Blizzard "serious" about console Diablo 3

"It's going to be awesome."

Blizzard has given its firmest indication to date that Diablo 3 is coming to consoles.

While lead designer Josh Mosqueira stopped short of confirming the port out right during a Gamescom press conference today, he stated that the developer "is very, very serious about bringing the Diablo 3 experience to the console."

He added that, as reported earlier this year, Blizzard is currently in the process of recruiting a team to handle a potential console version of the action RPG sequel.

"Today, we're trying to build the best console team at Blizzard. We're looking for programmers, designers, artists who think their dream job would be to bring Diablo to the console. Trust me, it is a dream job.

"All I can say is it's going to be awesome. Stay tuned."

The PC version of the game is still without a firm release date though an open beta is expected to go live before the end of September.

You know, just thinking about this for a second, it could work really well on the Wii U.

Still, if its any good and I can get a PS3 version, then great. But it has to be good.

How many years away from release is this then?

as xbox owner i'm a little afraid that it will be PS3 only, if it'll happen - xbox live is too hermetic, closed for third parties ingerention - hard to imagine battlenet working on xbox live... sure hope i'm wrong though, plz blizz, take my money! i don't want to buy new pc only for one game : (
  • Dannyboy1100 #7 9 months ago

It'll be just like dungeon siege 3... Except better. I would definately buy that.

lol, they are putting a team together........long time off so its gonna be next gen.:)
  • Vixremento #9 9 months ago

The only thing that would make me buy a console version is if they said I could play it offline (with my mouse and keyboard lol). Actually that's the only thing that's going to make me buy the PC version too...so I'll stop and wait for feedback from those that do play it to see if the "dumbed down" comments (from a D2 vs D3 perspective) are warranted. Seems like blizzard really has gone the way of the devil.

$ "Its going to be awesome" dduuurrr huuurrr deeeeerp huuuurrrrr (drooling saliva from its retarded face) ... Ofc its gonna be awesome, thats why you made it super stupid for the PC (its a hack&slash game really) cause it was planed as a console release later on. Imagine the cash from all markets and not just the PC...muahahahahaaaaa...Blizzard have sold their soul to the Diablo ! $
  • Ryuken #11 9 months ago

Yeah, like the last time they recruited for a console game, hell they even acquired a whole studio then... to no avail. Diablo 3 on consoles would be a good fit I think but let's first see if the PC version can live up to Diablo II's hack 'n slash standards (still the king in its genre).

"Blizzard are very, very serious about making more money."

I wonder who their publisher is? I'm guessing it's no one we know.
  • Subdominator #13 9 months ago

Activision wasn't pleased with the Starcraft sales it seems. Not so long ago Blizzard was outright denying any interest in bringing Diablo 3 to consoles. And if they only started building a team early this year it's gonna be 2013 until the release.
  • kassmageant #14 9 months ago

diablo 1 HD on arcade/PSN would be nice, too - gameplay aged, yeah, but atmosphere, man, that's were that game ruled - III looks a bit too cartoonish : /

Which console? Wii? Every quote in this story makes it sound like a single console, not multiple consoles.

Either way, I'll believe it when I see it.
  • RandomTerrain #16 9 months ago

Sounds great, I've been looking forward to another fantastic RPG hack & slash on console. Bring it on. :o)
If they can better Baldurs Gate on PS2, I will need this.
  • Gambit1977 #17 9 months ago

    Memories of Starcraft Ghost...

Strange the quote says THE console.

Reasons to buy that new PC are dying by meters. On the other hand when he says "the console" maybe he's anticipating by the time it's released Playstation, Xbox and Nintendo will have died and there will only be the Apple iConsole or something.
  • Xardan #20 9 months ago

How would this work on consoles with the whole - pay to sell items on the auction thing? I would have to buy MSP to sell my stuff? Screw that.
  • Lord_Gremlin #21 9 months ago

I suppose it won't require any subscriptions or Internet connection? If so, I may be interested in PS3 version.

I mean, old Diablo was fine on PSone.

  • Lord_Gremlin #22 9 months ago

@Xardan: They could strike a deal with Sony and integrate it as PS store feature.
  • SteveHolt #23 9 months ago

They could also get rid of all this auction house BS for the console versions, since hardcore Diablo players are going to buy it on PC anyway.
  • kassmageant #24 9 months ago

    @Steveholt

i consider myself hardcore diablo player, wasted lot of my life on D2 BN, and i would actually prefer console ver. - this is not complex strategy game or flight simulator for christ sake, it's hack and slash - sacred 2 and torchlight proved that they can be very comfortable on gamepad - and i prefer to MF till dusk on my couch, not on chair next to my desk : )

    Which Console?

Speaking as a console owner, I'd love to play Diablo. Wonder what they'll do about being needing to be connected to the internet all the time.
  • dagas #26 9 months ago

Diablo 1 came out on PS1 so it's not that strange. In fact Blizzard used to put their games on console. Warcraft 2 was also on PS1 and Starcraft was on N64.
  • butler` #27 9 months ago

"Wonder what they'll do about being needing to be connected to the internet all the time. "

Consoles are a closed platform. There's no cheating/DRM implications to consider.
  • immateriaux #28 9 months ago

Given they've decided to reward PC users with "the" really shite DRM system, of course they're going to look to consoles to cover their moneyed asses
  • syra #29 9 months ago

CROSS PLATFORM BATTLE.NET GAMING? ON PS3 AND PC JUST LIKE VALVE PROMISED US WITH STEAM? YES PLEASE?

As to who will publish it, what is that word that comes before Blizzard.... oh right, Activision.
  • Arwin #30 9 months ago

Does that mean the game got a little more expensive than originally intended? :) I don't care, as long as the PS3 version has Move support!
  • kassmageant #31 9 months ago

    @Arwin

man, don't wish too much, look at time that blizz need to make a damn game - if they would like to include move support, you'll probably wait till next decade for bloody game : )
  • Xboxfanuk #32 9 months ago

Microsoft and Activsion/Blizzard both love money, this is a massive win-win for both parties. The Xbox 360 has been the lead platform for Call of Duty with exclusive timed DLC and I could see Microsoft scooping up exclusive DLC for the console version of Diablo III as well.

Blizzard better hurry though before Torchlight II comes to XBLA and blows down the doors.
  • brod #33 9 months ago

    Thanks Activision!
  • FortysixterUK #34 9 months ago

I can wait for a 360 version, as the stupidly harsh rules for the PC version have entirely put me off. I will not be buying Diablo 3 on PC.
    On Xbox, that's another story.....
All xbox games MUST work offline.
The real money AH plan would simply not work or indeed be allowed on the MS network.
This makes a the 360 version infinitley superior to the cash cow rip off PC version.
There's lots of other great games out there.....have you started Xenoblade yet?....'tis wicked.
