Xbox Live autumn update on Tuesday

Welcome Facebook, Twitter, Last.fm.

The Xbox Live autumn update will be released on Tuesday, 17th November, confirming an earlier leak.

Marc Whitten, Xbox Live general manager, revealed the news on Fast Company (via Kotaku).

The autumn update brings Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm to Xbox 360 in special, console-tailored form.

Expect Xbox Live downtime next Tuesday as Johnny Minkley's backlog of Tweets are loaded.

Any news on the 1080p movie streaming?
  • Vroom #2 2 years ago

Nothing to so with the ps3 facebook update no doubt. ;)

    @ stevethemeat

Been "stress testing"the streaming servers as part of the preview...streamed State of Play in 1080p and it worked like a dream on my piss-poor 5MB wireless-G connection. So hopefully if it is released on Tuesday, you wont need shit hot setup & connection to enjoy!

Downtime? Are you sure? Last time EG announced a non announced Live downtime, it never really happened.
  • insincere_dave #5 2 years ago

Agreed. They would have launched the update before MW2 if there was going to be significant downtime.

Last.fm is all well and good but as for Facebook and Twitter, who cares? Why can't MS get their arse in gear and give us something useful like an Xbox web browser?

I don't want any of the Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm crap on my 360, but will I be given the option to decline the update? Will I bollocks.

^^ You don't have to use them

    /shrugs
  • WinterSnowblind #9 2 years ago

You don't need to install Twitter/Facebook/Last.fm they're optional downloads.

    @Vroom!
Or the PS3 announcement is because the 360 is getting it..? Those of us in the preview programme have had access to these Apps for weeks now, we've known this update will be coming soon for a very long time.
  • TheRankinator #10 2 years ago

Indeed but I haven't really used any of the services beyond 30 minutes
  • Eldritch #11 2 years ago

I'm with Spong, f**k Twitter and f**k Facebook.
  • MARKIV #12 2 years ago

I want something really worth while, this and the Sky Player are all stuff I'll never use on the 360..! All the ideas they're coming up with recently would be great if PC's / Laptops didn't exist, but sadly they do.

Where's the free Joyride game for Gold members too?
  • man-of-steel #13 2 years ago

Too bad my xbox is rodded
  • asphaltcowboy #14 2 years ago

last.fm is well implemented (even if you can't listen to music whilst playing games -- please sort this out MS!), but Twitter and Facebook are completely pointless. I would actually use them both if you could do status updates/tweets directly from the dashboard, but if I have to load up a specific app to access all this stuff, it becomes completely redundant!
  • Diabeu #15 2 years ago

    twitter what? facebook who?
  • Jonathan_Fakenham #16 2 years ago

Any dashboard tweaks in this fall update at all? Or is it just all social networking junk.

Oh right. I seem to remember something about music game DLC getting its own separate section.

I can see Last.fm being nice - especially if you could use it while in game, which you probably can't? But twitter and Facebook has limited use since they are really mediums which requires a regular browser to be really useful - how else are you suppose to be watching videoes and other fun links etc.?
Also I can only imagine you would have to have a chatpad to be able to use it without going crazy!

@#18 - Last.fm can't be used in game, this is commen knowledge by now. Who knows though maybe they can update that in the future?

I've been in the preview. Used Last.fm a couple of times but haven't touched Twiiter or Facebook since the first day I downloaded them and had a quick look. Just totally pointless the way they have been implemented, if you could bring them up in the guide while gaming and post updates and such then maybe they'd be ok (though to be honest I'm not a huge fan of either on pc anyway).

#19 Oh I didn't know, well that severely limits its use then - it's not like I'm gonna have my Xbox on just to use last.fm, it uses far to much power for that compared to a netbook or similar.
  • Vroom #20 2 years ago

@wintersnowblind. I'm in the beta too. I was just trying to stir up some mess.

I tweet but I really don't see the point of it (or facebook) for that matter on the telly. But it's nice to have the option.
  • peterfll #21 2 years ago

    Facebook possibly. But Twitter Schmitter.
  • SniperZoz #22 2 years ago

Facebook & Twitter ... yeah ok ... i might not use them much ... but i see why they'de want them on the 360 .... what I can't understand is why something like facebook and twitter would beat YouTube to the xbox dashboard !!!??? MS are you listening!?

    Whislt you're at it ... B R O W S E R !!! C'mon!
  • metalangel #23 2 years ago

Fuck Twitter. For smug, self-loving twats who really think that anyone else really gives a fuck what they're doing every hour of the day. Especially to people who act all offended if you DON'T have Twitter to follow their pointless lives and thus have to suffer the old-fashioned hassle of, you know, talking to you about what they've been doing? Did we lose a war? Do we live in caves? Face to face interaction?

Facebook can fuck off as well. Especially as my team leader is on my friends list (you don't know what she's like, she nagged me constantly until I added her) so I'm now stuck - suppose I'm off sick, decide to play some Peggle to cheer myself up and have my Xbox updating my Facebook that I'm playing games! Oh, so you're too sick to work but not too sick to play games, eh?

    @metalangel

That first paragraph seriously made me laugh.

"Oh, so you're too sick to work but not too sick to play games, eh?"

She kinda has a point there... o.O
  • Nostrus #25 2 years ago

Playing games is nowhere near as intensive as working (well that's the case for me anyway) and I can easily prop myself up in bed and play games when I'm in no fit condition to be at work. Having a strong cold would be one example.
  • GamerG #26 2 years ago

@metalangel cant you just change your fb security settings so your team leader cant see shit? she's probably only worried about how many friends she has
  • GamerG #27 2 years ago

I have the update and the FB and twitter stuff is pretty worthless except for being able to show your or your friends facebook photo albums on the big screen at parties etc

Last fm is pretty awesome though for parties or if you wantto chill out and read a book
  • Darren #28 2 years ago

Well it's a good job I've never used and have no use for any of those then because I'm a hated Silver user that doesn't subsidise Microsoft every year any more! :D
  • bdaggers #29 2 years ago

    See You Next Tuesday then.
  • mkreku #30 2 years ago

Last.fm might be good and all.. except that it's only going to be available in the US and the UK. The rest of Europe are excluded.
  • Darren #31 2 years ago

Until Microsoft started throwing the words Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm around in relation to their upcoming update, I'd never heard of any of them! I can guess what Last.fm does (radio thing) but I haven't a clue what the other two are for!

Ah... the joys of being ignorant; that way you don't miss something you can't have. :)
  • Stiggy #32 2 years ago

To all the concerns, the FB app is optional and it doesn't report on what you are playing etc. It runs on its own so you have to exit out to get back to the dash.
  • spenner #33 2 years ago

Does anyone know if this facebook thing will integrate my xbox using facebook friends into my xbox friends list?
  • phoopipe #34 2 years ago

    @spenner,Yes.

As everyone keeps saying Facebook is a bit naff on xbox but last fm is a nice tool for people like me who dont have any decent sound coming from the pc/laptop.

And remember kids its not forced on to you, each app is a seperate download...if you dont want it dont download it you shower of moaning cock's ;)
  • telboy007 #35 2 years ago

So I imagine these three apps will work exactly the same way as waypoint does? Optional download, launch from games library and away you go?
  • Darrengamer #36 2 years ago

I don't know what Bookface and Twatter are because I live in a hole with my sooooper compooter! Who wants to associate with other people anyway?!
  • Bravestinsane #37 2 years ago

This is a pointless update for me, my xbox and pc are both connected to my monitor so i can play full HD, i can flick back to that a lot quicker than loading it up and having limited functionality on a console.

On top of that one of my mates got the update early and said you can't use LastFM while playing games so meh...
  • oupe #38 2 years ago

last.fm also it teh suck because you have to pay for it outside UK, US and Germany.
