OnLive heads to iPad, Android tablets

Dedicated app coming this autumn.

Cloud gaming service OnLive is heading to iPad, iPhone and Android tablets and smartphones this autumn, via a new app for the US and Europe.

The company claims the app will enable "virtually all" OnLive games to be played on a tablet, plus will turn devices into touch/motion-controllers when connected to an HD telly or PC.

Games can be played on mobile devices using either the touchscreen or OnLive's Universal Wireless Controller, and the app will also support multiplayer voice chat.

Apple inadvertently did its bit to help the OnLive PR cause this week, with Steve Jobs' high-profile unveiling of iCloud on Monday.

"The power of the cloud is definitely the theme this week, displacing what had been assumed to be platforms that could never be displaced," said OnLive bigwig Steve Perlman.

"The OnLive Player App for iPad and Android shows how with the power of the cloud, the question is not whether cloud gaming will be able to catch up to consoles, it will be whether consoles will be able to catch up to cloud gaming."

The app is being demoed at E3 this week so we'll hopefully get a proper look at in action shortly.

OnLive is currently only available in the US, with a UK launch scheduled for later this year.
