Q-Games cold on PixelJunk sequels

Cuthbert rules out Eden follow-up.

Further sequels to any of Q-Games' acclaimed PixelJunk titles are unlikely, studio founder Dylan Cuthbert has told Eurogamer.

Cuthbert explained that, aside from a social networking Monsters spin-off, Q plans to focus on more original games in the near future.

"We get a lot of calls to do an Eden sequel and people also say they want more Monsters. We're actually doing a social network version of Monsters. Probably Facebook. It's a hell of a lot of fun," he explained.

"Apart from that I'd prefer not to do any more sequels for the time being. We have a couple of original ideas we want to pursue. You can get into this trap if you start doing that, where that's all you end up doing."

He added that the recent released PixelJunk Shooter 2 was an exception.

"When we made Shooter we had all these ideas left over, and we thought it would be such a waste not to do another, so that's why we did Shooter 2. That was necessary. Apart from that, I always prefer to make original things. Every now and then, as fan service, make a sequel. But not one after another."

He wouldn't offer any concrete details of what will follow the impending PixelJunk SideScroller and PixelJunk 4am, but did reveal that a 3D title is part of the plan.

"We haven't decided genres yet, but when we do make a 3D game we'll be doing something that looks completely different. We don't want to go with a standard 3D game - we want to find something else to do in that space."

For more from Cuthbert, and news on whether a Microsoft collaboration or another StarFox title might feature in Q-Games' immediate future, head on over to our recent interview.

    Awwwww - no Eden 2? :o(

Having said that I am really looking forward to 4am, if that's the price to pay for not having a sequel to a game I love then maybe I can cope :oP

Just hope they keep churning out top quality new and different ideas - better that than a sequel factory.

Nope. Nope. Nope. Even though I love PixelJunk Monsters I am still not signing up to Facebook.

All we want is the extra island they have on the PSP in my PS3 Monsters - pulease... not a sequal... just a leveling!

Yep, co-sign on what frunk said. Monsters is easily one of my favourite games on PS3 - I'm sure I'm not alone in being happy to cough up a few quid for an expansion which brought in all the extra PSP content.

Also, games on Facebook? Yes, I will surely jump at the chance to clog up my wall and my friends' news feeds with a million variations on I JUST KILLED A MONSTER IN MONSTERS! DO YOU WANT TO KILL MONSTERS IN MONSTERS? THEN SIGN UP TO MONSTERS, THE NEW MONSTER GAME ABOUT MONSTERS!

How about giving us a few new PS3 music visualisations (via firmware update)?

    No Eden 2, bugger.

But I always trust in their creativity and I'd like to be surprised again. Whatever they do, I'll buy it.

Well, not on Facebook obviously, I hate that. But everything on PSN is sold.

I loved Eden. It was tough as nails so I never did finish it, but I loved the gameplay, music and the visual style. It's a beautiful game.

Would love to see a sequel, yup.
