Blizzard aiming for 2011 Diablo 3 launch

But not ready to commit.

Blizzard is "working hard" to get Diablo 3 out this year.

But it's not ready to commit to a 2011 release date.

"We are still working hard to ship [Diablo 3] before the end of the year, but we are not ready to commit to a release date at this time," Blizzard boss Mike Morhaime said during an investor call last night.

"The timing on the Diablo 3 release date will come down to a lot of moving parts in putting out a complex release," he continued.

"We talked about the new auction house technology which has not been fully tested. We're not yet in beta, and it's just going to come down to when the game is ready for primetime. So, we'll know more when we hit beta and when we've put some of these new systems into test.

"It's a brand new infrastructure with a lot of moving parts."

The Diablo 3 beta is on track for launch soon, Blizzard said.

On Monday Blizzard revealed that Diablo III allows players to trade in-game items for real money via an officially sanctioned auction house, integrated in the game.

It was also confirmed that the game requires an internet connection to play at all times.

Last night, Morhaime touched on the auction house decision.

"In the previous game, Diablo II, we did not offer such a feature which resulted in many players turning to unscrupulous third-party services to purchases items," he said.

"We felt that because players clearly wanted such a feature, it made sense for us to build it in Diablo III, so they could trade in a more convenient and secured manner than going through an unauthorized third party.

"Players who participate in this optional system will be able to list items on the Auction House for a flat fee, with another charge for completed transactions. When listing an item for sale, players will have the ability to direct the proceeds either to their e-balance, which will remain on Battle.net or to cash out through a third-party service.

"We have not disclosed specific fess, but we plan on keeping them nominal so that more players can participate in it if they so choose, and so that players will opt to use our secured approved method of item trading and not churn to third parties. We will also allow a limited number of free listings each week so players can build up a balance without needing to deposit any funds to get started."

I hope they get it out this year, WoW is still losing subscribers so it looks like they need the money!

And I have no problem with the auction house. It's not like it's compulsory (and you can actually make money!)

As much as i want D3, the only time i'll believe 'news' like this is when the box is on the shelves!

    "they need the money"
    That was soooo fanboytastic.

    2012 december release

Yeah, probably. But the good news here is, if they didn't at least try a 2011 release, it would be December 2013. :)

Need the money? Even with ONLY 11 million subs, WoW brings in more money per month than most games make in their lifetime! Over $200 million a month in revenue!

If you want to stay competitive, besides the price of the game itself, you will most probably pay extra real money via AH shopping. And there are strong chances you will do so :-).
Not compulsory... (laughing) no, it's not. But you are not (I suppose) 7 yo and you should see that your free will is nothing compared to the addiction induced by this type of entertainment. The WoW example is still so fresh, don't we learn anything?...

You like it or you don't, you still HAVE A CHOICE, don't forget that. I personally will stand against this over monetization of everything around me. I'm in for innovation and progres. But I can't help to notice that all we are proposed to are just new ways of dependency, going deeper and deeper, sucking $ from every corner of our lives.

I already pay enough "subscriptions" and effort to exist and function in this society, this is my threshold.

    cheers!

I've never bought gold in an MMO, and I won't use real money to buy items in D3 - the only thing I imagine I might do is sell stuff there, and use that money to buy stuff. I am really quite curious how this will all work out. Maybe the AH will be a major annoyance, maybe it will add another layer of addiction, maybe it will just be entirely irrelevant if you choose not to use it at all - who knows.

Doubting we will see this by christmas.

Fine by me though, way, way too many huge games to get through first.
