Are turn-based strategy games dead ?

Are turn-based strategy games dead? So asks GameSpot today. Ever since the earliest PC game, text based RPG's we have had a lot of turn based games on the PC. Indeed they were the life blood of PC gaming for some time. Civilization two and three sold a huge amount of copies and kept the turn based genre alive for some time.

In latter years turn based games were at least as popular as RTS games like warcraft and Age of Empires. While there has been some great turn based games in the last few years, none of them have sold even close to Starcraft or Command & Conquer.

Like them or not, the article asks a lot of questions about where the games industry is going, and is therefore worth checking out.
