MW2 security patch nearly ready

For all platforms.

An all platforms patch for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will launch soon, Infinity Ward has announced.

It will address "security issues that have affected online play", community man Robert Bowling said on the game's official forum.

The patch, which has finished production and is now going through internal quality assurance, will release for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

"Modern Warfare 2" and "security" have enjoyed a strained relationship following the release of hacker George "GeoHot" Hotz's PS3 jailbreak code onto the internet.

Last month Bowling, aka fourzerotwo, took to the official Infinity Ward forum to blame PS3 Modern Warfare 2 hacks on the console's compromised security.

"Sony has recently acknowledged a breach in security on the PS3 which resulted in games to become exposed to exploits and hacks," Bowling said.

"Modern Warfare 2 is no exception to this security exploit and we understand that some of you have experienced problems with stats and other issues associated with this."

Apparently PS3 Modern Warfare 2 players are susceptible to hacks that affect their statistics and, in some cases, delete their progress.

According to Bowling, Infinity Ward was powerless in the matter.

"Games rely on the security of the encryption on the platforms they're played on, therefore; updates to the game through patches will not resolve this problem, unless the security exploit itself is resolved on the platform," he said.

Was he wrong?

Following that controversial post, Bowling followed up with another that revealed Infinity Ward was working to resolve hacking issues.

The studio's "main focus" was on "preventing hackers from affecting legitimate players" and "addressing users who have already been affected", he said.

The patch will also address a "small geo exploit on the map Fuel". Players exploited it to get inside a rock on the outskirts of the map, apparently.

"The patch, which has finished production and is now going through internal quality assurance, will release for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360."

Ahhh, are these the same QA guys that spotted the original problems with the game...?

wtf...i didnt see anymore hackers since last update of sony
  • stephenb #3 1 year ago

I suppose a janitor, tea lady and a community manager would be powerless to stop hackers tbh.

"Ahhh, are these the same QA guys that spotted the original problems with the game...? "

Those QA guys will be just as frustrated as you, they spotted and reported these issues prior to release and the devs did nothing to resolve them, now they're having a test a patch for a 16month old game to fix what shouldn't have been broken to begin with.

    @Murton,

The devs will be frustrated too, they can only fix what the production team let them fix......

Yeah now how about fixing the problem where games are hosted on residential connections that are completely overwhelmed by the load a 12 player game puts on them? When I was host it was a shitty experience for everybody because my connection isn't suitable for that yet the game decided it'd be great for hosting.

If it is the security of the PS3 that is at fault, why are they patching all versions?

(apologies if someone has already posted this)

Finally I'll be able to get to level 70. Been level 69 for ages but dare not go on it.

Thought I was only one who thought maps in blops were kinda dull. Thought jungle was fun, kinda enjoyed hanoi, but after that they were kinda dull, if not from gameplay perspective , then at least to look at. Mw2 maps were full of bright vivid colours and felt wider and more open than blops.

@gromit.. Nice, my sparse playing has proves that I have no clue what the last updates did.. Cool, now I've ditched blops, I can go back to mw2 full time.

A few points spring to mind
    1) The 360 version has been modable pretty much since came out. The only reason I can think of why it isn't as noticable as on the PS3 now is because the kiddies didn't wanna risk having to explain to mommy why the £40 sub they just got has been deleted by MS.

    2) It's modable via a gamesave edit. That just screams bad coding to me. Why does the game look for non-adjustable server settings like floor friction, or the ability to manually fly an AC-130, on your save file? Probably the same reason you can somehow remove people's EXP or generally screw up their save over a network session. There is no ingame action that I can think of to make your level go down during a match, so why even put it into the game for people to abuse?

    3) Another bash at Geohot over IW's bad code, EG? 10/10 would rage again.

Can Sony/ MS and Infinty Ward start banning the fools who think its ok to hack/ wreck game online/ cheat when everyone else is playing the game the 'normal' released version game.

The hackers will stop when then go online use their cheats/hack and find their console has been perma banned from PSN and XBLive.

Please please start banning these ppl.
