Capcom confirms Resident Evil 5

"We are going to do a Resident Evil 5, of course," producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi says in an interview with a US gaming mag.

In news that ranks as "bleeding obvious" - rather appropriately given the subject matter - Capcom producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi has confirmed that the company will make Resident Evil 5.

"We are going to do a Resident Evil 5, of course, but as for exactly what it will be like... that's something we're busy thinking about right now," he said in an interview with US magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly.

"[The fourth game] is the start of a new storyline. In other words, when you think of it that way, then it's safe to say that RE5 will naturally proceed from where RE4 left off."

There's no word on platform or game specifics, naturally, but Kobayashi-san's comments suggest that key elements like the third-person over-the-shoulder approach may be retained.

Capcom's most recent Resident Evil titles have appeared exclusively on GameCube, with the exception of the spin-off, online-enabled Outbreak series, although the franchise is expected to become properly multiplatform again with its next iteration after Capcom revealed that it would port the fourth instalment to PlayStation 2.

Resident Evil 4 is due out on GameCube in Europe next Friday, 18th March, distributed by Nintendo, and should appear on PS2 either later this year or early next.
