Wii Sports Resort sells half a million

US copies disappearing every second.

Nintendo has announced that Wii Sports Resort has been bought over 500,000 times across the US.

That figure, the publisher and platform holder added, was reached after just eight days on sale (WSR launched on 26th July, and data was collected on 3rd August).

"Through Monday we sold one copy of Wii Sports Resort roughly every 1.5 seconds continuously since it launched in the United States," said Cammie Dunaway, one of Nintendo of America's top movers and wagglers. "This tells us consumers were eagerly waiting to get their hands on these fun activities, and it's a great start for a game that will have long-lasting appeal."

Since European launch on 24th July, Wii Sports Resort has remained atop the UK All-Formats chart.

    Funny, it was just a few days ago that people here were saying that the Wii was dead. It was on the Wii sales figures slowing article, people were claiming that Wii owners had seen the error of their ways and weren't about to be tricked into buying Wii Sports 2 as they'd only playd Wii Sports 1 briefly until the novelty wore off. These sales are even more impressive when you consider that you have to spend an extra 20 quid to get the full experience.

    The anti-Wii sentiment around here is a littl sad given how many smart people there are here compared to your average games forum. Gaming should be fun. There's nothing mutually exclusive about the simple social gaming and "hardcore" gaming. Just because I enjoy challenging independent movies doesn't mean I can't also enjoy stupid comedies or dumb blockbusters. The snobbishness seems especially foolish given how little the vast majority of games, "casual" or "hardcore" have to say anyway.

    Seems fair enough - its been the first game I've enjoyed on the Wii since HOTD Overkill... (although hardly in the same category, granted).

    Surely with this level of uptake we're now going to see more developers incorporate WMP into future titles ?

    I'm still hoping that No More Heroes 2 will.

    It's terrific, brainless fun. A welcome break from the likes of Dead Space and Chrono Trigger, which are laying the heavies on me right now.

    Don't go claiming pwns just yet homerbert.

    There's some 50 million Wii's out there so a sequel to the Wii's biggest title, during a games drought, with a decent improvement to the controls, is going to sell pretty quick regardless.

    Wii hardware sales have dropped and Wii software sales have dropped even with more Wii's in homes - FACT. THAT is what us 'snobs' were discussing. Nothing about Wii Sports 2.

    Finally, as I've mentioned myself before, the motion plus seems to be a pretty fucking good bit of kit (the Wii finally does what we thought it would etc etc). Don't you think that maybe the hardcore finally feel they have something that would give them some use from their Wiis?

    To put it another way...I know a hell of a lot of Wii owners - it's hard not to ;) - of all the non-gamers that own them, not a single MP has been bought yet. The TWO friends that did buy them immediately are not casual gamers...one owns a 360 and the other owns a PS3.

    They think Wii Sports resort is great by the way and I'm looking forward to some table tennis with a controller that does what I need it to do. :)

    Also, it resulted in a huge hardware sales jump everywhere, even for multiple weeks.

    I think this might even be sustained until NSMB and WiiFit+ are released.

    Did we expect anything else really? It was always going to be like this. And tbh, it deserves it. Awesome game. I've pumped hours into it and still loving every second of it. The table tennis a clear highlight.

    I dont "get" these "hardcore"/"casual" arguments.

    I can beat a 10/10 "hardcore" game in a few nights and not go back to it. This will STILL be getting bought out when i have friends around years from now.

    What's the better quality for money?
  • skillian #10 3 years ago

    Well it sounds like the Wii game is better value for you, though that clearly doesn't apply to anyone else. I don't see what that has to do with hardcore or casual though.
  • Teamallstar #11 3 years ago

    millions of people buying a game they will play once and then put down to collect dust whilst they go back to watching reality TV.
  • siro #12 3 years ago

    skillian: To 'anyone else'? You surely meant everyone else, because at least for me, smelly's argument holds up.

    @homerbert

    I really fail to see your point. This really hasn't sold that well. That's about 1% of all Wii owners. Halo 3 was bought by 33% of all 360 owners, with 2.7 million people playing on Live within the first week (probably >3 million in sales once non-Live users are counted). GTA IV sold 3.6 million units on it's first day. It sold more than 7 times as many copies in one day as Wii Sports Resort managed in 8 days. Whilst I don't doubt its potential staying power, there is nothing at all impressive about those figures. In fact, Smash Bros. Brawl, a Wii exclusive, shifted over 3 times more (1.6m) in its first week on sale in the US.

    Try asking a WoW or CoD4 addict the same question.

    @smelly:

    It's not only the amount of hours you put into a game that define it's value for money. Sure, I'll spend a lot more time with EA Sports Active than say Dead Space.

    But I'm the kind of gamer who wants to FEEL something - be it fear, excitement, the joy of a new upgrade to my characters weapons/armor. I just don't get that with these minigame collections. Sure, Wii Sports Resort is great fun at a gathering of friends but does it give me similar experiences that "hardcore" games such as Dead Space or Mirror's Edge do? Nope.

    And by the way, with the current price levels, you can buy new hardcore games for about £20 online, at least if you wait a couple of months after release. Nintendo titles on the other hand seem to keep their high price level for a lot longer time.

    You're dead right... In that it's fun, doesnt rely on story to make up for linear gameplay, and isnt the sort of thing i can complete in one sitting never to play again.

    God forbid a game should be.. you know FUN!!!!
  • smelly #17 3 years ago

    @Zomoniac : Hmmm.. yeah.. there must be somethign about shit overrated games selling well.
  • BabyJesus #18 3 years ago

    Did anyone really doubt this was going to sell shit loads?
  • Alterego-X #19 3 years ago

    @Zomoniac:
    Don't worry, it will surely outsell Halo 3 and GTA IV on the long term...

    Anyways, while maybe this is not the biggest system-seller of the Wii ever, it is the first one in this year, on ANY console. Just look at the hardware sales (the last third being this year):
    [link url=h ttp://vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=Wii®1=All&cons2=PS3& reg2=All&cons3=X360®3=All&start=39376&end=40027
    ]http://vg chartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=Wi...[/link]
    All three consoles were basically flatlined, and slowly decreasing for the better part of the year, before WSR came and proved that there is still some hope.

    Having played Wii Sports Resort vs. Wii Fit I prefer Wii Fit.

    I am not happy with the table tennis as I usually disguise my backhand before I switch up just like in real table tennis. And it has me hit the ball with a forehand instead of a backhand. Grrrr.

    The other resort games don't impress me much either. Head to head, Wii Fit is better value.
