EA: There will be an MMA 2

Despite poor sales of the original.

EA Sports has guaranteed gamers a sequel to its UFC: Undisputed rival MMA despite its terrible sales.

"There is definitely going to be an EA Sports MMA 2," EA Sports' Jeff Ecker said in a podcast with wrestling site Figure Four Daily, reported by CrunchGear.

It's not a question of if, but when, apparently. The original plan was for the game to alternate years with the Fight Night franchise, which has Fight Night Champion due in 2011, but that plan looks set to change.

Analysts described EA Sports' MMA game as an unmitigated failure following its release.

"EA's recently released MMA appears to be more or less DOA at retail, while UFC recently announced an extension of its license with THQ, likely putting an end to EA's efforts to expand into the mixed martial arts genre," said Doug Creutz of Cowan & Company in October.

Matt Edwards awarded a respectable 7/10 in Eurogamer's EA Sports MMA review, but the game could only manage a number 23 debut on the UK all-formats chart.

A lot of people seemed to dislike the demo, but I really liked the controls, and the basics of the fighting system. I bought UFC 2009 on launch day, but haven't bought any since after the grind of the career mode. If they can put a proper, solid singleplayer mode in MMA 2 I'll be interested.

the demo did suck. It had a major A.I bug!

when you fought bobby lashley all he did was spam takedowns. It was silly and very unrealistic! I have heard the full game is much better though. I will buy it but still waiting for price drop.

full props to EA for sticking with the MMA series. I thought they wouldnt but nice to see they will try and make the game grow in support. I am really not sure how they can do that though, they need strikforce to become more popular and they will need to put in some aggressive marketing.

Also they should try and sign up more UFC fighters who never signed away there likenesses rights.

I was one of the guys who hated the demo. Controls felt broken to me (I know you could change it, but I deleted the demo pretty damn fast).

Still, I hope they come back with a better one. Of course, 90% of all the really exciting fighters are in the UFC and WEC, so... :p

UFC 2010 was rubbish.. UFC 2009 was exellent (except for the grinding).. MMA.. not risking my cash on it after the horrible (and stupid) demo.

    @TheDellBingo

I had a similiarly shitty impression from the demo too.

What aspects did you think improved your opinion about the game when you had gotten a hold of the full version?

TheDellBingo: As Kobashi says, in the demo, Bobby Lashley does almost nothing but spam takedown attempt after takedown attempt. Seeing as Bobby Lashley was one of only two heavyweights playable in the demo (Alastair Overeem was the other), a hell of a lot of people ended up with a frustrating experience with the demo playing against him, which was understandably enough to put a lot of people off.

Don't get me wrong, I like the look of what I have seen from video reviews and such, my main reservation is the strikes don't appear to have much mustard on them if you know what I mean. There doesn't seem to be a lot of impact there.

On a more general note though like with Mirror's Edge and Dead Space, I applaud EA's realisation that they are onto a good thing here and are not letting the figures deter them from continuing on, refining the game and hopefully by proxy, finding a larger audience.
