Warhammer Online coming to Mac

Beta version now, release in autumn.

Mythic has revealed that it's developing an Apple Mac version of its fantasy MMO, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning.

The Mac version of the game will be released this autumn, but it's already available in a beta version from the Mythic webiste. Existing players can use it with their game accounts, while anyone else is free to try it out with a 10-day trial account.

Once the client is officially released, players using it will receive exclusive in-game titles - "I'm an Order" or "I'm a Destruction" - and an "iPomme" in-game trophy.

Like many PC-to-Mac ports, Mythic is using TransGaming's technology to get WAR up and running on Apple machines. TransGaming was also behind the Mac versions of City of Heroes and EVE Online, which along with World of Warcraft and the imminent WAR, make MMOs a relatively well-represented genre on the platform.

Warhammer Online has recently been updated with the Land of the Dead zone as part of its Call to Arms "live expansion". We'll be giving the game a full re-review soon.

For the rereview I'd wait until the birthday event patches are over apprently we're actally getting the RVR/City fixes we actally need in WAR - it's still far too PVE based for a IP thats just about armies at war.

Good news for MAC players tho at least you get a semi-sorted game now

cool - may have to give this a 10 day try now :)

Class balance issues - check. Dismissed by Mythic because it's a team based game, so the fact that some classes are weak is fine because the other side also has classes that are weak. Genius.
Faction population issues - check. Design a game where two sides fight it out. Fail to build in a mechanism to keep the two sides roughly equal in numbers. Brilliant.
Server popultation issues - check. At one point there were rumours that DAoC had more players than WAR.

Bottom line - you are probably better off trying out Aion. It's a huge grindfest but it has fewer issues and a bigger population.

WAR is not supposed to have class balance. Go play WoW if you want that.

There is one thing about WAR... it has the biggest population of whiners in MMO history. It really is incredible. People do not seem to get the concept of RvR. It is not PvP, it is group based combat. One well organized warband in WAR can prevent almost *any* zone from locking. Class balance? Fuck that... leave that to other games.

Anyway... come and play on Eltharion. The best RvR server in Europe. Huge daily battles and more or less evenly matched sides. WAR has been evolving in a good way, the only thing I have issues with is the poor performing 3D engine.

    @Dizzy

There are always going to be class balance issues, but the thing that killed it for me was the realm imbalance in RvR and also the terrible client performance. The lag present on Karak-Norn made it next to impossible to play in large scale battles.

Such a shame, because it has the potential to be an excellent game.

"The lag present on Karak-Norn made it next to impossible to play in large scale battles. "

    I second this.

Also, it's easy to disregard the need for class balance when your class is fine, not so easy when you're the weird guy playing a Magus, not getting picked in a random group against a Sorc.

its an okay game but its my first MMO so....The last tier of the game is the problem for me, it s all so aimless and all for nothing somehow.

    anyone tried this yet?

wont work for me at all - says 'authentication failed' when i try to log in, but my account work perfectly on PC.

I'm starting to think this could be a US only client as there is no mention of it at all on war-europe.

Mac users touch kids, my PC whispers things to me.

The client is US only - GOA are reckoning on the second half of August for a European Beta of the Mac version. Not that the information is easy to find - I found it lurking deep in the forums.

Nice..... There goes my free 10 day resub.. Guess I won't be returning to WAR!

I bought this game on release and it just sat on my shelf since. Did intend to install an XP partition to play it but Windows on my iMac makes me feel dirty.

Anyway, this news made me go ahead and run a Windows 7 partition to give it a go and it isn't that bad to play.

I found that the 3D engine seemed odd compared to WoW, things seem to slide across the terrain etc. Tried most of the different classes and casters really lick balls, ended up sticking with an Orc Choppa as the controls felt responsive.

I might give this a go when it finally reaches EU servers and give WoW a rest for a while to earn some rested XP. Looking forward to it.

    Too f***ing late!

I would have picked this up and had such a laugh with it on launch, but don't release it a year after the PC version and expect many users to pick it up.

Especially as it's now a dying game and the developers (and GoA) are such a bunch of jokers.

I want Turbine to make a Mac version of Lord of the Rings Online. :)
Nice that the Warhammer players will have a Mac version so the wont have to use Bootcamp.
