PSN could be down for next 48 hours

Sony engineers still working on a fix.

PlayStation Network could remain out of action for the next two days, Sony corporate communication boss Patrick Seybold has announced.

"While we are investigating the cause of the Network outage, we wanted to alert you that it may be a full day or two before we're able to get the service completely back up and running," reads a new update on the PlayStation Blog.

"Thank you very much for your patience while we work to resolve this matter. Please stay tuned to this space for more details, and we'll update you again as soon as we can."

PSN went down earlier today with many pointing the finger of blame at the Anonymous hacker group.

    Are you that eager to pay for a p2p service? Especially when this happened once or twice in 3 years on PSN?

    investigating the possibility of targeted behaviour by an outside party is hardly the same as pointing the finger at Anonymous, now is it?
  • Yodith #6 1 year ago

    Rather annoying for those of us attempting to us the much touted Steam Cloud Sync and cross-platform play with Portal 2 since you need to be logged in to PSN.

    It might be the steam psn integration thats causing the problem seeing portal 2 is out.
    would rather that than some pricks ddos'ing psn.

    They're pointing the finger at Valve.

    The Steam/PSN integration was working fine this time yesterday. I was chatting to a PSN friend from Steam. All was good. So is it Portal 2, or Anonymous? Hmm. Which one made threats this week...?

    i hate it when this happens and you get the error code instead of just saying the site is down then many of us would not think our ps3s are broke are something

  • coolbritannia #17 1 year ago

    This article is incorrect as Sony definitely said this morning it was just maintenance and Sony are well known for being honest with their press releases.
  • MeBrains #18 1 year ago

    i was expecting more attention from live lovers here, but all is still okay apparently.

    in case some come in after me: be careful what you say about this outage, since MS is not really a prime example when it comes to offering great services. remember their security issues on desktops some years ago? how much impact did these have?

    guess it happens to the best eh?

    @coolbritannia - Sony *always* says it's just maintenance. Corporate disinformation is the norm with them. They never, ever do maintenance without forewarning. And both of these major outages have followed days after threats from sex-deprived children.

  • BlinkeredAxis #37 1 year ago

    It's incredibly nice of eveyone to be so patient and play single player games for TWO days. For god's sake, COMPLAIN!

    This in an outrageous cock-up, and people DO pay for PS+

    Even if you like the free service model, the cost of maintaining the network is factored into your game/DLC price. Sony can't do this without passing on the cost to the consumer. Personally, I'd like some sort of free voucher or something.
  • sfp_noodle #38 1 year ago

    @Sony4EVER

    Actually, PS2 had quite a few online enabled games but the service was never centralised like Live was with both Xbox consoles. Although I do agree with playing offline MP or single player games though. Exclusive wise, the PS3 is very well catered for in the single player department with some cracking games like Metal Gear Solid 4, Heavy Rain, Uncharted 1+2, God of War 3, Infamous and some excellent 3rd party software such as Red Dead Redemption, Bioshock and Assassin's Creed.

    Catch up on your single player games people. I finally managed to put Killzone 3 down to finish Red Dead Redemption on my 360. Cracking game, I suggest anyone who has not played it to go out and buy it ASAP.

  • sfp_noodle #39 1 year ago

    @BlinkeredAxis

    I'm sorry, but are you trying to say that MS charge it's customers a seperate fee to play online AND factor the cost of network usage when charging for games and DLC? Why aren't games on the 360 launched at a cheaper price then? As far as I can remember, games have cost £40 since the PS1 days where there was no online access whatsoever. What factors went into that price then? Speak sense please. Also, judging by your 360 profile, I doubt you even own a PS3 since all multiplatform games appear to be on that console.

    PS+ customers just have to wait an extra day or two to access their content, it's not like Sony are locking it out and customers missed their download window. You'd have to be an extremely impatient 12 year old and a bit of a cock to demand a refund of around 40p for not having access to something that appears to be out of Sony's control.

    Also, MS also has frequent downtimes for network mainteance, I don't see anybody complaining about wanting a refund over the time they haven't been able to access Xbox Live, so why should people complain about what is actually a very good free online service? Seriously some people bitch about PSN like it needs friends codes to play or something. Have you tried the Wii online? It's atrocious. A bare bones experience with no voice chat or any user friendly features.

    I use both Live and PSN extensively, and whilst Live is a better service, the online functionality is exactly the same. I'm not interested in the rubbish Facebook and whatever crap facilities that are offered to me, I only care about online, like pretty much everybody. When you factor that in, whilst Live is still better than PSN, it's no where near £40 a year better. Even the most hardcore 360 fanboy knows that but will never publically admit it.

    If this is anonymous I'm joining the FBI to hunt these ppl down
  • NeverWinter78 #41 1 year ago

    If this is Anonymous all it does is show their not really out to help the people like they said and most likely lose alot of support they might of had. Especially as they said they wasn't going after PSN as it wasn't the customers fault. I have both 360 and ps3 but never play my ps3 online so it's not bothering me at all
  • WizenWolfBain #42 1 year ago

    This is just one of the many reasons why i pay for Xbox Live.

    @sfp_noodle

    I have been a member of Xbox Live since 2003. I have noticed perhaps 3 times in the past 8 years of flawless service that Xbox Live has gone down for scheduled maintenance for more than 4 hours (and two of those times were definitely 24 hours during the upgrade from original Xbox Live 2.0 to facilitate Xbox 360 users). And they always give you at least a few weeks notice. You're talking utter crap.

    I can only think of one time when Xbox Live has had unscheduled issues, and that was the Christmas of 08... And the only noticable problems were the occasional matchmaking failures, or slower friends lists.

    As for the Playstation.. Where do i start? I wouldn't actually know, because i spend more time downloading and installing system updates than actually using the service.

    EDIT:
    While I'm here, posting where all you PS3 buffs will read. Have any of you ever experienced an issue with the console in which the rear fans go to 100% speed and remain incredibly loud until the console is switched off? This happens to me if i have the console on for more than around 30 minutes at a time, and i have no idea why. It always requires a reboot to put the fans back to normal (silent) operating speeds. The model is a fairly old 40GB "fat" edition, and it has done this for around 2 years.

  • CB.Gamestation #48 1 year ago

    @WizenWolfBain

    I very often have to put PS3's in this mode to eject a disk out of a broken console at work. It's some sort of override mode that will make the console work but with fans 100% speed. It's activated by pressing power and eject buttons/touch controls at the same time until mode enters.

    When I play Portal, will I still get the Steam achievements that I got in the meantime when things get back online later on?
  • Kanselier #50 1 year ago

    Blimey ,does every report about this outage result in either a war between Xbox (Live) and PlayStation (Network) or between 'hackers' and consumers?

    There is an outage, that is all. Certainly not the best time now with a bank holiday and the release of Portal 2 (PS3 version gets you a free copy of the PC/Mac version but for that you need the PSN to be active) but hey... too bad. I agree with the posters saying PSN has more 'issues' than Xbox Live but that does not make one service worse/better than the other in my opinion.

    Nobody knows the has caused it. 'Hackers', a server error in Japan, someone tripping over a wire, perhaps another 'daylights saving time' debacle.

    I am just as unhappy with this as as most of you are. But I am sure you will find something else to do. It is lovely weather outside.

  • mrvinny000 #52 1 year ago

    It is free & all the non extra £40's i haven't spent on XBL in 4 yrs has gone towards R&C , Resistance & Uncharted games . I don't understand what that has to do with anything much like half the posts on this subject but it seems Psn has either been attacked , mucked up by a future firmware or a few insiders just don't want us to play games on a Royals wedding lol.
    Yes this is annoying and especially for me as monday saw me replace my 6th 60g Ps3 for 90seconds before it Ylods & only managed to get my 7th yesterday which has meant no access to my Ps+ or dlc & the ability to fully update certain games & sync my trophies . This is just another notch in the life of a Ps3 owner . The hardware that is poorly built , firmware that seems to create issues (Leap yr for no reason ) , a browser & DivX functionality that is set in the stoneage & a free Online service that has gradually got worse as it has grown & with all the anti-jailbreak updates has now left itself in a such a mess even Sony are confused . All in all i own both console & 8 360's in 2yrs early doors made me get a Ps3 which is in hardware terms no better but functionality & ease of use has kept me on board but many don't remember 360's early issues & are quick to snipe at Ps3 & its issues . Ps2 was awkward to play online & Ps3 is Sony's 1st full Online console Vs Microsofts vast experience . Ps4 will be the 1 to beat i just hope the teething troubles get sorted & the console remains free Online as 360's fees having to pay for access to functionality that is on games that you have already bought is daft . Which is reason why less than a 3rd of owners use XBL & why Ps3 has more issues dealing with the usage & why the global market sees Ps3 winning the HD console war . My experience of both consoles is sketchy at best & are both poor at different things but Psn is a great service but the focuw on hackers has made Sony ignorant towards improving the service to deal with the demand & to providing the functionality of a decent flash player for the browser but at least they aren't blocking functionality to free access websites & such to force folk to buy what is a similarly poor service that still lags & has in the past history had its fair share of troubles .

    @wizen
    When you hold down the power/eject button certain sequence it activates it. Also make sure you hoover the dust out of the fans too. The warrenty for those models is probably gone now if you are brave enough to open it up to see if theres a clump of dust causing overheating.
    If you hold power down for AGES when booting(or powering off cant recall) it resets some functions like display and fan etc. Youll know when it works when it does a little double beep.
    Or call sce help line for trouble shooting ;p

    this is my first outages on the ps3 service and i've owned my 4 ps3's sence launch, as for it beening a cyber attack i doubt it not becuase i dont think it could happen but dure to the fact that not all sony sites are down, i beleave that to problem lays within the current nuclear issue at the fuckisham plant a power spike could have contrbuted to this current psn issue.

    beleave me when i say this anon is'nt dumb enough to put out the psn network twice maybe. well at least i my view it would be very stupid to upset the customers. why you might ask ok first off who are the psn customers? are they willing to step into the lime light and be exposed by a rouge hacker. you cant hide from a skilled person.

    i beleave anon made a hugh error in making a threating youtube vid, they may have gotten a far to support them but what they did'nt relize by post tht vid they opened them selfs up to beening balamed for any more interuptions to the psn service this might not seem much but they will no doubt lose alot of support for future ventures and pass ones.

    i will say tho that there 100% right abou governments beening corrupt. who is'nt currpt in a way.

    I think you will find that most of the heavily-vocal complainants about this PSN outage are 360-only fanboys, urging people to "abandon their always-defunct PS3 and always-down PSN and buy the supremely-reliable always-functional 360 and the always-up Live".

    I hardly ever play games online, hence haven't really noticed the PSN is down (apart from all the people moaning obviously. Really, you can't go 2 days without playing online? Sounds like an addiction to me...). I therefore wouldn't describe it as "crippled". There are maybe 3 or 4 games that rely on the PSN - you can play the rest as much as you want.

  • IMD1_Pk #88 1 year ago

    I don't like having features being practically taken away from me when I buy my PS3. If the community will support them for disabling linux and taking away PS2 functionality from the second PS3 I had to buy because I couldn't go online then they won't get support from people who are in my situation.

    I don't care enough to hack their servers but others won't be in the same boat. The best thing would be just to re-enable linux support and live with the consequences if they don't want DOS attacks for the rest of PSN's life

When PSN has too much activity, Sony can use Amazon's servers for payment. Thousands of other websites using this service were offline due to this malfunction according to De Standaard Online. It's still blinking offline. This is very poor. A mate in the know reckons it's all fixed, they're just keeping it offline so they can trace the intrusion. All well and good fining the culprits, but us poor souls who pay for PS Plus and Qriocity (only the former for me) will expect some compensation. MS gave me a free and when Live was down for two days in 2007, be interested to see what Sony offer.
  • Craven #101 1 year ago

    @RodHull i suspect you'll get sweet fa out of all this. Perhaps an apology to every PSN user, but that's all.

    It is getting a bit of a joke now though.

    Sony PSN security is shit as expected.Easter holidays and whole service is down...what a disaster
    But but Xbox Live had problems few years ago "please understand",SDF at its best,lolz

    Stupidity of some people is amazing,Xbox Live has nothing to do with PSN.Why would any normal PS3 owner care about Xbox Live downtime or any other network downtime?

  • jonsaan #106 1 year ago

    Considering that some people pay for PSN, the updates at to what is going on have been utterly dreadful. An hourly update would be expected in my industry for a total service outage. At least! How hard would it be to stick regular updates on the Blog?

    "Considering that some people pay for PSN"

    Nope, PSN is totally free.

    I like the way people are saying "it's beyond a joke now" etc, when nobody knows what is actually happening. True, it's frustrating having to wait to play on-line, but it SEEMS like a major security breach and they won't want to make the network live until it's sorted.
  • vagabond #108 1 year ago

    @jonsaan

    Well said, completely agree.

    Heads should be rolling for this and the should be working on this 24/7 to get this fixed. We were told a couple of days, so what gives Sony?
  • chessboxer #109 1 year ago

    @jonsaan

    Do we really need to see 45+ posts on the blog saying something like "still investigating, nothing new to report"? How many companies publically talk about their systems in the event of a security breach before they have done a threat assessment and resolved the problem (and taken steps to prevent it from happening again)?

    Many wouldn't even publically admit to a breach and we only find out because someone internally opened their mouth, resulting in us (the public) being told days or weeks after the fact.

    I bet if they were updating the blog hourly, people would call it a waste of time as resources were being diverted away from resolving the issue or from publishing someone useful.
  • Jevtro #110 1 year ago

    For all those people whining that it's been off line for more than 2 days, here's a tip. It's an online games service. Do you really have nothing else to do than to whine when you can't play online games for one console for a couple of days? Do you have any other hobbies?
  • vagabond #111 1 year ago

    I'd be pissed off with Sony by now. It's not good enough and doubly galling over a Bank Holiday weekend when most people are off work for the holidays and presmuably want to play online. I wouldn't be suprised if 80% of Sony engineers are on their Easter holidays and won't be working. It'll be a miracle if it is back up and working before Tuesday at the earliest. If you're paying for PS plus I would hope Sony will give you some form of credit.

    Hilarious! So you are conflating writing on a news article with moaning about a games service going down? I'm not bothered about it myself but many people are; I'm pointing out how silly that is. People can live with not playing PS3 online games for 3 days surely? According to some people, they can't! And your tip is to stop trying to work yourself up to be the "bigger man". My comment was fair, I get that people are annoyed it is down, but to complain when its been down a day or two longer than scheduled? Pretty sad.

    these xbox fan that keep being loud with their fan opinion maybe because they play too much xbox, thus hearing too much LOUD xbox fan. (weird pun intended)

    btw i just wish sony will reveal the truth, what is going on with PSN. (honest, im curious with what really happend)
    Valve with STEAM usually not ashamed to admit when they messed things up and say sorry.

    even Gabe say sorryto sony openly about his previous sentiment to PS3 "glad sony didn't punch me in the face". (i cant really remember the exact sentence)

    and also even without PSN, ps3 still have SP game. Portal 2 have SP Mission. or just use XBSLink to play MP without the need to use PSN at all :D (work for PS3 and xbox)

    I m multi platform owner and honestly equally annoyed that PSN is down too long, as i do have PS3 owners only mates and occassionally plays online.

    Admittingly majority is on the XBL cos of longer friends list, but still as a PSN+ subscriber and that a goody chunk of my subscription time being inactive.

    I dont blame Sony (or MS as comments seem to directs their rages at?!) but its really wrong time to take down for maintence if there was an option to quickly restore networking during holidays. Then take down during working week?

    Either way, we deserves a full explanations and whoever redponsible, OWNS up you cads! Silence is just cowardice.

    Looks like this could take a while ... really sucks for gamers.
  • parablax #125 1 year ago

    Out of the blue, I received a penis enlargement email this morning (the same address I used for PSN).
    I am hoping this is just a coincidence - but if not this could be really serious - off to check my online banking now.

    Anyone else had spam emails start again in the past couple of days?
  • Zozzilla #126 1 year ago

    I had an e-mail about erectile dysfunction, but it was to an account not associated with my PSN account.

    Anyway, apparently the hackers attacked the servers so deeply it took out some of the Admin Dev's accounts and damaged the servers so badly, that's why they're moving all the service to new ones and rebuilding it from the ground up. I don't know about you guys bitching about it happening this weekend (which Sony couldn't exactly HELP, could they? they didn't attack their own service.......geez) but they HAVE TO DO IT NOW.

    Paying or not paying for the service would make no difference whatsoever - if people want to screw Sony (and all of its customers), they will regardless of how much money we throw at PSN. Also looking at the EU and US Playstation blogs...the EU commenters are a hell of a lot more patient than the US ones. Seems most Americans literally can't live without online games.

    I think everyone would be less angry if Sony was actually telling their customers what was going on. The fact that it's taken them this long to tell there customers what's happening is a bit of a joke. Ok long outages of PSN is expected since the service is mainly free but how hard is it to post something online telling customers why the service is down? It will be intresting to see how long it takes Sony to fix the problem.
  • Gromit #128 1 year ago

    @Zozilla

    I noticed the difference in the tone of comments between the EU and US Playstation Blog. A lot of them, pretty much immediately started asking for "compensation". Brats.

    No, PSN is free! Nobody pays to use the network. PS+ is an optional add-on service which doesn't affect the existing network service you receive for free.

    Some people complain and moan like its the biggest disaster to hit the planet in a lifetime.

    I have took advantage of the good weather and ventured outdoors. In the evenings I have focused on my single player games.
    I think some peoples lives really do revolve around their console which is very sad.
  • BlinkeredAxis #133 1 year ago

    I've enjoyed the weather this weekend AND played multiplayer on XBL. As I've droned on about 50 times before, the resources required to secure an online gaming network need to come from a payed-for service.

    This way, there is dedicated cash available that can be spent on security, and of course, extra features for the user. I'm afraid that this cheap way of providing a service was never a good model for stability.

  • MDL199 #136 1 year ago

    Coolbritannia, you are a complete and utter tosspot and i'm sure even your mum would agree!

    It is annoying that PSN is down but this is the first time it's happened in all the time i've owned a PS3 and as has been mentioned before Live has had the odd hiccup in the past too.

    PSN is a fantastic service and bar a few minor chat features is virtually the same as Live when it comes to the online gaming experience.

    Away from gaming PSN is most definitely better than Live with tv catch up, LoveFilm, VidZone and optimised websites like YouTube and BlinkBox to take advantage of the built in web browser.

    My mate who's a 360 die hard bought a PS3 last month and admited he was surprised at how good PSN was after all the bullshit talk he'd heard from the Xbots constantly spreading lies and misinformation about the service.

    Sony deserve high praise for making online gaming free and providing a fine service to boot.
  • Mydoom #137 1 year ago

    Still the arguments for subscribed or free services is not done and dusted as some like to think, ie if Sony was running paid for service, the PSN could have been up and running on same day, if these money pay for the extra resources?

    Debate away
  • dadrester #141 1 year ago

    What a lot of folk seem to be forgetting is that while PSN is a "free" service to the end consumer it is actually paid for. While microsoft charge consumers for the range of services they offer on live (which to be fair aren't that far ahead of what Sony offer. I have and use both), they do charge publishers to host content like demos and trailers. If you compare the range of game demos on XBL and PSN, PSN has far less. Both services pretty much get the same demos, however they tend to disappear off PSN after a while, whereas they are (as far as I'm aware) never removed from the XBL servers.

    On a personal level, as a regular user of both services I really don't see much difference, except that my wallet is a little lighter with Microsoft's. PS plus seems to add a little more tangible value to the proceedings with the sheer volume of content they offer to subscribers, but I'd rather spend the money on a game of my choosing rather than a couple I don't really care about, and I don't have a choice with MS if I want to play half of the content of the games I've bought.

    all three offer good stuff but you have to pay for live, something that made no sense when i bothered to think about it.

  • coolbritannia #148 1 year ago

    As I said on the forum, a few years back PSN was compromised and users passwords were handed out to "unknown parties", PSN kept running, so for Sony to pull the plug on PSN over Easter weekend it must be a devastating compromise of their system.

    Free or not, PSN holds credit card info, and Sony have a responsibility to protect your data. The same goes for Live, but to my knowledge, Live has only ever been knocked offline due to increased demand.

    @handsonhips, again dude? You have a real hard on for my posts, I'm flattered.

    Come back to brag about Live after PSN has been down for a whole two weeks.

    Simple facts: contrary to common belief, Live is not remarkably more stable than PSN. The truth is, both tend to have problems every now and then. Does Live have appealing extra features? Absolutely. But is it much more stable? Not really.

    @charliechan

    Convenient of you to ignore the fact that when there is scheduled maintenance of the PSN, the online features that are not available are account management and the store (maintenance is normal completed within 6hrs). As long as you have signed in on the day that the maintenance is taking place, the PS3 will still go online and alow MP gaming.

    When XBL has scheduled maintenance, MP gaming is not available as they take the network offline for anywhere up to 24hrs.

    Next you will try to convince everyone that the security around XBL is somehow greater than the security used by Visa, MasterCard and PayPal, seeing as they were hacked by Annonymous in November/December last year and your premium for XBL Gold make it impervious to such an attack...

    [Geordie accent] Well its day 5 in the PSN house and no ones home.... Epic fail Sony, Epic fail.

    You know why its down, dont you? The latest custom firmware lets user logon to PSN as DEVELOPERS!! This lets them download ALL content for free.

    Sony shat a brick and pulled the whole service down, now they are trying to rebuild it backup but securely this time. Seriously, its was that simple to get DEV access. Sony need to be taking their network teams out and shooting them. PSN+ users better be getting something tasty for this fuckup.
  • EMULOUS #161 1 year ago

    Forever hearing stories about peoples Live accounts being fraudulently used to buy points... jeez... if I paid for that kind of service I'd be seriously p!ssed... oh, what's that Charlie? You PAY for that service? You only get to play HALF of the game you pay the best part of £40 for, and then you have to pay some more to play the other half? Wow... sucks to be you.

    Just off to play some offline games for a bit, got a friend coming over, maybe we'll do Co-op on something. I don't need to go online to play my games... but I'm glad if I wanted to, Sony respect that I've paid for it once already.
  • mattigan #163 1 year ago

    Now I don't own a PS3 so this is not affecting me (XBL FTW - until it breaks as well) but this looks suspiciously like Sony have invoked DR and are in the process of restoring the environment to a 'pre hacked' state. And are funding that the restore process is taking a lot longer than anticipated, maybe their primary backup solution has failed or something, its the only thing I can think of that would knock out a system which would be designed with high availability as one of the chief requirements, along with security of course ;-)
