Sony: Only On PSN US only

But "majority of content" coming to Europe.

The recently announced Only On PlayStation Network programme is US only, Sony has told Eurogamer.

However, Sony pledged to bring the "majority" of the content to Europe.

"'The Only On PlayStation Network programme is for the SCEA region only," a Sony spokesperson told Eurogamer.

"However, we will be bringing the majority of the content to the SCEE audience, including Classic PS2 titles.

"We have numerous exciting offers that we will be introducing to PSN users throughout our region in the lead up to Christmas and look forward to sharing these with you."

Only On PSN is a new campaign designed to promote PlayStation Network exclusive games throughout October.

In the US, at least one exclusive PSN title will be released each week throughout the month, starting this Wednesday with Rochard.

In the US, the confirmed line-up is Eufloria and Rochard for this week and Sideway: New York for next.

And, in the US, this week will also see a selection of "rare classic" PlayStation 2 titles made available to download: God Hand, GrimGrimoire, Maximo: Ghosts to Glory, Odin Sphere and Ring of Red.

    Shafted again? We'll have to wait and see what crumbs they throw us peasant Europeans/ Brits.
  • kingcrowbar #2 8 months ago

    Why a new story, why not just update the old one?

    What a surprise. I bet SCEE didn't even know about it.

    Why do this Sony? If you've got a good idea, why would you not go with it in every geo?! Disappointing. Still I guess if you have a US PSN account, you can still take advantage.
  • rockavitch #4 8 months ago

    It wouldn't make sense for them to post "SONY LETDOWN FANS AGAIN" news if it was just crammed into an all ready existing story, this way highlights it more and therefore it is the EG way.
  • GamesProgrammer Verified Games Team Programmer, Eutechnyx Ltd. #5 8 months ago

    Was wondering about that, when we already have Rochard, so to some extent we are also getting the content earlier, but im sure there will be some we will be getting later.

    So we dont get the advertising campaign who cares, long as we get the PS2 games :D
  • Goodfella #6 8 months ago

    Once again Sony pander to the US who prefer the Xbox, thanks.
  • Beano #7 8 months ago

    No surprise really - after all, this is how Sony works. But I'm sure we will still get most (if not all) of the stuff, just a bit later.
  • Widge #8 8 months ago

    Didn't the PS2 range suffer from shoddy PAL ports too?

    Head to the US would be my requirement if so even with content parity.

    Once again Sony pander to the US who prefer the Xbox, thanks.

    @Good - sadly thats the reason why, Sony have Japan, and iirc a somewhat even split over here in the EU atm, however the US they are losing hence push more there to 'win' it.

    It's really the double edged sword of the marketing team as by 'focusing' all the stuff on the US to break into the market, and with information being this open with whats happening over there free for the EU to look at, they risk losing some EU users due to frustration over the uneven PSN market (I dought we'll ever see Chrono Cross and I'm still pissed at Castlevania not coming over here last week). IF Sony actually tried to balance both sides they would strengthen their foothold in the EU yet still break into the US - but thats the tunnel-vision of the marketing team for you =/

    This is kinda the reason why MS are so tight lipped about XBLA releases - freedom of information has it's good points and bad.

    I just wish they would add trophies to ps1 and ps2 titles we can download from the store. Appreciate they cant do it with hard copies but no reaso why they cant add a trophy pkg to a version optimised for ps3, and sure it will increase sales too

    Really, they should just open up access to every store and make the pre-paid PSN cards universal for every store. Probably not possible, but I don't care, I'm a consumer.

  • super_monty #19 8 months ago

    I can't believe how childish some post are, they are not taking anything from us the content looks like it will be released anyway. It costs money to roll these things out. They are generating cash in one area then move to another.
  • Machetazo #20 8 months ago

    Very nice legitimate classics in that lineup. Ring of Red should not be missed, a must-play, and God Hand is fantastic fun! It's great to see a new availability for fan favourite, lesser circulated titles, promoted under a classics marquee, as opposed to what's more common that classics means old. Both of those are eminently playable today, and yeah, it's just great to see this. :)
    Hopefully, they'll do the right thing and ensure that the games, at least are available to all.

    Japan and USA have always been Sony's priority. It's piss easy to set up a US account anyway, my address is Beverly Hills 90210.
  • Architect_z #23 8 months ago

    Does anyone know why the US store is different to the European one? In fact does anyone even know why Sony have regional stores? I'm just curious? I can't think of any good reasons? Is it law related?
  • Toothball #24 8 months ago

    They had to pick God Hand. I could have managed to get by watching the US once again get much better service out of Sony if they hadn't picked this one. Perhaps it will make it over here eventually but I'm still dubious we'll see the "majority" of it. It wouldn't be the first time a statement like this, it never really pans out. For example, I'm still waiting on a good few PS1 games that they confirmed in January then went strangely silent on. These days I find Sony's words a bit hollow, instead waiting for action before allowing myself a little anticipation, or in rare cases excitement.

    And before the "Get a US account" posts, it shouldn't be necessary to create another account in order to get the same service from PSN as US gamers. Being a Sony gamer in Europe constantly feels like being some sort of lower class of gamer that they're not concerned with appeasing.

    Erm, because Europe and the Uk are not considered the same? UK is not part of the Eurozone and we are not on the same continent.
  • CloisterBlack #26 8 months ago

    The continent of Europe?
  • Toothball #31 8 months ago

    I thought the true definition of whether a country was in Europe or not was whether they were allowed to enter the Eurovision Song Contest? Those boundaries seem to be the biggest of all.

  • darkmorgado #35 8 months ago

    UK may be on continental maps but its not part of the continent - its an island. Hence why people in Europe are referred to in the UK as "continental".
  • DrStrangelove #36 8 months ago

    @CloisterBlack

    "Why do you Brits differentiate yourselves from the rest of Europe?.. It's not the first time I've seen this."

    People on the continent are different, aren't they? They don't like cricket and plumpudding, they drive on the wrong side of the road, they don't wait in line, and they talk silly languages. Some of them even trust in a government's ability to do any good.

    They just seem to lack common sense.
  • septimus #37 8 months ago

    Fuckers. Always do this. Ah well at least we will be able to buy $60 worth of games and miss out on the bonus. Usually they don't even bother releasing the download to EU.

    Shaft your biggest market. Well done fuckwits. Really going off you Sony, you keep messing up.
  • MasterNameless #38 8 months ago

    Also, releases are different between the UK and Europe - Microsoft and Sony do seem to treat them as different regions, with many countries not getting the same Marketplace content. I imagine it's mostly down to the different languages, but it is unfortunately so.

    We, in the "continent" do not speak all the same language.
  • CloisterBlack #41 8 months ago

    @darkmorgado
    This is silly. It's like saying that Crete is not part of Greece, because it's an island.

    @DrStrangelove
    Touché :D
  • MasterNameless #42 8 months ago

    We are in Europe, not on the continent - but regardless, we are often treated as a different territory where gaming is concerned. That's why we differentiate.

    Surely, it's as simple as that, no?
  • darkmorgado #43 8 months ago

    @cloisterback

    Erm, its not silly its simply fact. Look up the definition of "continent" and "island".
  • Toothball #44 8 months ago

    There seems to have emerged a debate over the geological and political definitions of a continent. No matter how that one could be resolved, Sony will still ignore the result. They seem to think that Australia is part of Europe after all, so I don't think they're going by the same definitions as the rest of us.
  • Goodfella #45 8 months ago

    Yup.

    "con·ti·nent - Noun: Any of the world's main continuous expanses of land"
  • darkmorgado #46 8 months ago

    @amfamaster

    lol what? uk's part of europe but not the mainland.. or is it another continent LOL

    No, its an island.
    I take it you failed geography in school?
  • Darksjeik #47 8 months ago

    Because it would be sooooo much trouble to include us Europeans... Can't they just shaft the French? J//k
  • MasterNameless #48 8 months ago

    "We, in the "continent" do not speak all the same language."

    Yeah... that's what I said wasn't it? I was just saying that's probably why MS and Sony treat us as a different territory - because it's easier for them to release certain content in the UK, as they're too lazy to localise it for all the different languages in Europe.

    Edit: Oh I see... you thought I was inferring that everyone in Europe spoke a single, different language? Haha... no. "Languages" in my post was plural. :)

  • RobGThai #50 8 months ago

    Poor European, so hard being left out? We Asian is even worse. Lots of games only available in Japanese, and we dont even speak Japanese. When I visit EU store and the content is so rich, not at US level but it's not bad.

    I used to buy PS cash card for each region to buy stuff. Now, I moved on to another stage already. If they dont want to sell it to me, I'm not going to buy it. We are living in an age where I can download anything across the pond with ease and this still happen. I'll leave it to them to sort this shit out, I've had enough.

  • inutaihanyou #54 8 months ago

    That is completely out of bounds Lord Gremlin. Some times people just get different things, its apart of the marketshare. We weren't too happy when Nintendo gave you guys some pretty good exclusives and left us high and dry, but that's how it goes. Just deal, atleast you'll be getting a majority of the content.

    Ring of Red was bloody fantastic. Shame it might be missed here in UK this time around.
  • Beano #57 8 months ago

    So... any info yet about the PS2 classics? Emulated or ports?
  • 2099net #58 8 months ago

    Well I guess "the majority" is par for the course. After all we only get the "majority" of US Store content now, why should this be any different.

    And to think, when the PSP Go was released, Sony thought digital distribution would be the future. Not in Europe, obviously.
  • Toothball #59 8 months ago

    @2099net

    While I've not shortage of gripe when it comes to PSN versus Europe, in fairness there weren't a great deal of PSP full-game releases either side of the water before or after the Go came along. PS1 games were a bigger sticking point for the most part.
  • PaulLFC #60 8 months ago

    "including PS2 games" - that'll do me. Just hope they're reasonably priced.
  • like3cokecans #61 8 months ago

    Oh dear, better sell my copies of Odin Sphere, Maximo and Ring of Red quick then as I can't play them on my PS3 anyway... I feel sorry for the people who had the original Radiant Silvergun and didn't see it coming on 360. Actually, I don't, games shouldn't be used as an investment.
  • Jamiesan #62 8 months ago

    Dear Sony: Release Odin Sphere in Europe, and sharpish, or I'll send the lads 'round.

    Can't understand why they continue to withold release of games in certain territories. Especially games where the translation work has already been done years ago! The sooner this archaic practise ends, the better. And to think - Sony were the first to market an online distribution-only console!
  • 2099net #63 8 months ago

    @Toothball

    Well, if the future is to be digital download, Sony needs to convince its customers it can supply digital content before they release a download only console. Given how shoddy their European PSN Store is I'd say they have a decade to go - even if they turn things around on a dime tomorrow. We've just been neglected and ignored for too long. I don't have any confidence that they can support a digital only delivery method in Europe at all.

    UK is on the Eurasian plate just happens to have a bit of sea between the mainland and it.
  • CaoSlayer #66 8 months ago

    Why they don't allow me to play my ps2 discs?

    I already own Odin Sphere and God Hand, I don't want to pay again from the same game.

  • darkmorgado #68 8 months ago

    @CaoSlayer

    You answered your own question.

    They won't let you play them because they want you to pay for it all over again. That's the real reason the removed backwards compatibility, which cost them tuppence to implement.
  • ajaxpliskin #69 8 months ago

    The first game mention, Eufloria, came out on PC long before PS3. So it's not really, "Only On PSN" is it?

    Maybe they should call it, "Not on Xbox... yet"
  • TAPNGO #70 8 months ago

    remove backwards compatibility from ps3 and people are happy about this?
  • bemani247 #71 8 months ago

    Grim Grimoire, proof Japan can make RTS games and Odin Sphere, proof games truely are art. If Sony dont bring them to Europe PSN, there will be hell!
  • KrazyFace #72 8 months ago

    "Why do you Brits differentiate yourselves from the rest of Europe?.. It's not the first time I've seen this."

    We set ourselves apart from the rest coz - as we all know - it was the UK (and some Dutch) that single-handedly managed to enslave half the word, destroy another half and anyone left over we either christianised with god-talk or duped them out of their land with our fancy coinage, courts-of-law or our almighty FLAG!

    "You got a flag on this, no!? *BAM* Then it's ours now, see, there's our flag"

    We're proud of how our tiny little island has (literally) buggered the world. RULE BRITANIA!!!
