago

But I thought "noone wants to play PS2 games on a PS3"?

That's what you said when you removed backwards compatability.
  • PixelPirate #3 3 months ago

    hmmmm

Hannah Montana - Rock Out the Show

    or God Hand.

    such a hard choice.... /sarcasm
  • Retroid #4 3 months ago

That PS2 port-oh-matic must've been left on overnight! Nice to see PS2 stuff start to appear outside those 'HD Collections'.
  • Retro_ #5 3 months ago

Looking forward to trying that Binary Domain demo, My pre-order hangs in the balance.
  • Darksouls13 #6 3 months ago

craploads of stuff (especially PS2 classics) for everyone. Wish every week was like this :-)
  • HarryPalmer #7 3 months ago

    GOD HAND.

    Currently playing Demon's Souls.

    Masochistic.
  • manic_mouse #8 3 months ago

Wait, if these can be played under emulation on the PS3's lacking PS2 backwards compatibility then surely they should be able to play discs too?

Hopefully the PS Vita gets support for these, alongside PSone classics soon.
  • MavSkipper #9 3 months ago

    +1 for Gitarooman

Need a sequel for that. :)
  • Stevehd #10 3 months ago

The House of the Dead III (£4.79/€2599)
A bit pricey if you buy outside of the uk!

The House of the Dead III (£4.79/€2599)

I dunno, obvious price gouging for our € loving friends, either that or a missing decimal point. Will be picking up a few games although a lot of those PS3 games seem a bit shovelware-ish.
  • Ace-Reject #12 3 months ago

Nice to see them add Playtation 2 classics to the store, luckily i kept my Playstation 2 and games
  • erp #13 3 months ago

    @darkmorgado Totally agree! Hmmmph.

@JoeGBallad I know what you mean - the choice of games is... interesting, to say the least. I wonder whether the accuracy of the emulator is holding them back in terms of which games they can get working on it, and therefore which games they can actually release?

(Or perhaps all the true classics are being held back for full HD remakes? And if so, maybe that's not a bad thing?)
  • lucky_jim #14 3 months ago

Gungrave was ok, if it's the game I'm thinking of, and I've been looking forward to God Hand, but nothing else grabs me from that PS2 list (perhaps SSX but I'd rather wait to see if Tricky ever turns up).

Still, Far Cry 2 for free is pretty sweet.
  • Whitster #15 3 months ago

I definately dispute the qualification of some of those PS2 games as classics. That said, the possibility of these being playable on PSV at some point is promising, especially considering how heavily Square supported the PSone classics. I may get FFXII on my PSV sooner than I thought.
  • paulf #16 3 months ago

    rock band gets rickrolled !
  • TravisTouchdown #17 3 months ago

Whoa whoa whoa; Quack Attack?! That's a Megadrive game! For 8 quid!
  • ShiftBreaker #18 3 months ago

    Wow. That's a lot of PS2 games.

I mean, I don't WANT any, but that's not the point. It's a fine start. More importantly though, Rock Band DLC and Mass Effect 3.
  • TravisTouchdown #19 3 months ago

    @TravisTouchdown

    You're thinking of QuackShot, retard.
  • simsini #20 3 months ago

The 'PSP Pirates Essentials Bundle' shows Sony have finally given up the fight for PSP.
  • zythe #21 3 months ago

Hmmm... Buy those PS2 games digitally for up to £8... or just buy them for 49p from my local Blockbuster store and play on my original 60GB PS3...
  • PeacockDreams #22 3 months ago

Yessss!!! The critically acclaimed and universally praised 'Chicken Little' is being released for PS3, surely this title alone embodies the name 'Playstation 2 Classic'!

One can only dream what may be round the corner.
  • andrewsqual #23 3 months ago

@darkmorgado No nobody wanted it when nobody bought a PS3 back when 60gbs had PS2 compatibility. Ironic that its the same bitches who moaned the PS3 cost too much, well its the same people who wanted PS2 playback when it was gone. If the PS4 and the Xbox 361 launched tomorrow and the PS4 was 700 quid and the 361 was 300 quid, I would still get the PS4 because the 60gb was such a well made machine.
  • Toothball #24 3 months ago

Oh right, they had more on the way than the batch in the other post about this. Let's just hope they keep it up.
  • javvyman #25 3 months ago

Why are some games more than double the price of others?

£7.99 for a game that has not been updated in any way is always going to be overpriced. These should be sold at £5.99 max.
  • Nodka #26 3 months ago

Maximo vs The Arm of Zin was great, one of may favourite PS2 games, if buying ignore the first Maximo game the sequel is superior in every way.

Shame the franchise was killed off.
  • sonicyoda #27 3 months ago

Mate! Gungrave Overdose AND Road Trip Adventure for £4 each! Well that's me sorted this evening!
  • DavidBoring #28 3 months ago

i hope we get some of the late ps2 gems that are available in the us store - like odin's sphere
  • fletch273 #29 3 months ago

The shop near me is selling PS2 games brand new for €40. I don't think they've sold many.
  • 32768Colours #30 3 months ago

I never owned a PS2, but after googling the list above, it doesn't seem like many of those games are considered classics.

To me it seems more like they've just released every PS2 game they've managed to get clearance for so far.

Godhand I must buy however, if only based on the brilliant "review" offered up by VideoGaiden. The Maximo games and SSX sound tempting too.
  • Zebula77 #31 3 months ago

Hmf, was hoping Jak & Daxter would appear today (it's out on the US store and for some reason I'm unable to use my credit card there).

Will definitely check out the ME3 demo and possibly pick up SSX On Tour. (or was that the rubbish one?)

  • retr0gamer #34 3 months ago

@JoeGBallad: Your comment would work a lot better if it wasn't for the fact that Kim Possible: What's the Switch, like Gitaroo Man, is one of the systems hidden gems. You should give the game a go. It's far better than it has any right to be and is one of the best 2D platformers ever made with some gorgeous visuals.
  • JoeGBallad #35 3 months ago

@retr0gamer haha Ok, I probably shouldn't have jumped to conclusions about it and chosen another example. If it's as good as you say it is I might have to give it a try. Love 2D platformers that look pretty.

Very tempted to get Road Trip Adventure and Seek & Destroy again. Those are both rough diamonds in the PS2's bargain bucket range, and I never did get the chance to play them fully back on the PS2 (I owned both, think they got traded in).

Also, another thumbs up for Kim Possible. Its a slightly easy, but really really solid platformer. Well worth a few quid.
  • Cadence #38 3 months ago

    Gradius V please!!
  • flattie #39 3 months ago

I'm not interested in playing any PS2 games on my 42" HDTV; they all look awful to my eyes. However, the chance of being able to download and play something like Final Fantasy 12 or Dragon Quest 8 on a Vita is something that has me very interested in that console.

The Vita is doing very little to woo me from a content perspective at the moment (few new consoles do) - the promise of opening up the PSOne and PS2 back catalogues is something that would turn me from passively interested to seriously considering.
  • berelain #40 3 months ago

God Hand is pretty much the only thing worth even playing out of that bunch of PS2 'classics.' (EDIT: Though I see the Kim Possible comments. I will withhold judgement on that.) If the PS2 game selection is going to be as sorry as the PS1 selection, Sony might as well not bloody bother.

Also... anyone know if these are fullscreen 60hz versions of the games? Or will some still be horrible bordered 50hz versions of the games? I know a lot of later PS2 games had built in support for both formats (and widescreen!) but many earlier games didn't...

  • patch #41 3 months ago

I'm just giving my 2 cents and trying not to justify removing backward compatibility, but...

Rumours at the time (and may even have been confirmed) was that hardware BC was removed as they could actually give away a PS2 with every PS3 and save money. Software BC was slowly dropped because it was costing too much to make the PS3 compatible with more games (via firmware update). Neither are good news if you're a PS2 fan, so still bad bad Sony.

As to why they're releasing so many PS2 titles on the store, again only rumours, but they may or may not be playable on Vita at some stage... for about 2 months before they decide it's too expensive and stop doing it :)
  • apoc_reg #42 3 months ago

    No Yakuzas or Personas Boo

But good to see SOME titles at least
  • Miths #43 3 months ago

I'm certainly not going to say no to FC2 for free :). Despite it's flaws I loved it but traded it in when I was done with it - I wouldn't mind a bit of sightseeing again in that beautiful game world.
  • sonicyoda #44 3 months ago

@toy_brain I did the exact same thing with both games! I played Road Trip way more than Seek and Destroy, but I think they're gonna have to be re-bought ;)
  • Architect_z #45 3 months ago

    Wheres Gitaroo man!?

We should start a petition to get Gitaroo man on PS3. That game is so classic, I still play Gitarooman lives on my PSP. ^_^

it seems they realized at SCE that "noone wants to play PS2 games on a PS3" so they changed it to "everyone wants to pay for PS2 games on a PS3"
  • wizlon #47 3 months ago

@retr0gamer Holy wall jumping ginger-chick retr0gamer, Kim Possible looks pretty good. £8 might be a bit much though. Might just stick with SSX.
  • CloudXIV #48 3 months ago

I still have two working ps2 consoles (an old fat american model and a slim PAL) and a backwards compatible ps3 so they can shove their downloadable ps2 games where the sun don't shine. I won't pay twice, I'll play my disc copies. :p
  • Snufkin #49 3 months ago

I'll have me a bit of House of the Dead III ta very much. Been wanting a 'light gun' game for my Move for ages. Rude not to at that price.

Anyone who wants a hard-as-nails ball-ache of game should get Maximo. I don't think I ever even got past the second level.
  • mushroomyakuza #50 3 months ago

    God Hand demo pls
  • darc #55 3 months ago

Cool, I've been curious about God Hand for ages, but never bumped into a copy on a store shelf.

Now I really wish would Sony would release the HD Shadow of the Colossus and ICO as separate downloads, at something like $15 or $20 a pop. $40 is *just* enough to give pause for a couple of games I already own.
  • ReapingAngel #56 3 months ago

Its amazing to see that Fear Effect 2 (PS One) is more expensive than GunGrave Overdose (PS2).
  • Ranger_Ryu #57 3 months ago

    downloading both demos for sure.
  • ExcellentBenji #58 3 months ago

This is quite the update. Any chance Xbox might do the same, I wonder?

Newer PS3s not playing PS2 games does suck, but the Wii U isn't going to play Gamecube discs - what's the betting they come available to download?
  • rotmm #59 3 months ago

@ExcellentBenji "Any chance Xbox might do the same, I wonder?"

Do the same as what? Large update?
  • Toothball #60 3 months ago

    @Gunzberg

A demo for God Hand would have totally the opposite effect, as your first encounter with the game is a baffling ordeal. If you enjoyed Dark Souls because it was brutally difficult, you'll probably get along famously with God Hand.

House of the dead 3 any good? Is it compatible with the Sharp shooter?
  • scuffpuppies #63 3 months ago

5 years too late is better than never at all.

I just hope the "none gaming" Sony executive who proclaimed "who wants to play PS2 games on a PS3?" while attempting to justify not licencing the PS2 emulation software in order to save a few quid, is back working a Burger King.

I actually knew this chap a few years ago while Soy were AGAIN reshuffling even more layers of pointless management levels, and he really was a grade 'A' prick.
But thank the Gaming Gods, and common sense he's no longer with us.

Edit: He's not dead or anything...just gone.

They should do a deal on Mass Effect 2 in the run up to 3 arriving. I can't believe it is still sitting at £47.99 on the store. Can be picked up for a tenner in shops.
  • steagz #65 3 months ago

PS2 GAMES 0N PSN REALLY its a real shame i allready pick up ps2 games for a quid each and i have like over 400 in my collection. BASICALLY WHAT IM TRYING TO SAY IS PS2 GAMES ON PSN MY ARSE.

if you want ps2 games go pick up them up from cash converters/generator for next to nothing.

  • Snufkin #66 3 months ago

@darc - I believe you can download both Ico and SotC seperately from the US PSN, for $20 each. Though obv you need to have a US-based credit card to do so.

@TheBusterMan - I remember playing House of the Dead 3 in the arcades and it was good knockabout fun. I'm pretty sure it's just an on rails shooter so should be compatible with the Sharpshooter but without the movement part, and hopefully with the crappy knock-off gun accessory I bought the other day. :)
  • Drygore #67 3 months ago

    GOD HAND :-]

Also, the Maximo games are ace! I suggest people that don't know about them to look them up. Spiritual successors to Ghost'N Goblins from Capcom themselves.

    FC2 for free.

A really nice update this one ;-]

So does that mean it's free?
  • Dangerous_Dan #76 3 months ago

@BloodyMonkey - Actually they have to heavily modify the games engine to have a decent software emulation for the downloadable PS2 games.
That being said a backwards compatibility would have been very descent.
I'd like to be able to play my old games if I desire and I don't want to pay for them again but that's a problem which afflicts all consoles.

  • ExcellentBenji #83 3 months ago

@rotmm Yeah, a large update of original Xbox titles would be nice. I don't think they've done one in... ages?
  • ExcellentBenji #84 3 months ago

@Mister-Wario No, it's absolutely not bad - I'm quite liking that online distribution is making hard to find games easy to access. I recently bought a load of Final Fantasy games through PSN for about £4 each, but not before searching Ebay to find out the price of the discs... and, oh my, a lot of them were £50+! I'm lucky enough to have a copy of Paper Mario for the Gamecube (though I'll probably flog it and buy the digital version instead), but I'm glad that online distribution can offer those that aren't so lucky the chance to play it at a reasonable price.

Film companies and music companies make money off their back catalogues, so the chance for devs to do the same is great, too.

Oh gawd, i wonder how big the ME3 demo is and if i'll be able to d/l it before it cuts out
  • Kaminari #90 3 months ago

And Sony wanted us to believe the PS3 couldn't emulate the PS2...

I'll keep playing on my PSTwo, thanks.
  • lexxx #91 3 months ago

@Kaminari the PS2 probably uses a fraction of the electricity, too

    @TooOldToGame @spacedelete

I swear to God, I'm sick of you both.

So I'm banning you both. I know for a fact I've sent you both links to the site guidelines before, and you each appear to have not read them, or just read the bits that you think apply to you.

I haven't decided how long these bans will last yet, but let's assume they're 48 hours, as a starting point.

@Snufkin Really?? That's awesome! I suppose I should have looked LOL.
  • sugarbaron #94 3 months ago

At last we start to see the real reason why SONY removed the PS2 emulator from the PS3.
  • sonicyoda #95 3 months ago

Anyone else having Road Trip Adventure crash on them a lot?
  • menage #96 3 months ago

Thats a lot of shitty ps2 games.
  • Lemming81 #97 3 months ago

What is the point in rereleasing flash in the pan Disney/movie/cartoon tie-ins? Surely more effort than it's worth?
  • Mellissa #98 3 months ago

Disney G-force, Tron: Evolution, PSP Pirates Essentials Bundle, PSP Disney Pixar Double Pack, Hannah Montana – Rock Out the Show and Toy Story 3.
    They're PSP not PS3.

Might want to check the blog and read the heading that says PSP POWER SALE before posting them all under "PS3 Special Offers". I wouldn't mind paying 3.99 for Tron on PS3.

You copy pasted the typo lol

    @agparrot

It would be better if Eurogamer could ban by IP address rather than Username when/if they permaban. That way trolls like spacedelete cannot just make up another account (as he has apparently done in the past).

God Hand, yes. Maximo one and two, pleasing. Now give me my Onimushas and, above all else, Final Fantasy X. While you're at it, toss in Okami and Disgaea for good measure :p
