Eurogamer's Top 50 Games of 2017: 30-21

bratsampson

@porkface Honestly, I think EG need to reassess this list in the cold light of day and have a real think about the formula/method used to create it.

It's flawed as fuck.

I mean, this is all very entertaining, but it looks like you could just as easily make a list out of NPD numbers and just declare Destiny/Battlefront/CODWW 2 as the GOTYs.

These seem to also be the games they just recently dropped the prices of, which is a bit annoying because I saw GR2 was cheaper than usual the other day, picked it up and now not a week later it's even cheaper (assuming I picked it up alongside something else).

Hrrrm.

"I've seen people literally spend $15,000 on Mass Effect multiplayer cards"

bratsampson

I listened to the whole podcast today and thought he seemed well informed and well spoken throughout.

I agree with basically everything he said, and I'm white.

The industry *does* need better representation at the high end and in the board rooms, and I can absolutely believe some shitty middle managers have fallen upwards through multiple unsuccessful projects while those working at the coal face are shuttled around until they burn out.

EDIT: Looks like GG have put a target on this guy a while back considering the negging patrol doing their best in this thread. Keep on denying progress, you scumbags :)

Bastion and Transistor were both pretty unique takes on splicing genres together while also adding their own spice to the mix. The worlds were beautiful and mysterious, the writing was decadent and engaging, and the soundtracks were superlative.

Glad to hear this is the same, but still wary that it's possibly a 'sports game' in disguise, as I'm terrible at those...

Holy crap, they actually did it. The Speed-running grail of skips.

For the record, the idea/dream of being able to skip this barrier has been around long enough to become a running joke. For the vast majority of that time, nobody thought they'd ever actually be able to skip it.

Nice article. He's a pretty versatile VA too, he played Nate in The Book of Unwritten Tales adventure games. I only know this because at one point in the first one Nate's in disguise as some guard or executioner-type character, and for a minute or so... It's Geralt's voice coming through the speakers. It took me a second or two to place it, but then I went and did the research and yeah, same guy!

Brexit blamed for incoming UK App Store price rise

bratsampson

@jonnyd1982 Nah, check the tabloids. Anything less than leaving the single-market is a BETRAYAL and this will be made very clear in today's speech. Now also remember that the *main* reason these angles want out so badly is because *only* then can they escape free movement of people. Which is the real motivator here.

If immigration wasn't the reason then free movement would be ok and this reckless throwing out of all the accessories that came with the bathwater wouldn't be necessary. Hard Brexit is *entirely* about immigration. People talk about alternative solutions such as Switzerland or Norway, which both operate outside the EU bit remain within the single market and with free movement of people. We don't want that, it's not enough for the Express/Mail/Sun, hence we do this instead. All in. None more in.

Why narration? Why is the music so lifeless during the combat sequence? Why from what I've seen does it look like the main thing they've changed from DA:I after Witcher 3 showed how it's done, is to give the player Witcher Vision?

Can The Last Guardian live up to expectations?

bratsampson

I expect another game in the vein of Ico/SotC, featuring a giant bird-dog thing. Expectations should be met pretty easily.

I don't get this concept that somehow because a game had a long development it has to be the greatest game ever or it's a disappointment. That's all on the player for being overhyped or the media for building things up too much. This game shouldn't be thought of or treated any differently to if the 2015 trailer had been the first announcement.

The answer is basically yes, no problem, so long as you don't have stupid expectations, and if you do, that's on you, not the devs or the game.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice review

bratsampson

How does it compare to Dual Destinies, which I thought was far too hand-hold-y and basically, easy. I liked in the originals you could pursue multiple avenues in the investigation, even if (when boiled down) you were meant to hit certain triggers in a certain order. But DD was literally like 'talk with this person, investigate this scene, interrogate this person, talk to this person', in strict sequence, which felt like a bizarre step back from the more free-flowing (feeling, at least) Investigations of the past. I had the same problem with Wright vs Layton too, for what it's worth.

Also, count me as another recommendation for Ace Attorney Investigations 2, which has a Brilliant English fan-translation (they even pulled off the song) available and should be played via any means possible by fans of the series. Absolutely as good as the original trilogy and a crime it didn't get an official conversion.

...Wait, what?? I'm out of the loop on Apple news as it's not something I'm interested in, but this seems completely insane. Why make this proprietary too, especially when (surely almost) all headphones, from your in-ear customs to your two pound fifty temps *all* use this connector?

I mean obviously the answer is $$$ but this seems like their most egregiously anti-consumer attempt at earning the green in ages.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided's annoying microtransactions in the spotlight

bratsampson

Ugh. This shit just keeps on getting worse. Publishers won't learn though, because apparently there are enough fucking idiots out there ready and willing to shell out on in-game currency and level-boosts for a SP game.

At least it sounds like the game wasn't designed to be played that way. If you play through and never even look at this stuff it'll feel like a normal game, but still it shouldn't be there in the first place.

I'm less mad about the pre-order boosts being single-use. They were a dumb addition in the first place.
