PS3 hacker expects to go to jail
The money has run out.
German PlayStation 3 jailbreak hacker Alexander "Graf Chokolo" Egorenkov expects to go to jail after admitting he has run out of money to battle Sony in court.
Egorenkov attempted to restore Linux to the PS3 after Sony forced its removal with the firmware v3.21 update. Sony is suing him for one million Euros, claiming his work helped enable piracy.
"No money left any more," he wrote in a comment on his website.
"Going to jail soon probably because I cannot pay court costs. But I'm ready to stand up for everything I said and go to jail for that, too.
"It's not important to win, more important is to show them that we are ready to fight, that they cannot scare me off that easily. Yeah, I'm ready to go to jail for my beliefs and my principles."
Egorenkov's website calls for donations.
"Guys, I never wanted to take money from anybody for my work," he wrote. "And I always shared my work and code with PS3 developers and community. Recently I was working on bringing Linux to PS3 back, as you all know, unfortunately SONY managed to stop me."
Egorenkov vowed to continue his work when he leaves prison – if, of course, he goes to prison.
"Most of people probably think that all computer and kernel hackers are weak kids, hiding in a cellar, eating pizza whole day, writing software and looking for attention," he said.
"Maybe, but that's NOT me. And I will get out eventually and continue my work. My work means very much to me."
Sony sued George "Geohot" Hotz, the main person behind the PlayStation 3 hack, in January. The case was settled out of court in April.
Yesterday it emerged that London cops had arrested an Essex man suspected of having links to hacker groups Anonymous and LulzSec.
