You are my last ray of hope.

I have been trying to get a game on Halo 3 but my NAT Settings are strict. I called Microsoft who gave me some codes and told me I would have to contact Talk-Talk (My provider) give them the codes and they would unlock the ports in the modem. Simple right? Nope

I call Talk-Talk and get through to someone who can hardly understand me. I tell him the situation and he tells me that nothing will be locked in the modem and it's not there problem it's Microsofts.

Where the fuck does that leave me? Anyone had this situation, been with Talk-Talk and got it fixed. If it helps my modem is a "Smartax"

Help please!

My NAT settings have been all over the place today too. I did the diagnostic three times in a row on the 360 and it came up strict. Then, seonds later it was coming up as open again (which it always has been), and did so for the entire afternoon. Sorted I thought.

As I was coming off the 360 earlier on though I did one last check and it came up as strict again!

I've been on Major Nelson and there are a few people complaining of the same thing so I'm assuming it's one of the myriad of issues the service has been having over the last few days. I know in the past that problems with Xbox Live have caused NAT issues for some people so I'm hoping it's as simple as that. I'll check it again later.

I'm pretty certain it's nothing to do with me. I've never had any NAT issues before and my setup is unchanged.

Has anyone else done their 'Test Xbox Live Connection' diagnostic today? Check it and post any issues here.

I'm just wondering how widespread the issue is.

Nat settings are dictated by your router. So you need to forward some ports in there. Also, make sure UPnP is enabled. If you don't know how to config your router, then I reckon Google is your friend there.

What make is your router?

Find your router here… and it will tell you how to you config it for use with XBox Live. :)

With my router if I enable UPnP it fails. Go figure.

Actually I liked a new one.

Folks, list me some good routers.

I've looked into it and as I say I can't see any issue on my end. If it were just me I'd assume you were right, but I've read a few people complaining of the same issue - surely it's more than a coincidence, especially as Xbox Live has been having issues over the last few days.

It also would explain why the settings have been so changeable. One minute it would be strict and the next it would be open.

I'll admit though, I don't know all that much about configuring routers and such. I've never needed to look into it : )

If i was you, i would just put the IP address of the 360 into the DMZ setting of you're router. It's then outside of it's protection, but XBL is a closed system and thus more secure than 'tinternet

I remember after the last seesion of mainatanence on Xbox Live, there were NAT issues for some people.

Is it at least possible that it's something like that?

Sounds to me like the OP just has a USB modem, and is - I guess - using ICS for the 360.

Solution - get a modem/router, turn on UPnP, put the 360 in the DMZ if necessary.

Don't mix settings up on the router ie. don't enable uPnP and forward the ports (and stick it in a DMZ if you like). Just use one or the other or you'll get some freaky shit behaviour!
It's what my BT Home Hub does to me *slaps the stupid white thing*

That's the linky I would post if I posted a link, also useful for port forwarding if you are using TVersity or something

For good routers, avoid D-Link as they've gone downhill, Netgear are pretty good, Belkin better but more expensive.

As has already been mentioned, NAT is to do with ports, which if it's not the modem is your firewall causing the issue. morriss' link is the most helpful site EVER.

AFAIK MS recommends simply buying a new router! Which is exactly what I did when I found my strict NAT setting was leading to problems on Live. I somehow contrived to buy a router that has a moderate NAT problem (I thought I was getting an MS recommended one, but it turned out to be a very similar model with a different firmware).

Having said that, I've read that certain ISPs enable settings that lead to NAT problems. Perhaps MS was right and it's not your router after all...

Thumbs down for D-Link from me too.
