It's due to launch in Japan this winter.

SEGA has announced plans to release a new instalment in the Shenmue series.

The twist is that this one will be for mobile phones. According to Kotaku, it will be released for the Yahoo! Japan version of Mobage-town, a popular mobile social network.

The game is titled Shenmue Town and is billed as the "third" Shenmue game. It's due to launch in Japan this winter.

The last Shenmue game, released back in 2003, was rumoured to be the most expensive game ever made. Take a trip down memory lane with our review.

It's been clarified that it's not a mobile game:

The original version of this story listed the game as a cell phone title. While the Mobagetown service is a popular mobile gaming service, this announcement concerns a PC service from Yahoo and Mobagetown operator DeNA. Tremendous apologies to both Sega and Shenmue fans.

Wow I nearly jizzed my pants then I saw mobile

I hope they don't actually continue the story in this mobile game though and it's a spin off as I'll probably never play it. Still I see this as a good sign that we will get a proper third game. One day...

Never played the originals but can actually imagine that this type of game lends itself well to the short play sessions that are ideal for mobile gaming. So wouldn't mind an iPhone/iPad version for example. Given that it would be designed for those devices instead of just a console/PC game port.

At first I was very angry at this report & just wanted to type some abuse for sega,
but after dwelling with the news for a while I do think it's a positive thing for Shenmue fans. I always believed they'll be a Shenmue 3 not just because of some geeky nostalgic hopeful wish(well yeah maybe) but because I'm sure sega are very well aware that there are legions of fans that would gladly donate an organ for another instalment of the series. Whenever there's Shenmue news, it's good news for the fans believe it.
We're about to see the release of at least the first game on PSN/Xbox Live so be sure to buy that play the hell out of it and wait some more but hopefully not too long !

Shenmue II was released at the end of 2001 on the Dreamcast in the UK.

So that's now 9 years I've been waiting for a third game to appear. This isn't what I was hoping for.
