Atari Flashback 3 console: 60 games, £50

Two pads, looks like Atari 2600.

The Atari 2600 is going back on sale!

At least, that's what the Atari Flashback 3 console has been designed to look like.

It comes with 60 games, two wired Atari-style controllers, TV connectivity (helpful) and a limited edition Atari poster.

Zavvi lists an SD slot that enables "more downloads" and saved games. You can upload your high scores to the Atari website, Twitter and Facebook.

Zavvi charges £34.85, but lists only 50 games and supplies no release date.

Accessory site Blaze, meanwhile, asks £50 for the machine and supplies an 11th September release date.

    God, no.

Great at the time, shit now.
  • kassmageant #2 9 months ago

i was going to make a comment that there is no consumer base for that - retro gaming enthusiasts will prefer original system

but then again, modern tv support is pretty helpfull
  • danathjo #3 9 months ago

Cool idea but i'd rather have all the games on a PS3/360 compilation, personally.
  • SlackMaster #4 9 months ago

£60 is a bit steep. Half that price and then it's much more reasonable.
  • jetsetwillie #5 9 months ago

why anyone would want to play 2600 games is beyond me. even at the time those games were terrible.

  • Dave52 #6 9 months ago

I have a great Atari Emulator on my phone, along with Megadrive and Snes ones, that allows me to scratch my nostalgia itch every now and again. This is pretty cool, but it has unused Christmas present written all over it.

    No Pitfall = No sale.
  • thesonglessbird #8 9 months ago

I'd probably enjoy this for about 30 minutes and then weep at shelling out £50 for it.
  • CivilD #9 9 months ago

No Jungle Hunt or Crystal Castles = no sale!

Edit: Just saw the Zavvi list with Crystal Castles in, might purchase...

No River Raid no sale for me. Though Pitfall is also a major omission.

how can you not have space invaders?
  • loveless #13 9 months ago

    @EugenesLair

That may be what is on Zavvi's site, but it isn't what's listed on the manufacturer's page:

    [link url=http://www.blazeeurope.com/atari/atari-flashback-3/prod_156.html
    ]http://www.blazeeurope.com/atari/atari-f...[/link]

It looks like it only contains the Atari published titles, except some of the ones that were licensed from 3rd parties (like Galaxian and Space Invaders).

What's probably happened is that they hoped to include some of the other titles, but couldn't secure the licenses to do so. Which is a real shame, as without Activision, Parker Brothers or some of the other 3rd party licenses, you are missing out on pretty much all of the best releases on the 2600.
  • flaming.carrot #14 9 months ago

I bought an original 2600 with about 15 games and also the paddles for £25 quid on eBay. It is pretty rubbish really though, only space invaders has any longevity.
  • RandomTerrain #15 9 months ago

I was silly enough to hope for Atari ST games such as Dungeon Master, Captive, Turrican, Midnight Resistance, Rainbow Islands, and so on. Maybe one day?
    /Hopes.
  • mashk #16 9 months ago

Rose tinted glasses. My memories of the 2600 weren't the best back in the early 80s. God knows what I'd think of the games now. It probably belongs in the same landfill as all those ET carts.
  • handsonhips101 #17 9 months ago

    where the fuck is ET?

    I loved that game.

walk - fall down hole - extend neck - eat pill thing - walk - fall down hole - extend neck - get dragged by agent to what looks like a greek ruin. repeat.

on a serious note it is missing bezerk.
  • MinerWilly #18 9 months ago

I want the metal switches not big round plastic ones :(
  • sonicyoda #19 9 months ago

SD card support is a bloody good idea. Very tempting.
  • IronGiant #20 9 months ago

  • FarbrorBaku #21 9 months ago

Atari 2600 games have not aged well, even at the low price i feel no need to get this.
  • telboy007 #22 9 months ago

There is nothing wrong with a bit of Yar's Revenge, classic gameplay. Most of these are available through Games Room though (at rip off prices). Also why no Riddle of the Sphinx? Awesome game.
  • Ranger101 #23 9 months ago

HOLD TIGHT... there was an Adventure 2?

    Why was this not promoted?!
  • drhickman1983 #24 9 months ago

no Pacman?! The 2600 version was amazing.

Atari back in the Hardware game........
  • kangarootoo #26 9 months ago

Pitfall 2 would have been nice. So would Fathom. The difference in depth between some Atari 2600 games, especially later in the life of the console was stark.

At least Adventure is on there (get eaten by dragon, wait for dragon to get picked up by by bat, grab bat from inside dragon, steer bat, FUN!).

Price actually seems a little high to me. £35 is good, but not £50.
  • mcreddie #27 9 months ago

Gimme a wireless HD megadrive and we're rolling.
  • BonzoBanana #28 9 months ago

Seems a bit steep. I would of thought everything the vcs was capable of and all those games could be stored on a 30 cents chip. So £50 seems a bit steep seeing as a preowned wii can be bought for that nowadays.
  • NeoKenzi #29 9 months ago

    Where's Mountain King?
  • 32768Colours #30 9 months ago

I think XBL Games Room has proven that most of these games really don't stand up today. Saying that, I'm a sucker for retro goodies like this, so if I see it in ASDA or somewhere else where they clearly don't know the value of what they're selling (like when I picked up Vanquish in Sainsbury's for a tenner last month), I'll probably snap this up.

Hell, it'll be worth buying just to confound my wife! :D
  • Smoped #31 9 months ago

Is that Xbox Live Arcade Game Room or whatever thing still up? They were asking a couple of quid per old Atari games, as I recall. Compared to that, this is a steal. Then again, as far as I know, not many people bought any of those games.
  • 32768Colours #32 9 months ago

    ^@Smoped

As far as I know, it is. I've spotted it on XBL when in the Games Marketplace, but haven't looked at it since about the first fortnight it came out. Kinda sums it up really!
  • denizen #33 8 months ago

I love Atari and I probably always will. What i do not understand however is why on earth repeat games from prior consoles? I already own the Flashback 1 & 2 & between the first two, 33 games are repeated! This means that you only get 27 new games.

A great idea would have been to have releaed a retro console with the ability to buy & download games online. Then we could choose the games we want, Atari STILL profit and you could build your collection of classics. Best part? You can still play them on a retro looking console with classic controllers.

Come on Atari! There is so much potential here but it is being thrown away!
