Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D gets new mode

Boss Challenge, guide vids for 3DS re-make.

Gamers will have a fancy new feature awaiting them in Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D - an all-fighting Boss Challenge mode.

The option allows players to face off against any boss they've met in the game's main quest either individually or all at once in a challenging continuous battle.

The mode is unlocked after reaching "a certain point" within the game, and is an "extra treat" for players seeking more value from a title many will have played through before. It has only been out 13 years, after all.

There are eight main bosses in the game, followed by a final showdown with (who'd have thought it?) series villain Ganondorf. He appears in both human and beast flavours.

What rewards will come for beating them all in sequence? A new tunic? A Tingle side quest? Nintendo isn't saying. But it really should be something good.

Also new is the addition of "bite-sized" guide videos which pop up in-game to aid players unfamiliar with Zelda's mechanics. It's a similar system to the Super Guide pointers provided in recent Mario titles.

Developed by Secret of Mana director Koichi Ishii's new studio Grezzo Games, Ocarina of Time 3DS also features the Master Quest "hard mode" option.

Hyrule's gates open to Europe once more on 17th June.

    DoDoDoDoDoDoDo

That's the sound it makes when you do something good.
  • Octoroc #3 10 months ago

Is this the extra content that was hinted at a few weeks ago?

    I hope not.
  • nuanimal #4 10 months ago

Nice, but I'd prefer an all new Zelda... doesn't have to even be in 3D Ninty - I'd still buy it.
  • captain_Carl #5 10 months ago

Shit, beating them all one at a time was bad enough - can't imagine doing them all in sequence
  • Razz #6 10 months ago

Guide vids? Will the hand holding of the youth never end? When I was a lad I spent an entire summer playing OoT with only trial and error and occasional tips from friends to guide me. No flipping GameFAQs or Gudie vids were needed. *sigh*

This and RE: Mercs 3D are out of the same day - have told the missus not to bother disturbing me.
  • Mr.Spo #8 10 months ago

I really like that--OOT had some of the best boss battles in the series, and I'm looking forward to taking them all on in one continuous battle. Bring it on, bitches!
  • GamesConnoisseur #9 10 months ago

This and Master Quest too, June cant come quick enuf!

Not a fan of boss battles really. I've always wondered who plays boss challenge modes. You must have to be a very specific kind of person I think.

    glol :D

Don't know why that comment made me laugh so much.
  • JoeGBallad #13 10 months ago

Brilliant. This was one of my favourite features of Majora's Mask, so I'm glad to see Nintendo put it in another Zelda game, finally.

One of the reasons I've played through OOT so many times in my life is so I could replay the bosses. They're that good!
  • SG #14 10 months ago

    No.

How about all of the extra content that was promised to come out on the 64DD? If it doesn't have any new areas or dungeons, I really am not excited about this. Mario 64DS had loads of extra stars, Yoshi's Island had a whole extra 6 levels.

I still have the original in mint condition and there's no point shelling out more for the same game with a few added bonuses.
  • utterdrivel #15 10 months ago

I never played OoT in the first place, so I just want them to hurry up and release it.
  • DaDon123456 #16 10 months ago

    @ utterdrivel

Be prepared to have no life when you get your mitts on the game.

"I still have the original in mint condition and there's no point shelling out more for the same game with a few added bonuses. "

The original is not portable, not in 3D and has a slow framerate.
Playin' OOT on a plane should be worth it.
  • Rack #18 10 months ago

When I'm on a plane I'm happy enough playing Espgaluda 2, Super Scribblenauts or Clash of Heroes. If all they add is a boss rush mode and slightly rejigged graphics then this is a real missed opportunity. I don't need much of an excuse to play OoT again but they have to give me something.
  • FenderMaster #19 10 months ago

never really cared for boss rush modes tbh, was hoping for new locations, new dungeons, new items and such rather than the chance to do what you've already done in the game again, but in sequence!
  • roz123 #20 10 months ago

It has the master quest as well
  • geeza2020 #21 10 months ago

that most of us played on the gamecube :/
  • charming_fox #22 10 months ago

I agree with anyone who says that Ocarina of Time was one of the greatest games ever made but I've played through it many times and have no desire to play it again, I'm hoping this 3DS thing will get some proper decent titles soon

    zelda oot
    mgs3
    resi mercenaries
    resi revelations

of the 4 3DS that interest me i've played 3... i'm not sure i'll be getting one for a while. NGP i'll be getting first i think (not that we've seen a massive amount of new content on that either, but i can see myself playing a straight port of LBP2 (what with me still playing that)

You have to bear in mind that the average gamer nowadays is used to COD and halo.. Games so basic and easy that require next to no thought or skill... Run into a room, shoot everything, if you die, reload.. and repeat.

    >Nice, but I'd prefer an all new Zelda...

Zelda games take a LOOOONG time to make... look how long the wii one has been in development...
  • Mister-Wario #26 10 months ago

So? I'd rather wait for something new than simply get a slightly re-tweaked version of a 13-year old game. That has been played to death.

I'd rather play it on a big screen though. I've used a 3DS and whilst 3D is a nice addition to games, it is in no way essential. Framerate was never an issue for this game to me. Oh and it has rumble - which to me personally does make an awfully big difference. Just my PoV though - I know lots of people feel differently. Oh, and the mirror shield has a better design than the version they used for the GC versions and onwards. ;)

As for Master Quest, I always thought that was a bit of a cop-out. The only addition to the rooms being moved around was those whitish-clear blocks that appeared everywhere. I've seen much better ROM hacks.

    @smelly

What I run into, as I assume many others do, is that in the limited time you have time to play games, the last thing you want is to continuously die, over and over again.

I like Dead Space, but dying 4 times with only an hour to play doesn't allow for much progression, and ends up being more frustrating than fun.

The guide is only optional, and it's best for the industry to let as many people play at whatever difficulty they like.
  • Serebii #29 10 months ago

    @geeza2020

Actually, according to the press release, the Master Quest here is different. It has souped up puzzles, increased difficulty and has Hyrule mirrored. This is different to the Master Quest on the bonus disk
  • NewbieZilla #30 10 months ago

I couldn't give a toss about 3D, but a spruced up Ocarina? I'll certainly be putting time into that.
  • Toothball #31 10 months ago

It's nice to have some extra stuff, but I also have little interest in playing Ocarina of Time again. I really enjoyed it on the N64, and in those days I somehow had the time to get through it five or six times. Today I'm lucky to get through a game once, so I can do without remakes despite an increasing need to have something to play on my 3DS.
  • fizzyfish #32 10 months ago

I'm glad that it's a separate mode and not simply a way of padding out the endgame of the main quest... *glares at Wind Waker*
  • TruSmiles #33 10 months ago

This is out the same day as Child of Eden *cries* I can only afford one :(
  • NewbieZilla #34 10 months ago

"increasing need to have something to play on my 3DS."

Ah, one of the putting your cart before the horse type. The 3DS isn't worth picking up yet. Will be months before the good games start coming out. For one whos time is so valuable, your money doesn't seem to be.

guide vids? knowledge + time = devolution ... ? Im no maths type but thats no good
  • WinterSnowblind #36 10 months ago

I wasn't expecting much from the extra content, but they've still managed to disappoint. Well done.
The game will still be amazing, of course.
  • goatjugsoup #37 10 months ago

i think this is quite evil of them, i really dont wanna buy a 3ds but i also dont wanna miss out on this game

Not if it's at the cost of REAL extra content that could have otherwise been included but isn't because of the time and money used on these guides. That way, for those who really love Zelda games and have been following the series for decades are still missing out on all of that 64DD content that we could have had.

I can't blame them though; loads of people will re-buy this for nostalgia, plus there's a whole new audience to appreciate it. Even though this makes the most economical sense, I miss the Nintendo of the N64 days.
