Modems go faster

The analogue modem might seem like ancient history with the advent of ADSL and cable modems, but Elsa has announced that it will be releasing a new range of v.92 ready modems as early as this autumn. Owners of older Elsa modems will apparently be able to trade in for one of the new models. Full details can be found in the press release.

So what's so hot about v.92? Well, it halves the time it takes for your computer to connect to your ISP, adds support for "call waiting" features, and increases the maximum theoretical upload speed of your modem from 33.6kbps to 48kbps. If you live in an area where fast digital connections like cable modems and ADSL are unavailable or over-priced, v.92 might just give your old analogue connection an extra lease of life while you wait for the broadband revolution.
