Rome! Madrid! Paris! Birmingham!

The Pokémon Company has announced touring details for the 2011 Pokémon Video Game Championships.

The competition will criss-cross Europe and North America in the coming months, before a final showdown this August in San Diego.

Do you know your Charmander from your Chandelure? Your Litwik from your Lickitung? Nintendo has once again designated Birmingham's NEC as the UK's pocket monster Mecca. Battling begins there in June, with space for 1024 Pokémon trainers to duel and probably get their photos taken with a man in a Pikachu costume. But beware, entry is determined on a first come, first served basis.

Victory gifts the top eight prizes, glory, and entrance into the World Championship final.

The only caveat is players must use the latest versions of the Pokémon series, Black and White, which launched last month in Europe to massive sales. The pair blasted past the one million mark in 10 days, and have now clocked up a staggering seven million copies worldwide.

I took part in the first one of these back in 2000. Won four matches (getting a gym badge with each victory) and then lost to a kid dressed as Ash Ketchum.

I'm nearly 33 and I'm happy to admit I play the game but I think I'd be embarassed to be there, mainly scared of furtive looks and fearful of accusations of grooming.

As much as I love the Pokemon games even at the age of 24, in the day and age of online play there's nothing sadder than seeing grown men kneel at a battling table designed for childre

At 28 i'm sure this is "not for me" but would love to go. Maybe in a couple of years when my kid is old enough to play i'll go along with my own copy as "support"

That gives me roughly a month and a half to find that Gypsy wish booth from the film 'Big', or it's going to have to be an axe to the knees and razor to the tash. Pokemon is wasted on Children, none of them will be old enough to even remember the first release, let alone master every region. Sigh, lament, etc.

Get there early then.
I remember wanting to go to the first one when I was a kid. Sadly, my parents didn't think that was a good use of time. Now, I'm too self respecting to do that..

Is there a maximum age to enter? Quite odd that there are no tournaments held in the region/country where Pokemon was created in the first place though!
