New Rainbow Six incoming - report

Back-to-basics gameplay promised.

A new entry in Ubisoft's Rainbow Six franchise is on its way that will see the series return to its strategic roots, according to a Kotaku tipster.

Though no name for the project has been settled on yet, the source claimed that the game will see your team attempting to thwart a homegrown terrorist attack on New York City.

It'll be more story-driven than recent entries in the long-running tactical FPS series, but see a renewed focus on stealth and strategy over reckless gunplay.

The new game will apparently sport a new "icon-rich" visual style and include a cover system which sees the action briefly switching from first person to third person.

Ubisoft has declined to comment on the leak.

This isn't first time talk of a new Rainbow Six games has popped up. Last month "Rainbow Six (2011)" appeared on a developer resumé while Ubisoft has been sitting on the www.rainbowsix-bd.com domain name since 2009.

An E3 reveal perhaps? We wouldn't bet against it.

The last time the series graced our screens was the solid Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 back in 2008, which skillfully maneuvered a 7/10 from Eurogamer's Kristan Reed.

Terrorist Hunt mode, please! Can't wait to (hopefully) see more of this at E3.

    Unbelievable!

"...include a cover system which sees the action briefly switching from first person to third person."

It's been a while, hopefully Ubisoft can crank out a great game. Time to redeem yourself for the years of averageness.

Tom Clancy games have a story, does not compute...

    I really liked Vegas 1.

I do hope the mega anal retentive planning stage comes back, only for it to go tits up 5 seconds in.

Nice to see a game finally being set in New York.

Been waiting for this. Great to hear the focus will be on tactics and stealth. Nothing nothing better than clearing a room like a professional and hearing silenced shots pick off multiple enemies after the flashbang.

Aside from the NYC thing, this all sounds remarkably like R6 Vegas. It was the first in the series to feature a story outside of the briefing text, it encouraged strategy over reckless gunplay (at least when compared to series since Raven Shield), its HUD was based almost entirely on icons, and it left first-person whenever you were in cover.

Nice (although come one New York again?).

No silly gimmicks or hand holding and no silly DRM in this "case" Ubi and I'm in. I like Rainbow 6.

    New York New York,
    It's a hell of a town,
    The terrorists are up,

    More of Raven Shield please.
  • coolbritannia #11 12 months ago

New York should be evacuated, it is the most destroyed city in entertainment history.

Vegas was for me the best shooter this gen, can't wait for this.

The Rainbow Six game on the original Xbox was probably my favourite online FPS. One shot kills and proper twitch gameplay, was fun and I wasn't always the one being killed every 5 seconds (maybe every 15 tho). Halo online which everyone raved about I felt was a it too hectic for my liking, and every FPS since then is just way too quick and everything is just a blur, and get killed avery 3 seconds :p

    Here's hoping.

this sounds similar to the promises made for EVERY RAINBOW GAME SINCE RS3:BA, none of which were kept.

No 3rd person cover, tactical planning, realistic accuracy and movement, and decent levels are essential.

More story-driven? The drivel in Vegas and Vegas 2 were bad enough as it is. Bring back Rogue Spear and Raven Shield, dammit, and prove you're capable of fixing a ruined franchise.

Rainbow 6 multiplayer on the original Xbox were some of the best games weve seen, sadly Vegas 1 & 2 were pretty poor in comparison! Would love to see Rainbow go back to how it was with the very simple controls and amazingly simple maps.

    Great news!

    More Rainbow Six: \o/
ANOTHER game set in New York: /o\

Why NY? Out of all the places in the world, why there? RB6: Bristol. Now that'd be a game selling location.

I want lean walk!! Remember when you used the d-pad to lean out from cover in Rainbow Six 3 on the xbox1? When you leant out you didn't know what was round the corner, so much better than this 3rd person gimmickry, if I want arcade I'll play GOW.
  • ShovelyJoe #22 12 months ago

Story mode co-op as well pls. Playing multi-player is great but planning breaches with a mate and arguing tictacs was always good for a laugh too.
  • Tinrib72 #23 12 months ago

Excellent news. More terrorist hunts and I'm defo in!

    Terrorists never invade the Netherlands.

"When you leant out you didn't know what was round the corner,"

Vegas 2 had a multiplayer mode, where the camera zoomed closer when behind cover. Or maybe it was some other game? Anyway, I thought it was a great idea and should be a standard in cover shooters.
