HMV denies Brink LA Noire trade-in offer

Blames confusion on "miscommunication".

HMV has denied it's offering Rockstar crime-em-up LA Noire for a fiver with a Brink trade-in.

MCV this afternoon reported the deal, and published a picture of an advertisement for it.

At the time of writing the offer was advertised on HMV's website.

But HMV told Eurogamer this afternoon that "no such deal is available".

"I believe there may have been a miscommunication on this somewhere along the line which has given rise to this report," a spokesperson said, "but I can confirm that this is not the case, and we have no such deal available."

Brink, which went on sale last Friday, was the UK's best-selling game last week. Rockstar's LA Noire goes on sale this Friday.

Have you seen this offer from HMV? Let us know in the comments section below.

Thank God this story came up. Was worried the Brink news stories were drying up.

    Welcome to brinkgamer.net!

I've no doubt that HMV had planned to go ahead with the offer when it looked like Brink would be a playable console game. Sadly it's not and the majority of people who, like me, were suckered into buying it, will be looking to get rid of it as soon as possible.

They probably want to remove this from their HMV re/play app on the iPhone then, backtracking bastards.

The HMV trade in app has had the "Brink + £5 for LA Noire offer" for the past week... and still has it.
  • Goodfella #6 1 year ago

    More Brink news please.
  • AceGrace #7 1 year ago

"Brink, which went on sale last Friday, is the UK's best-selling game."

    This week!
  • seanyboycorben #8 1 year ago

Bastards, I only got Brink because of this deal and now I'm stuck with the shitty, broken, dull Brink.

HMV are liars, it's up on their RePlay app. Bethesda must have read them the riot act.
  • Katanax #9 1 year ago

Oh, so thats what the story was about - I couldn't read it due to that sodding DIRT3 advert...
  • kinky_mong #10 1 year ago

This is bullshit! It was on the app for the last two days and still is, they are not getting out of taking this turkey off me that easily!

In fact I call bullshit on this article as it's likely Splash Damage are paying EG to convince people that can't get rid of the game.
  • roquey Verified Lead Quality Assurance Tester and Compliance Specialist, Universally Speaking #11 1 year ago

If they are still displaying the offer via the app are they not bound to do so if you show the app to an instore clerk?
  • andywilkie35 #12 1 year ago

Clearly been pulled because of the amount that have already been traded in, as is the case with over hyped games that are released when still broken.
  • LosCapitan #13 1 year ago

"I believe there may have been a miscommunication on this somewhere along the line which has given rise to this report," a spokesperson said, "but I can confirm that this is not the case, and we have no such deal available."

"OFFER STARTS MAY 20th THROUGH 26th MAY."

So yes HMV: TECHNICALLY you "have no such deal available." The question is, WILL it be available from Friday as advertised?
  • jonbwfc #14 1 year ago

"Bastards, I only got Brink because of this deal and now I'm stuck with the shitty, broken, dull Brink. "
You bought Brink so you could trade it in for LA Noire? WTF?

  • wizlon #15 1 year ago

To be fair on HMV I can see why it might look bad for both them and Splash Damage with shelf's upon shelf's of traded in copies of Brink.
  • DavoTheDiv #16 1 year ago

Please fuck off with the Brink news. It's a shit game, and it's making you (eurogamer) look like a set of twats.
  • LittleMousy #17 1 year ago

I'm going to buy Brink from HMV then hand it straight back to them with a £5 note and get LA Noise. BARGAIN. And I even get 1p back, which I'll put towards another copy of Brink.
  • superfurry #18 1 year ago

@jonbwfc Makes perfect sense. If you're planning on buying LA Noire, then you're basically getting to rent Brink for a week at a £5 cost.
  • X201 #19 1 year ago

    @Katanax
Would that be the shoddily coded Dirt 3 advert, that has a close button that reactivates the advert when you move away from it? :-O
  • Cronan #20 1 year ago

No only are HMV liars, they're fucking idiots.
  • Disco_Stu360 #21 1 year ago

Rockstar will have complained, that's why its been pulled! They hate things like this that devalue their games
  • dpb135 #22 1 year ago

apparently Game are doing this deal
  • menage #23 1 year ago

    Brink of insanity
  • onezeonx #24 1 year ago

HMV have often promised a £35 trade offer on new games within 2 weeks of purchase.....so not really worth a story?

If you decide to use.it.on LA Noire or not is up to the seller imo
  • MrChuckles #25 1 year ago

I wonder how much a copy of Brink will be to trade in by next week, the 2nd hand market is going to be flooded.

Might be worth picking up a copy in a few months when the bugs are fixed and even the new copies will be £10.
  • seanyboycorben #26 1 year ago

    @jonbwfc

Sure, I thought why not? It's like a £5 rental with LA Noire coming the next week.

I knew Brink was going to be shit, I just didn't realise how shit.
  • Disco_Stu360 #27 1 year ago

Surely it's Bethesda that will have kicked off?

Maybe as well, but Rockstar have complained about things like this in the past
  • hiddenranbir #28 1 year ago

How much money are you getting for all this brinking, EG?
  • Machetazo #29 1 year ago

@24: 10 points to you, it seems! "In a further layer of complication, a senior retail source has told MCV that Take-Two has told retail that it will withdraw marketing support for any activity that advertises LA Noire alongside a pre-owned discount.

As publishers fund major in-store marketing pushes this is at least strategically feasible, though off the record sources have strongly denied any such activity."

Is there precedent for that reaction? What's the likelihood of a bluff? MCV phoned a store, who told them the deal was still available.

Yeah its weird Rockstar seem to be the only publisher/developer that care about this!! Every other publisher doesn't seem to mind this practice as I guess they just see it as good for their new release title and don't care about trade ins on competitor titles. Obviously not sure what they feel when the shoe is on the other foot...
  • wow_yeh #31 1 year ago

for one i think hmv is a well run well lead buisness who have never EVER done anything stupid bahahaha
  • metalangel #32 1 year ago

Are we on the Brink of total brink saturation? We could build a floating city out of unwanted traded-in copies of Brink and sail the cyan-coloured sea of Brink news. Brink.
  • DwarfyP #33 1 year ago

Why are HMV backing down? So what if they are offering that deal. Sounds a good one if it was true.
  • agparrot #34 1 year ago

This news is a terrible shame if true. Do you think they'll still give me a tenner for Brink?

    Brinking, it's the new tweeting!
  • metalangel #37 1 year ago

I love Brink. I'm trading in all my other games and am about to sell my house so I can buy as many copies of Brink as possible. I'm also changing my name to Brink and getting it tattooed on the inside of my eyelids so even blinking shall become BRINKING and not a second will go by again where I am unable to read about Brink.
  • CosmicFuzz #38 1 year ago

My local HMV store has this offer plastered all over their gaming section!
  • andytheadequate #39 1 year ago

@Agparrot- It seems like we have waited too long to trade it in...
  • Tryhard #40 1 year ago

    haha,Eurogamer won't load now.Just installed a Brink Firewall.
  • neems #41 1 year ago

Well they had a sign up in store on Saturday, although the deal hadn't gone live. And clearly will never do so now.
  • RandomRash #42 1 year ago

    Brink and you'll miss it
  • Ziggy_badMonkey #43 1 year ago

Love all this Brink hating from COD fanboys afraid of something different.
Play Brink on PC (wait for a bit on 360) and you'll have one of the best FPS experiences ever.
All the hating is doing is keeping the press interested and selling more copies for Bethesda !
  • Mister-Wario #44 1 year ago

Do you know, I think I DID see one of these ads in town.
  • makeamazing #45 1 year ago

I am not sure why Rockstar would kick off about this, because as long as you get the money from the sale, it doesnt really matter how they get it... but I would be peeved if i was Splashdamage (regardless of how much people think its a crap game... i didnt like it, but i aint going to crow on about it)...

I agree trade in's help fund other games, but after only one week the stores are pushing to get tradeins for this game, which will then hit any new sales of the game, too right Splash Damage or Bethesda should be peeved.
  • dragulagb #46 1 year ago

lol, i beta tested brink on ps3, knew it was rubbish then but not allowed to say anything until the full game is released
  • geoneo123 #47 1 year ago

On the HMV app the game is showing up as there now offering a £30 trade in and £22 cash!

But the offer for LA Noire for a fiver when you trade in Brink is still available.

I bet almost every copy of the game sold over the weekend will be traded back in
