Final Fantasy 7 Review

Praetorianer

Ah...I was just browsing, having a look at the pictures and read "It remains Nobuo Uematsu's most accomplished soundtrack."

That was the moment I knew I shouldn't even bother reading the review, as that's clearly a mistake. Everybody knows it's FF III/VI's OST, really everybody.

Anyways played this at its time and am happy about that :)

Microsoft and Sony could struggle next-gen if they fail to embrace free-to-play

Praetorianer

"I think within games you have two needs that people fill. One is the time-filler need. The other is that it's a very important time for me and I want to have a rich experience. Those are two separate needs, I think."

"The other thing is how much are consumers willing to pay to play. I think that consumers who are willing to pay money for a gaming experience are looking for something that is more rich and are willing to spend some of that valuable time on that experience. I believe that as environments change and as the world progresses we're going to have different ways in which people want to spend their time. That being said, I don't think we're going to see the desire to have, again, rich and deep sort of gaming experiences... we're not going to see that vanish. That's not going to go away."

Listen to that man, he's right. I'm seeing a coexistence of both models, but I have to admit that I don't like the F2P model, mostly for the exact same reasons @JoeGuy0 posted.

A conversation with EA's Peter Moore on the thorny issues of DLC, Online Passes and all the rest of it

Praetorianer

@SpaceMidget75

"Moore makes the point that for the majority of gamers, having a connected, digital experience is par for the course."

As a I whiny old fart, I don't recall moaning about connected, digital experiences.

It was how you implemented them.
Peter's wife: "Honey, come to bed. It's already past 11!"

Peter: "Sure honey, gimme a sec, just have to finish something!"

(Peter picks up phone coloured in bright red)

Peter: "It's me. Listen Ric, you read EG too? Yeah that thing about changing game business and stuff...yeah right huh? Most of them are even minors I think!...Na, don't care as long as they still manage to buy BF3 huh?"(laughs) "Listen, you read that thing from the space dwarf? Yes yes, the SpaceMidget75. Works for some kind of business software it whatever blah."

Peter's wife: "Peter! You promised to watch Desperate Housewives with me!"

Peter: "In a minute honey! Ok? Ric, I don't have much time. Let's just buy that Minerva thing and lay him off, shall we? Teehee...oh and you know what? Let's make him pay if he wants to get the stuff from his desk delivered, too!....Yeah, like with that DLC, Ric! Man, we're awesome."

Peter's wife: "Hone..."

Peter: "Cooooming! Ok...Ric, have to go now....Yeah I'm pretending that I'm really watching with her. But you know the drill, 40% attention at max. Hope she'll never read that interview!...Ehheexactlyy...like pretending interest in those forum nerds!" (chuckles) "Ok, what you're up to?...I see, have a good night then. See ya in the office."

..."So honey, did it already start? I really can't wait to see how it will continue!"

Btw. Mr. Moore, I understand the corporate reality you're working in. No offense meant :)

I don't tend to agree with your opinion very often, but you're correct with most of the points you made, except that I think the main audience age has to be widened a bit - that doesn't imply a broader horizon though.

BioWare's Command & Conquer: Generals 2 repurposed for new free-to-play venture

Praetorianer

I'll give the free2play model 2-3 years, at max. It just makes no sense. Either you'll make a pay2win out of it, or it just won't be economically reasonable for publishers. It's just another hype-train a lot of publishers seem to be keen on jumping on to.

Big expectations, hype, a short time bubble, and then afterwards: nothing.

REAL free2play where paying won't bring you any advantage in the game whatsoever just won't work. If there's one lesson learned in business life, then it's "nothing comes for free".

It's just a disguise, a trojan horse so to say, to get your money. Publisher/developers aren't that altruistic.

Mark my words :)

Final Fantasy 13-2 Review

Praetorianer

Yah...I'm just packing my things because I'll be moving to a new flat, and there are all those great games and old consoles I'm taking with me. Some games I put into a box reminded me of the fun I used to had with Japanese RPGs, like Ys Book I&II, Lunar, Chrono Trigger and of course Final Fantasy games, especially 6. I wonder when they lost their magic or if just got too old.

XII was great, says my brother, and maybe he's right. I didn't even feel the slightest bit of curiosity to play it, and that one got rave reviews all over the place. I think this says it all: "[...]world that the previous game failed to make loveable, or even knowable[...]".

Add a "s" to "game" and that's exactly how I feel about FF.

@ChuckNorris

Basically, I'm with you on most of the points you've made. EG is getting worse every day, period. But I don't think review sites have to be "objective" all the time.

If you've found a reviewer with whom you agree most of the time, than that's a good thing and it makes judging a gane's quality in advance a lot easier.

There isn't just a single valid and neutral opinion to a game imo.

Just try to find a reviewer who seems to have a similar taste as you do.

Eurogamer should ask: "Are countless sequels of trite franchises, remakes, bad or no localization, too many shovel-ware games, huge marketing budgets, expensive but bad licenses, and bad treatment of the talented people who actually create games, killing the industry?"It'd be a short article though: "Yes."

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D

Praetorianer

Ocarina of Time doesn't make the case for 3D gaming, but it doesn't need to. Given the original was one of this young medium's most revered experiences, I'm as excited about the chance to play the game again on a fancy new toy as I am about the idea there are people who will be taking their very first steps in this unforgettable adventure.

Most important paragraph imo. Sure, it would be cheaper to buy a N64 somewhere, but really...who wants to do that? I already own one, as well as most other gamers, who've already been around at that time.

If you don't own one and have not been a gamer since that time, chances might be that you "only" have a modern TV set, 40" LCD or something like that. The N64 version would look terrible on that screen. The 3DS version would be the better choice then, imo.

All in all it's a good thing to see a new version of that classic...it makes more sense than HD remakes of MGS (well, MGS 1 would be ok I guess), as far as I am concerned.
