it's like buying a sandwich with everything in it and then have the sandwich seller try to charge you extra when you try to eat one of the olives.

Luckily I don't like olives.
Isn't it more like buying a sandwich you're totally happy with for the price you paid then deciding that half way through the sandwich you purchased that you are totally happy with that actually you'd like a little bit more tomato in it?

So if you want more you can pay a little bit more and you get some tomato. Complaining that there wasnt more tomato in there in the first place despite the fact you thought the sandwich was worth the money in the first place is nobodies problem but yours.

Ubisoft confirms online pass

Car manufacturers still have a revenue stream on spare parts. No other commercial good is so widely traded 2nd hand as games, almost everysingle shop that sells them new also sells 2nd hand. This isn't like a little 2nd had book or music shop. Retail are now making upto 35% of their profit for second hand sales...which is tax free, as they already paid tax on the new sales. I can understand why publishers are pissed off when shops offer pre-order 2nd hand games before a game has been released.

I don't see these £10 DL as ripping off gamers but to get a share of the money that shops get. If anything it should drive down the cost of 2nd hand games, when you can at least choose if you want the extras.

Game killing the Golden goose.

The reason that EA's pass came out was to recoup some money money from second hand sales which everysingle retailer is now doing. The more agressive retail get on 2nd hand expect the more likely you are to see everysingle publisher copying EA's model.

It's not about screwing us end consumers it's about taking some of the money that retail are getting.

Eurogamer Asks: Are second-hand games killing the industry?

Notallowedhere

2nd hand games have never been a problem for publishers. The fact that retail take all the profit is the problem. A single game might be sold 4 times over which the publisher only sees the money once on the first sale, every sale after all the profit (and no tax) goes to the retailer. The retailer not only gets profit 4 times over but they also have no need to purchase 'new' copies of the game...

If you buy a 2nd hand car you still are going to have to purchase new wheels, break pads running replacements... there is a revenue stream for the likes of the car gaints. For games there is nothing.

We're not talking about record shops selling 2nd hand record or small bookshops selling on books, supermarkets are doing this. For every game sold on I can't think of another item where every single highstreet shop selling something new has 2nd hand versions alongside them, it doesn't happen, games are unique in that respect

Unless retail and publishers can work something out expect to see more 'project £10' starting up for all publisher as they try to share some of the revenue with retail. You should see the price of 2nd games decreasing becuase of this.

The end consumer will not lose out, the 2nd hand battle is between retail and publishing.

Where does my money go?

Notallowedhere

Those asking how discounted games work. Publisher and Retailer have a contract that normally stipulates details of discounting returns and writes downs specific to the number of units that the shops have on the shelves & in the warehouses at a specific time.

Esentially the publisher gives money back to the retailer where it can ofset decrease in price and loss of margin. Depending on contract with dev team the royalties are fixed or flexible % of the original selling point. Realistically the publisher takes most of the hit and thats bad news for Devs who will be less likely to sell on new games to publishers if previous games have been unpopular.

Artists of Convenience

Notallowedhere

Seems like the writer has identified the same problems that publishers have struggled with for years…

Publishers would love to have development talent available to push and promote titles in the same way that actors and directors promote their films, it would be 90% of the job done. It would be easy, there would be no need for the 100’s of publishing staff needed to launch a game, has most of the hard work would have been done promoting the game by the dev talent.

However, the issue is not that there is some evil publisher conspiracy not to push Dev talent or a lack of talented developers willing to talk about their abilities and their project, but because the wider public & wider media struggle to relate a developers skills and talent with what is seen on screen.

Dev jobs are incredibly complicated and if readers of sites like Eurogamer still don’t understand the nuances of development then what hope does a producer on BBC breakfast or a viewer of Daybreak? To jo public promoting a game with some of the dev team is like promoting a Harry Potter film by taking the key grip and best boy on a media junket, or a Toy Story film with the lead artist & programmer doing the promotional tour rather than Tom Hanks and Tim Allen.

Disney discouraging used Tron sales

Notallowedhere

All these 'project $10' are nothing to do with stopping 2nd hand sales or trade ins, but about publishers and developers taking a share of some of the massive profits that retail are making on 2nd hand sales. Games are just about the only sub £000's product I can think of that the largest retailers in the country selling 2nd hand side by side to brand new copies.

If you're paying £30 for a a boxed game and the locked out features content (making the complete game) whats the problem if £20 goes to a retailer and £10 goes to a publisher rather than £30 straight onto the pockets of retailers?

MVC3: Capcom defends DLC chars

Notallowedhere

I'm off to the Coke forums to complain that there were only 6 cans of coke in my 6 pack when they quite easily could have put 10 in there but held them back to sell separately, takes the piss etc...

Only got one car that I paid for despite the fact that BMW were making other cars at the factory at the same time. Takes the piss etc...

I bought a set of knives and forks clearly labelled knives and forks, but there were no spoons in the set, takes the piss etc...

Ridiculous examples aren't they but are games any different? It's quite simple if you don't think a packaged fighting game with 40 characters is worth £40, then don't buy it. Moaning that extra bits aren't included is no less stupid than the above examples.

Bizarre Creations in trouble?

Sad news for all involved. I loved MSR on the Dreamcast. Hopefully everyone will be sorted out up there.

However in this day and age where costs are so high, is the current development process of 200 employees sitting in an owned building working on projects still relevent & cost effective? Are we entering about to see a Movie style development process where specialists are brought in freelance to create a game then move onto another one once their project is finished?

Activision plans pay-to-view game movies

Notallowedhere

I'm not sure if it's because he has history but i didn't think it was such an outlandish or 'evil' statement.

What i took from the comments is that there is a massive untapped potential for creating game themed movies in house using all the same tech that they use to create a game, and selling and distributing them to a fanbase directly. Providing this is extra content ontop of the game that people have the choice to buy, if they want, i really don't see the problem.

Resident Evil and Final Fantasy CG films did decent/Ok business, and might have made more money for Capcom and Square if they were created in house and distributed through a modern medium rather than the traditional theatre and home releases (that wasn't available at the time).
