Super Mario celebrates 25th birthday

Miyamoto gives him the bumps.

Nintendo mascot Mario is celebrating his birthday.

Or rather, Nintendo is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Super Mario franchise with a series of promotional activities and press releases. Like this one, which informs us that Mario "traverses languages, ages and cultural barriers".

Super Mario Bros. was released for the NES in 1985. More than 240 million games featuring Mario's moustachioed face have now been sold.

"Stimulated by advancements in technologies, we have always enjoyed creating the Super Mario Bros. games," said Mario's dad, Shigeru Miyamoto.

"The series has always taken advantage of the latest technological advancements and is the fruit of creativity of many of my hard-working friends working closely as a team."

Apparently the Metro newspaper carries an advert that reads: "Join in the Super Mario Bros. 25th anniversary celebration at 20:45 on ITV1 during Coronation Street." (thanks kris)
