Half-Life 2 DVD-only in the UK?

That's the rumour.

Half-Life 2 will be released on DVD only in the UK, according to a report carried by prominent fan site HalfLife2.net this week, although there's no word on the rest of Europe.

The game is due out in the States as a six-CD version along with a more fully rounded DVD version featuring more extras. It's also due out in various packages via Valve's content delivery system Steam. You can find more details on the various retail and online packages here.

If true, going DVD-only for Half-Life 2 would seem like an odd move for publisher Vivendi-Universal Games, but a sensible progression overall - Far Cry did pretty well on DVD over here, while Unreal Tournament 2004 was released on CD and DVD earlier this year.

However, our own sources in UK retail this morning were unable to confirm the report, having heard nothing from the publisher on the subject - this despite their being told last week that Half-Life 2 would launch in Europe on November 26th.

As soon as we hear more, we'll let you know.
