I just wish it would retain my library properly. Cracking app otherwise, but routinely loses a few thousand songs for no reason at all

Mine are all .m4a files, and they play fine. I'm using Poweramp however - the stock player might not support the format. But that's the beauty of Android, you have plenty of other options.

Incidentally Poweramp is great, the best of all the music players I've tried (all of which had some issue or other that put me off). It's not quite as slick and stable as the iPhone's music player, granted, but it reads and plays all of my collection fine. No issues with tags either (from an iTunes music library).

Thank you chaps. Kay how have you found the camera ? Have you had the same issues as nick ?
Not used the camera much, so can't comment in detail, but from what I've used it's speedy and takes great shots - but coming from an old iPhone, of course it would be an improvement. :)

One thing I hate though (as always) - no physical camera shutter button, which the iPhone now has.

There's a setting to have the volume down key as a camera button.

Really? Even without rooting or messing around with the phone?

I doubt it. You cant even turn the shutter noise off.

(again, i stand to be corrected)

Mine does, but I use a Note. If not several free Camera applications support it, most notably "Camera ICS"

Yeah you need to root to do the camera button hack. I'm pretty sure you can turn off the shutter sound without rooting though.
  • Deleted user 18 December 2012 15:32:46
    Not rooting is madness frankly.

These days I find very little reason to root. I used to hear about loads of things that required it but not so much now. I tried it a while back on my old HTC desire and managed to get code scroll down the screen followed by failure messages and bricking myself at the thought of bricking the phone.

There's nothing that actually requires root to make the phone do what it does as a handset. However you're really limiting the actual capabilities of the device by not doing it.

Like what? I havent done mine yet and unless it allows you to dramatically reduce battery usage I cant really think of anything I would need over and above what Im using it for.

(although never having rooted, I certainly dont know what im missing..)

Yeah battery life on most of the custom firmwares is improved to a massive degree. I'm using UltimaROM. It's the nicest one I've used yet and has quite a few handy built in features.

I'm not gonna list why rooting your phone is awesome, there's loads of sites for that but yeah battery life and removing the bloatware on the handsets are two big things for normals.

That's not true, you can download Camera ICS and use it volume button without root.

Ah right I thought we were on about getting the phone to do it itself. Yeah there's myriad replacement camera apps.

@nickthegun Next time you're on IRC I'll sort you out with some links etc if you don't sort it yourself first.

If I can manage it nick, sure you'll be fine. Really need to stick another ROM on my S2, the Cyanogen nightly I'm using is a bit too unstable for my liking.

Ive rooted my note2 because I have a lot of cloud backups of app settings and savegames that I keep adding to and like to sync across devices.

Until google gets its thumb out of its ass and introduces some kind of game centre cloud save hub thingy whatsit ill keep rooting just for this.

I also like to tweak the UI slightly and wanted to remove some samsung bloatware

Haven't rooted my note 10. 1 mainly because want to see it being stable for a couple of months.

Sort of inevitable though since no idea when there'll be a jelly bean update for Thailand, though not sure how well custom firmwares will work with the pen.

    T-Mobile UK are officially hopeless.

I still cannot believe they haven't released Jellybean v4.1.1 for my S3 yet so my phone is stuck on ICS v4.0.4 when Google are rolling out 4.2.1. I'm getting sick of waiting for it. And T-Mobile have atrocious customer support too, either taking months to reply to emails or not at all. I'm only four months into a 2-year contract with them so rooting isn't an option I'm afraid. I will certainly not be renewing my contract with them once this current one finishes.

I ended up updating my S3 manually using Odin3 to Jellybean v4.1.2 (the official UK Samsung ROM was released last week) and so far everything seems great and I didn't lose anything in the upgrade. Even Flash still works. There's more free RAM (832 MB vs. 780 MB previously), apps open quicker, scrolling is smoother and Google Now is terrific. Beyond that there aren't many other noticeable improvements (there's an extra shortcut on the Lock screen though) but then Android ICS v4.0.4 was running great before on my S3 anyway.

If you don't have one yet, my dad was told by an O2 salesperson that apparently the siii will be reduced in price after Xmas.

Nice one. I'm still deciding between this and the HTC one x (I think it is called.
