Nintendo farms out Ocarina of Time 3DS

Secret of Mana creator takes charge.

As one of gaming's indisputable all-time classic, you'd have thought Nintendo would be handling the forthcoming 3DS remake internally. Well, not so.

According to Siliconera, Nintendo has put the project in the hands of a little known Japanese studio called Grezzo Games with only one title to its name – Japan-only 2010 WiiWare effort Line Attack Heroes.

Before you start fearing the worst, bear in mind that Grezzo was set up by former Square Enix employee Koichi Ishii. As well as working on a number of Final Fantasy titles dating right back to the 1987 original, he also directed classic SNES action RPG Secret of Mana.

Safe hands, we'd say.

As revealed earlier today, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D launches on 17th June.

    Remake? I thought it was going to be like an HD update. Are they actually redoing the whole thing?
  • Machetazo #3 1 year ago

    So, not only are they re-re...etc releasing OoT, but they're using the guy to do so who could instead be helping release (even maybe, for HD platforms download) Secret of Mana, that we haven't seen often, and definitely widely enough. No, I'm not happy with that.

    Depends on the definition of remake. It's the same game with updates graphics (new models and textures) and also added content. Quite a lot of work going into this, however, I'm not quite sure what the de-facto definition of remake really is.

    They are adding new stuff to it. I haven't read up, or even tried finding any specifics, truth be told.

    'Remakes' are nothing to fear, it's when you hear 'reimaginings' that panic really sets in....

    This begs the question... what are Nintendo's internal development teams actually doing at the minute?

    ...because they've got relatively little in the pipeline.
  • giapel #8 1 year ago

    @Capa26
    wait till E3. Usually, after a hardware release, their E3 is all about the software so I'm expecting similar things this year
  • TonyHarrison #9 1 year ago

    They seem to be outsourcing a lot lately, it makes me think their internal teams must be working on something big.
  • BonzoBanana #10 1 year ago

    Well its not a HD remake thats for sure considering the 3DS is sub standard definition. New textures and some new content and a £40 price tag.

    I must admit I'm curious to know what Nintendo are spending their time on, Wii 2 software a possiblity?
  • bungawhat #11 1 year ago

    well, "grezzo" in italian it's a piece of slang that stands for rough, unpolished, or like someone who complacently burps in a crowded place could be called: it doesn't bode so well....
  • dudefella #12 1 year ago

    This year, Wii HD announcement. I want to believe!
  • Der_tolle_Emil #13 1 year ago

    Very recent rumors say that there will be a Wii price cut around E3, around $150 (incl. a game). I don't think it's likely that Nintendo will announce yet another piece of hardware this year. I expect quite a few software announcements for the 3DS and I suspect that Nintendo will announce a new big (last?) Wii title of one of their classic IPs (Pikmin, F-Zero?).

    Co-op confirmed?
  • cherryuk #15 1 year ago

    Secret of Mana is far better than Ocarina of Time IMO, why do people keep raving about it?
  • AcidSnake #16 1 year ago

    @Bunga:
    It's also how we describe unprocessed oil...So maybe a remake which is unprocessed?...Or slick?...
  • KrazyFace #17 1 year ago

    I dunno, this does worry me a little bit. I'm a big Zelda fan so I'd be crushed if I found bits of it had gone turn-based or something.
  • Beano #18 1 year ago

    @ianegg : It's a port with improved textures and models. The "remake" term is misused these days, most "remakes" are actually just ports with improved visuals.

    Just off the top of my head...

    Super Mario 3ds
    Zelda Wii
    Kid Icarus
    Mario Kart 3ds
    Rhythm Heaven
    Paper Mario 3ds
    Animal Crossing

    Do you think these games make themselves?
  • Beano #20 1 year ago

    @spazmo : And a brand new 3D Super Mario for 3DS :D
  • LazyDan #21 1 year ago

    Remember they won't be touching the gameplay for the most part (save for any extra secret new dungeons, if any.) I imagine they'll be mainly responsible for the new interfaces/menus and upgrading textures etc. And of course, Nintendo aren't just going to drop one of their hot properties in someone elses hands and piss off (not these days anyway...) There will be documents, supervisors and Nintendo based quality control to make sure it still comes out smelling of Nintendo.

    Just like how Pilotwings Resort was part-developed by a US company, but still feels entirely like a Nintendo game.

    safe hands I say too, the impossible to forget Secret of Mana is STILL one of the best action RPG's, I'm not concerned !
