World of Goo announced for iPhone

2D Boy bridges platforms.

2D Boy has confirmed an iPhone and iPod Touch adaptation of brilliant puzzle game World of Goo.

"It's not done and we don't have a release date yet," said 2D Boy on its blog (via Pocket Gamer).

"We have it running well on the iPhone 3GS, and with a little luck we hope to get it running smoothly on the 3G as well. Hopefully more news on this soon."

World of Goo built mountains of acclaim when launched on PC and WiiWare last December. The game involves using blobs of goo to make bridge structures to reach a pipe, with points awarded for blobs left unused. This is easy at first, but becomes brilliantly bonkers as obstacles begin to litter one's path.

Our World of Goo review has all the detail and depth.

Fantastic. There's a couple of games that are in the same mould on the platform already - namely the rather wonderful game called Moonlights (lite version here) and the simian themed Tiki Towers (again, there's a lite version) - but Goo is just a wonderful game with lovely sound and art direction coupled to a brilliant mechanic.

    Top stuff!

this game alone makes it worth having an iphone! too bad i'm so out of touch with the rest of society, still holding on to my old ericsson. one day...
  • Kay #3 2 years ago

After playing Tiki Towers I was wondering why World of Goo wasn't already on the iPhone. Still haven't picked the game up for any other platform so this is good news.

    Android version?! Plz
  • Flying_Pig #6 2 years ago

Loved World of Goo on WiiWare, so this is great news.

Thanks for the heads up of a few similar games to check out Pac-man AMW.

@Nova5lag: Do correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm not sure any Android phones have multi-touch screens like the iPhone. Having this ability will be the same as using two Wii controllers to place two Goo balls at the same time. Handy when building stable towers.

Android may becomes as popular as iPhone, and would be good but at this time I think Apple iPhone still have the upper hand.

Aye thought the same after playing Tiki Towers about World of Goo!

Bought this on PC, and it was good. Bought this on Wii, and it was great. Fingers crossed that iPhone version will be even better.
  • videogangs #13 2 years ago

Mmm... I sold my Wii at the weekend (finally had enough) which had World of Goo on it, I may have to buy my 3GS a present... yes I think it'd like that :-P
  • UberFrog #14 2 years ago

I found World of Goo way too short - great game though

Great game, so it's good to have on the iPhone. (Too bad a DSi version will probably never make it.)

    Now if they'd release a level editor, I'd pay €15 again. :)
  • darleysam #17 2 years ago

It's also available for as little or much as you're willing to pay here, from the developers themselves, in celebration of its birthday. Although the site appears to be down at the moment.

The Hero has multi touch. I think all HTC Android phones have multi touch hardware but it is disabled in the OS. Don't really know why.

Maybe he bought the wrong phone for games, but as a telephone Android is already ahead of the iPhone in many features and abilities.

Okay, let's not all get into a cock-waving-who's-phone-is-better-than-whose contest.

It's been announced for iPhone which is officially a Good Thing™.

    Let us rejoice.
  • skillian #20 2 years ago

    How about a phone-waving-whose-cock-is-better-than-whose contest?

edit: also, darleysam's post rocks and deserves a news story all of its own.

No not the wrong phone at all.. I got the HTC Touch Hero and so far it is a shining becon against Apples almost God-like influence.

I really like the phone and the Google App store is pretty good but just needs a little kick.

Is the HTC touch a multi touch phone I think it must be because it does the whole pinch zoom thing?
  • skillian #22 2 years ago

I think the Touch is another name for the Hero, in which case yes, it is multi-touch.

And multi-touch is expected to be officially unlocked in all Android phones with the 2.0 'Eclair' update, coming before the end of this year.
  • Nova5lag #23 2 years ago

Yeah I have the Hero so far pretty damn good. I read a comparative review of the Hero vs the 3GS and the Hero came out on top so that was me sold. :)
  • skillian #24 2 years ago

Yeah, my brother is picking up his Hero today.

I'm waiting on the Motorola Sholes to be released as I'd like the physical keyboard. Would come in very handy if I download any of the the SNES/Megadrive emulators.
  • Wyrm #25 2 years ago

Perfect type of game for the platform. Definite purchase.
  • steve242526 #26 2 years ago

To be honest, I traded my Wii at Gamestation and used the credit to get an 8GB iPod Touch. And was worth every single penny ! I've had more enjoyment with that than I ever did with the Wii !
  • shotgun44 #27 2 years ago

Come on Orange, get the iPhone out, I'm due an upgrade in a month or so!
  • poopmonster #28 2 years ago

    Should have gone to SpecSavers.

Should be interesting. Apple holds a ton of patents covering multitouch which is the reason why google didn't include multitouch support before and left it down to the hardware manufacturers to implement themselves. Depending on how they do this Apple may sue for a license fee (likely, and possibly already negotiated) or sue to have the feature removed (unlikely).

"Apple holds a ton of patents covering multitouch"

Most of Apple's multitouch patents are actually really specific, such as to do with intertia, or going 'past' content ends and having the screen 'snap' back once you do so. These things make the entire feel of OS X for iPhone more tactile and usable than a lot of competing devices (apart from those who've copied this and risk a court battle), but other manufacturers can put multitouch gestures within their OS with no major fear of reprisals.

The real clout Apple has is simply the astonishing number of apps available for the platform. And while some rivals are crowing about 'quality over quantity', Apple's handhelds have both, whereas most rivals have neither.
