Warhammer PSP/DS unveiled

Online options and all. Autumn.

THQ has unveiled Warhammer 40,000: Squad Command for Nintendo DS and PSP, a turn-based strategy game due out in the autumn.

You'll get to take up the mantle of those fun-loving Space Marines as you battle the forces of Chaos through 13 cinematically bound missions under the banner of the Ultramarines chapter.

There's also support for "global multiplayer" featuring nine unique missions, and THQ says it will "fully utilise all the portable functionality of the PSP and the Nintendo DS, including the dual-screen and stylus".

"Bringing the Warhammer 40,000 universe to handheld systems creates exciting new game play options for fans across the globe," says THQ's Bob Aniello.

"An all-new single-player storyline and the ability to battle head-to-head with anyone in the world make this an exciting addition to the Warhammer 40,000 library."

Look out for more soon, and in the meantime you can pop over to our Warhammer 40,000: Squad Command PSP screenshot gallery for some, well, guess.

  • Katsumoto #2 5 years ago

yup CHaos Gate, classic! Shame it was a bit shit, I really wanted it to be UFO but in the WH40k universe!

And if this interests you, we also have a Games Workshop competition and a little strategy survey over at http://www.thq-games.com

Hmm, will the DS version look that nice? I loved Chaos Gate, so quite excited about this!

    Boo Ultramarines.

I hope to God THQ don't go mental and milk the hell out of 40K.
  • The_Aardvark #8 5 years ago

That's interesting A0 - I pray to god they do.

I loved ultramarines, they were pretty standard in comparison to dark angels or blood marines maybe, but still cool.

I played as chaos in the end though, so much cooler, they have the marines cool tech and vehicles plus daemons and crazy things like bezerkers.

Yay! Chaos Gate was brilliant! And the PSP has been oddly starved of turn-based strategy games up till now, so this is just great news all around :D

I like playing Killzone Liberation and pretending im an Imperial Guardsman.

:/ Thats not so strange is it? Is it?
  • SpacemanX #12 5 years ago

This is developed by inexperienced ex N-Gage developer. This is not a joke.

I hope this works on DS, I'd love to see multiple turn based 40k games. They can milk this as much as they want. Tyrannids next, please.

Why haven't they fully replicated the 40k table game as a videogame yet?

I mean fully turn based using the exact same rules, customisable scenery and battle layouts, every army and race featuring every unit from their codex, build your own army to a points limit... It'd be immense.

When oh when oh when will there be an RTS for the DS?

I cant stand turn based, and age of empires turned from RTS to turn based in the DS version (not that I ever played the RTS version on PC).

Come on! Its been out about 2 years now (more? less?)!
  • The_Aardvark #18 5 years ago

Isn't FF: Revenant Wings more or less a RTS?
  • Azazel #19 5 years ago

    turn based strategy!!!!11

Yeah also: why the fk does no one ever do anything about the Salamanders? I can't remember ever seeing them in anything! pff....

Hopefully never again. I'm reviewing a DS RTS for another site and I can tell you that the DS is not built for RTS games - There's a reason why all the good PC RTS games use the right and left mouse buttons and the stylus can't adequately replicate that.

Finially! Turn-based may be slower than an RTS but just look at the genius of Advance Wars to see the potential of these kind of games on a hand-held.

Now all we need is a (console) KotOR-esque RPG from the guys at THQ and we'll be set....

they should make a warhammer fps

avance wars one was one of the best strategys of all my gaming time (and I've played my share) but i have to say the 2 sequels don't do the game justice. the balance is fucked and the cute graphics of the original are made really ugly

What game are you reviewing? Reviewing or Previewing? Is it out yet?
Surely there would be ways around the right mouse button thing though - shoulder buttons or something? I think theres a homebrew RTS for the DS, but I dont have any of the kit to run it, and I'd prefer a finished game anyway. I wonder what method they use to get over the problem?

That aside, I think the DS would have been better if BOTH screens had been touch sensitive - very useful for contol panels and mini-maps etc.

Rtrdo, I'm reviewing Ys Strategy on the DS. Like yourself I've been waiting for RTS games to come out on the DS so picked this one up as soon as I saw it. The game is awful in every aspect, bad graphics, bad audio, bad story, bad everything but it was the control system that stuck out most. Its awful, its not user-friendly and its not natural.

Everytime you want to select a unit you've got to deselect the current character by using a button on the menu, being used to deselcting by left-clicking on the screen it comes as a bit of a shock when you accidently send one of your men half way across the map because you wanted to select another unit. This shock quickly becomes annoyance and frustration.

Once you've deselected the character you can't just click on a new one you've got to draw a circle around it. Its an absolute nightmare trying to select one unit in the middle of a melee using this method and its not all that accurate.

Ys strategy is one of those games that has to be played to understand how bad it is.

    Wyrm:
"Why haven't they fully replicated the 40k table game as a videogame yet?"

Because Games Workshop wouldn't like that, it would detract from the table top game, the idea behind making videogames based on warhammer is draw a bigger market towards it.
