System Shock remake still happening says Nightdive Studios, now due in 2020

siro

@Skirlasvoud Actually, it is about the old version. Creating a game is not
only the art. They used unity, which is not an efficient choice for this kind of project. Unreal simply has better pipelines to create a 3D game.

Vertical slice means a short fully produced part of a game, which is playable. That is often created to convince publishers of a project, but in this case, was used for the kickstarter, meaning the alpha demo created in Unity which created the look of the original game so nicely. So the one you and me, and probably everyone out there liked.

Then, Nightdive swapped to Unreal as an engine, and started deviating from the original game, indulging their developers, instead of delivering on the promise of the pitch, making most fans unhappy, if not madly disappointed.

I don't recall if it was part of the announcement of that switch, or when facing the negative feedback about it, but Nightdive made a statement that production following what they did for the alpha would be too costly and not realistic. Whether that would be true for if only recreating (this was the sentiment of the statement) or if it was because developing all that new stuff is less efficient in Unity than in UE, was not clarified. With the change of direction again now, it kind of seems the latter.

At any rate, they threw a lot of fans' money out of the window while breaking their promise and creating something no one wanted.
While they are not liable due to kickstarter's terms and conditions, they certainly have lost all the faith put in them. At least for me, but I hope that is true for many.

Please excuse the long, detailed reply.

@televizor They were saying that they would not be able to create the whole game that way, as it would be too costly. The vertical slice allowed for such format.

With that Alpha they hit it out of the park in terms of the feeling of the station. Enemies were a bit ugly, as was the inventory, but still, it was pure GOTY material.
Bummed to have to wait for another two years for something to materialize.

A recent poll in Japan has resulted in him to be the person with the fourth highest level of public awareness in Japan, with 95.7% of the Japanese people knowing him (Prime Minister Abe ranked third at 95.8%). He's certainly among the best known Japanese outside of the country as well.

System Shock reboot put on "hiatus", 18 months after it raised $1.3 million on Kickstarter

siro

I'm super disappointed about this story developed.

The first System Shock is my personal all-time favourite. Sure, it had convoluted controls, but its atmosphere was lightyears ahead of the competition and still works today just as well.

The alpha demo vertical slice they released was simply amazing, a fan's dream made reality. When they announced the swap to Unreal Engine, from remake to
"reimagining", including terrible screenshots, and describing a lot of changes no fan would want, it was to me the worst gaming news of 2017.
And, to be honest, there news was still worse than this "reimagining" being cancelled.

Hopes on System Shock 3 and Underworld Ascendant then.

Forza Horizon 3's Xbox One X update is a true showcase for console 4K

siro

I bought this on PC fairly recently, and technically, it is a marvel. Full 4K, everything dialed to max, 100% 60 FPS lock (actually running beyond that using adaptive sync). Seems it took a lot of patches to get there, though, and no HDR.

What I wonder is, if the One can play this at 30 FPS locked, do the games go variable frame rate if you use the adaptive sync-ability of the console? Adaptive sync is such a boon!

In regards to the game itself: I was quite disappointed with it. Not sure where to put the finger, but I feel the action and also the graphics are just to clean and clinic, compared to a Burnout, or even NfS.

After Star Wars Battlefront 2, EA changes Need for Speed Payback loot crates, progression

siro

Does anyone know how much more has the earning increased? The dev post is not concrete enough.

I read that you had to grind a race until you won up to 10-15 times in order to progress. Is one single win sufficient to proceed after this change? "One" is exactly the number of wins you should need in order to progress in the game, without any MT, for me to want to play this game.

Repeating a race you don't win is a vital part of arcade racing, but having to grind repeated wins is unacceptable.

Note: I owned all NfS so far, from the very first NfS on. I was excited for this release when it was first unveiled, but due to the MT debacle, I currently do not intend to buy this one. However, I will definitely buy it once win grinding is confirmed unnecessary.

Fun article to read, and could kind of relate. Never had as many adventure type of nights again than in my time in Japan.

It's unlikely though that you kicked someone's face in at the back of a Shibuya McDonald's. Kabukicho is part of Shinjuku. It's not so far away, but decidedly too far for the scope of the map in the Yakuza games. :)

I find the concept of investing into games via Fig intriguing, however asking my self if it is trustworthy?

What I would like to know is how the developer decides the return on investment. Are there clear rules given by Fig for participating that define this? Or can you end up with no or puny returns, even if the game turns out to be the next smash hit?

Would it be possible to investigate, EG?

The Last of Us patch 1.08 for PS4 Pro analysed

siro

Aren't such questionable articles like those from DF about PS4 Pro framerate disadvantages in 1080p versions (even if the loss is around only 1 fps and in turn deliver much enhanced IQ), a main driver in this decision?

If you tell them and all the readers that frame rate is bad on PS4 Pro, and present that as the only concern, then Sony will take the logical step to remedy that.

Thanks for nothing.

Burnout Paradise is gaming perfection

siro

Summarizing my feelings towards Paradise in one word is simple: "disappointment".

Adding the overworld did nothing to the Burnout formula, it only diluted the experience. For me, it broke the game - it remains the only Burnout, and actually even the only Criterion racer, that I didn't care to finish.
In NfS Most Wanted for example, they managed to make the overworld work much better.

That sounds a tad expensive to be honest. Anything but new story missions (is 5 a lot?) should be cheap. In particular, the additional difficulty settings coming via DLC seem a bit shady.

FIFA 17 coins - how to earn FIFA coins quickly and for free in Ultimate Team

siro

So, you suggest actually playing to earn coins, earning 600 for a win with a bonus that you can't have enabled all the time. That win takes 15 minutes. Even assuming you'd win every game, that won't take you anywhere near 5000~8000 points you suggest. Not even if winning the online leagues which you imply (because everyone is going to win those all the time).

Then take me, a player that is happy to win an average amount of games (so half of them). Realistically, I'll top out around 2k points. Tbh, I think it's even less in reality.

Please don't make point earning look easier than it is. If it actually was, FUT wouldn't be the well-oiled, earning-optimized money grabbing machine it is.
