Microsoft's new Surface for Windows RT tablet will indeed launch on Friday, 26th October - the same day as Windows 8.

That's what we'd expected; that's what Microsoft had said back in June. But the Windows-maker had gone quiet of late.

"The next version of our operating system, Windows 8, will be generally available on October 26, 2012. At that time, we will begin selling the Surface, a series of Microsoft-designed and manufactured hardware devices," Microsoft reaffirmed in an SEC filing spotted by CNET.

The more powerful Surface for Windows Pro tablet is expected 90 days later.

Microsoft announced its Surface tablets in June. Digital Foundry dived in to analyse them, with a pike and a tuck and a splash-less entry.

Eurogamer also asked a handful of game developers what they thought about Microsoft's new Surface tablets.
