PS4 top-selling US console in June despite Kinect-less Xbox One launch

While Mario Kart 8 drives Wii U sales.

PlayStation 4 was the best-selling console in the US in June, Sony has announced, a title that the console has now held for six months running.

Microsoft's decision to begin selling the Xbox One without Kinect (and at a cheaper price) helped double the console's sales month-on-month. But it is telling that, even then, the console still could not beat Sony's machine.

Nintendo saw a 233 per cent increase in Wii U sales over June 2013, largely thanks to the May launch of Mario Kart 8.

Wii U software sales were up by an even greater margin - 373 per cent year-on-year.

3DS also had a good month - its hardware sales were up by more than 55 per cent over May, with quirky sim Tomodachi Life selling more than 175,000 copies.

Overall, Watch Dogs was the best-selling game of the month. Mario Kart 8 was second with sales of 470,000 copies (now at 885,000 in the US overall and around 2.5m worldwide).
