Metal Gear Solid film director shares new art to celebrate series' 31st anniversary

31 pieces coming over the next 31 days.

July 13th 2018 marks the 31st anniversary of Metal Gear's arrival on the MSX2, and Jordan Vogt-Roberts, director of the upcoming Metal Gear Solid movie, is celebrating the occasion by releasing 31 pieces of new art inspired by Hideo Kojima's beloved stealth-action series.

A Metal Gear film was first announced by Kojima all the way back in 2006, but that project eventually stalled. A second attempt to kickstart a film adaptation was unveiled in 2012, and has been quietly ticking away ever since - and although there's been little public evidence of progress on the movie, Vogt-Roberts (who directed 2017's Kong: Skull Island) did reveal last year that Kojima is assisting in the game's script, despite his split with Konami in 2015.

Vogt-Roberts has repeatedly confessed to being a massive fan of Metal Gear, and, promisingly, continues to demonstrate a keen understanding of Kojima's beloved series - which was once again evident in his Tweets celebrating today's 31st anniversary.

Marking the occasion with a nifty little video in the style of a classic Metal Gear Codec message (see above), Vogt-Roberts announced that he would be releasing a new piece of art inspired by the series - and created alongside numerous 'next-gen artists' - every day for the next 31 days. However, the video does add the caveat that this should be considered "fan art" and "is not meant to represent what is or not in the forthcoming film".

Created by Nick Foreman.

Day 1 kicks off the birthday celebrations with a striking piece from artist Nick Foreman, which you can see above. "The bond we formed via mechs reinforced that we should be loud w/ our love of this franchise as we may find friends & collaborators in the process", notes Vogt-Roberts. And if you like that, keep an eye on Twitter, as there'll be plenty more to come.
