UK chart: Kane & Lynch 2 top dog

IO's gritty shooter does the business.

Square Enix's third-person shooter Kane & Lynch 2 has entered the UK all-formats chart at number one.

It pushed last week's top dog Toy Story 3 into second.

K&L2 saw an almost equal split of sales across the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

56 per cent bought the gritty shooter on Xbox 360, 41 per cent on PlayStation 3 and 2 per cent on PC.

IO's game appears to have deflected mixed review scores, although strong promotion on telly will have contributed heavily towards its sales success.

Eurogamer gave it 4/10.

Elsewhere, Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption drops to third, LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 holds fast in fourth, Ubisoft's Just Dance moves up one to fifth, and DS game Art Academy drops one place to sixth.

Super Mario Galaxy 2, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, Dance on Broadway and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 make up the rest of the top 10.

    Piss poor game being bought because of media brainwashing shocker!

    Here's why people claim "PC gaming is dying". Garbage just doesn't fly on the PC. Halo on XBOX? The fourteen year olds that make up the player base claim it to be a masterpiece. Halo on PC? Garbage. Gears of War? Ditto.

    What's a shitty game on the PC is a classic to a console tard. So bad developers (surprise, there are more of those than there are good ones) opt to release their generic trash on consoles. Number of PC titles goes down, number of quality PC titles remains the same. "PC gaming is dying".

    Plenty of people who aren't 14 would rate the design of Halo and Gears, at least pick some decent examples.

    what are you's on about, the more something sells the better it is, well apparently.
  • berelain #15 2 years ago

    WHo bought this? Who? WHY?
  • darkmorgado #16 2 years ago

    @Atomicbanana

    Deus Ex 2 - massively dumbed down for the consoles. Console mags gave it decent scores, PC mags saw it for the dumbed-down excuse of a seuqel that it was.

    Thief 3 - suffered on PC because console limitations meant each area had to be broken down by loading screens and stupid "mist" that meant all of a sudden a corridor was empty despite the fact you were being chased down it by half a dozen guards not 3 seconds earlier.

    Modern Warfare 2. Do I really need to even explain that one?

  • miiiguel #17 2 years ago

    @Sweefyt : I don't think the "PC" needs friends like you. Bad example of its community.
  • bad09 #18 2 years ago

    I think K&L2 is pretty decent for a shooter, and quite enjoying it so don't really understand the hate TBH, nice to see I'm not alone looking at the charts.

    No surprise here, mass marketing + guns + gullible masses = sale.

    QED. :p
  • Skurmedel #21 2 years ago

    I completed it saturday. It's just very thin on content; but I don't think its shit. It has some refreshing ideas, although I'm bummed I didn't get to see the main characters wangs. "Who's bigger, Kane or Lynch?" was a question in my head.

    But on PC it was a nice distraction; I wouldn't get it for full price though. Have yet to delve into multiplayer.

    Well at least Forgotten Sands is having a strong showing thanks to the massive discount it's had. A hidden gem IMO.
  • Retro_ #25 2 years ago

    I'm really enjoying this game, looks like I'm in the minority however. The only problem with this game is it's length at maybe 6 hours for the campaig but Co-op with a friend is great and online is a riot..... once you alter your mindset to 'get' the game. This game sets out to be an exhausting blast from start to finish and it perfectly achieves that. It's pretty hardcore and I welcome IO having the balls to not follow the crowd.
  • Nephirion #26 2 years ago

    The review on EG was defiantely out of sync with general opinion as shown in sales and overall reviews
  • neems #27 2 years ago

    I wouldn't get too excited about the (lack of) pc sales, as it doesn't include digital download figures, including (obviously) the ubiquitous Steam. Do these charts include online retailers?
  • bad09 #28 2 years ago

    @neems

    Yeah, it's been in the Steam top sellers for a while and still holding on at the bottom now.
  • ignatiusjreilly #29 2 years ago

    @tigerstyle

    Your comment about sales figures shows the point of that post went completely over your head.

  • Haloboy #30 2 years ago

    Mafia 2 PC is but days away from release. Let's see you lick your own arse when that comes out shall we?
  • darkmorgado #31 2 years ago

    Not at all. PC gaming is in the toilet as far as sales are concerned.

    Try telling that to Blizzard or Valve. Or EA.

    You'll have to wait for the next Sims game to see a top selling PC title, hahaha.

    Yeah because I'm sure WoW: Cataclysm, Diablo 3, SC2: HOTS, Civilsation V, Portal 2, Shogun 2: Total War, WH40K Online, Guild Wars 2, and Fallout: New Vegas are all going to completely tank and sink without trace.

    "Try telling that to Blizzard or Valve. Or EA."

    Don't forget Sega they're quite happy to, but then they are only the 2nd biggest PC publisher so I'm sure tigerstyle knows better....

    / yawns at more PC is dead
    / Goes back to Steam
  • soviet_ #33 2 years ago

    @tigerstyle About this time last month a little game called StarCraft II was top of the chart, you may have missed it
  • kinky_mong #34 2 years ago

    So, PC gamers are the smartest. What a shocker.

    However not smart enough to get their lives on tracks so they don't live in their parent's basement when they're 35.
  • darkmorgado #35 2 years ago

    So we now live in a world where $114m is an insignificant amount of money, do we?

    And god forbid that we take into account that very often digital sales aren't accounted for in these things. After all, we all know that Steam is barely keeping afloat.
    Edited by darkmorgado at 23/08/10 @ 12:37
  • ignatiusjreilly #36 2 years ago

    That's why you see many games where they don't even bother with a PC version, because they know it's not worth it

    Indeed, many poor games don't bother with a PC port because they know it won't sell ;)

    As it should be :)
  • Haloboy #37 2 years ago

    @tigerstyle

    SEGA clearly have no grasp of how to deliver properly to the PC market. Two words....

    Alpha Protocol.
  • Darren #38 2 years ago

    A most undeserving chart-topper if you ask me as I have the PC version and it is so dated and generic that five minutes after I've exited the game I struggle to recall what happened. Dull cover-and-shoot until dead, move on to next very similar area, repeat then rinse combat, characters who I couldn't give a shit about, lousy dialogue, some really awful animation, weak graphical detail, bland audio... I actually think the first game was better! Save your cash is my best advice, EG gave the game a 4 for a good reason!
  • bad09 #39 2 years ago

    So Tigerstyle what exactly is your point? Yes console money is more but in what way does that mean PC is dead? All these companies have said they are very happy with PC revenue (epsecially EA and SEGA) so what's your point?
  • ignatiusjreilly #40 2 years ago

    because they know that PC games don't sell as well as console games.

    Everyone knows this. Why do you keep repeating it? The original theory that you replied to was that it's harder to sell crappy games to a PC gamer - your arguments are consistently missing the point by emphasising the huge sales of games on consoles.
  • darkmorgado #41 2 years ago

    I've heard people saying that PC Gaming is dead for nearly 20 years now, since around the time the SNES came out.
    It's a fucking slow death if people are still trotting out the same old non-statement 20 years later.

    Oh btw -

    STALKER - combined series sales of over 6m worldwide, according to the developer.
    The Witcher - first game has sold millions and was PC exclusive.

    But yeah, PC games don't sell, blah blah, the platform is dying, blah blah.
  • Lee_Morris #42 2 years ago

    56%, 41% and 2% adds up to 99%! Am I missing something?
  • darkmorgado #43 2 years ago

    @Lee_Morris

    There's always a 1% margin of error.
  • PoundHound #44 2 years ago

    I'm sorry to say I bought this. I'm a bit miffed at myself because Eurogamer (and others) told me it was rotten, but I went ahead anyway. It was the first game after the summer drought and I just had to buy something! Anything!!

    Anyway, played co-op campaign and neither of us liked it much. The big problem is, in a shooter it helps to have guns that actually kill people! It's so frustrating to see a guy in a string vest taking 8 or 9 bullets in the (unarmoured) chest and then watch as he casually strolls off to find cover. It's a shame really, because they have implemented a fine cover system, which works as well as any, but I'll take decent weapons over an iffy cover sytem any day.
  • UsernamePending #45 2 years ago

    "There's always a 1% margin of error."

    Don't stand for shoddy stats.

    I demand we see the decimal places NOW!
  • Kilroy #46 2 years ago

    Well, hopefully this allows IO to finish developing Hitman 5...
  • Goodfella #47 2 years ago

    PC gaming isn't dead at all, it's really amusing that people (console fanboys, yet another breed) keep spouting that statement.

    All that has happened is that the PC industry has shifted in terms of the content that is delivered, such as subscription MMO's or games like Starcraft which are best played online, so pirates can't play (properly)
  • BlinxHDD #48 2 years ago

    Shame, Kane & Lynch's a bit cack, but then so was the original and hordes supposedly still bought that. Not a lot of new quality games to push the rotters down.
  • Skurmedel #49 2 years ago

    I don't understand why it matters what sells more, maybe the PC is more niche, but there is a lot of niche markets. Ferrari's, Leica cameras, high quality weed, designer diapers, tasteful wallpapers... the PC is may be in decline, but dying, no. I'll start caring when all the PC games are total crap.
    Edited by Skurmedel at 23/08/10 @ 14:58
  • Sweefyt #50 2 years ago

    @tigerstyle

    And not a single console-exclusive save for RDR on the entire fucking list is worth a shit. Whenever some godawful game is released across all major platforms, the numbers are always similar to Kane & Lynch (Exhibits: CoD6, Halo, Gears of War) i.e. (depending on marketing) great console sales, terrible PC sales. It's not a "superiority card", it's statistical fact.

    But please, if being butthurt and rating me down makes you feel better about being stuck with every shitbag dev that just couldn't cut it in PC development, you go right ahead. I'll be busy playing every Valve/Blizzard/Bioware game that makes up for lack of sales by being infinitely better than whatever crappy "triple platinum" franchise you console fags are stuck 'enjoying'.

    good thing for K&L 2 ,next time Eurogamer may rethink about lettiing retards reviewing good games.
  • patchbox360 #52 2 years ago

    im not letting reviews get in the way of me playing this game, i've just got around to playing dead space which got a 7/10 on Eurogamer and its awesomeness.
  • mixpython #53 2 years ago

    could have been fun.. But in coop online.. the amount of bugs was astonishing.. I tried and tried to play through them.. even after the game crashed twice, and took my partners gun away so he was running around empty handed and every time he could find a gun ( which were few and far between on his screen but plentiful on mine??????) and picked it up it only had a couple rounds in it . If you ask me they release 5 hours of an unfinished product.. not to mention the awkward menus in the multi player.. still trying to figure out how to join a game as a party and not have to start your own and wait around for ages just hoping that someone will join!! Why did they have to fuk it up TWICE!!!
  • mixpython #54 2 years ago

    @patchbox..
    You are right not to let reviews dampen your enthusiasm to play a game.. as you said Dead space IS amazing.. I would have given it a 10, by far the best horror game ever made on a console (cant say for pc as i dont play pc games) but do read what i have written in previous post and be warned!

    Again! I'm all smiles with Galaxy still in the top 10.

    I'm thrilled to see a great game sell well!

    Also, this bodes for more of the same in the future. Wonder how Metroid: M Other will fare.
  • Bluetooth #57 2 years ago

    Maybe IO will use the money to finally get their arses out and start on Hitman.

    Probably not though.
  • TRUTH #58 2 years ago

    Shit game!...shit reviews!...sells a lot - thanks to dumb gamers!
  • ReapingAngel #59 2 years ago

    I bought the game and frankly speaking, Eurogamer's review was kind of harsh. The game is refreshing and its kind of fun if you found games like Max Payne for its insane frantic action. Online is fun too. In my opinion, the game deserved to be on top.
  • TRUTH #60 2 years ago

    65/100 on Metacritic...average at best!
  • UncleLou #61 2 years ago

    Game sales in 1,000s: -

    Wii = 5,740
    PS3 = 3,560
    360 = 2,300
    PC = 1,490

    The second biggest PC publisher you say? Seems they sell FAR more games on consoles to me, but I guess their financial report is probably wrong or something.

    2/3rds of the sales they have on the 360 (with fewer games published), from a publisher that's got a portfolio that's 90% typical console games (their only PC game of note is the Total War games) sounds pretty damn good to me.

    /shrug

    edit: forgot Football Manager in the UK. That probably explains why they are the "second biggest PC publisher", because that must be a very locally restricted phenomenon.

    And while we're at it:

    EA's financial report

    PC in second place (behind different consoles each time) in net revenue in 4 out of 5 quarters, tsk tsk.

    I'm surprised no one else is un shocked by this. Nothin against the game, I think it's alright but it's obvious why it's number 1. There's fuck all else coming out at the mo other than an Italian GTA clone

    Looking at the reviews for it today I'd rather have K&L anyday
