Valve rolls out new L4D2 play mode

The Passing owners get to "Bleed Out".

Valve has released the first weekly "mutation" for Left 4 Dead 2's The Passing DLC, adding a new time-limited gameplay mode to the game.

"Bleed Out" mode starts Campaign mode players off with slowly deteriorating health that will eventually take them down. The mode also removes any health packs, forcing players to rely on pills and adrenaline for a temporary boost.

Valve has promised "over 20" mutations will eventually be released on a weekly schedule.

    I second that. I want Valve's kids...

The new mode isnt as fun as realism versus, but if nothing else bleed out is different as makes you pick up the pace an aweful lot more.

Theres a vote in game where you can request to bring versus realism back for good.
  • sfp_noodle #5 2 years ago

I agree, versus realism should be a permenant mode for l4d2. Bleed out is cool and makes the action more frantic but realism versus encourages team work between both sets of players

Yeah bleed out isn't great, especially as it's campaign only. Roll on next Friday.
  • hiddenranbir #7 2 years ago

So bleed out encourages the already best strategy of getting far and through as quickly as possible?

For me valve is running out of steam. How long they want to milk their franchises? It's time for new IP.

Yeah, by bringing out new content for free Valve is milking their franchises like no other.

    Wait, what?

    Someone has to start ndgatives...

    @aphexman

making 2 is milking the IP???

when you click on your name your most wanted game is final fantasy 13 apparently.

I'm trying to think of something more ironic.....nope...nothing
  • BillyBrush #12 2 years ago

...although 'Valve is running out of steam' may well be a contender

Mutations are simply manipulation of server variables to produce these effects - there's no new code involved, and they'll cycle them over based on votes. After a while they'll end up with a list of popular ones - then I reckon we'll get an update where you can choose a mutation from that list when you start a game, much like UT has had since the beginning. Cool!

So, I fathom that Valve might add these variables (or mutations) in to optional gameplay mechanics when creating a game. Realism Versus plus Bleed Out plus something else. Would be awesome.
  • loopy #16 2 years ago

My guess is Valve may actually make all the modes permanent once they've gone through one full cycle of them.

Also, moaning about free stuff just makes me laugh, some people are never happy.

(apart from the xboxers, sucks for you guys ;) )

Hopefully they will bring back Realism Versus

    valve are pricks
valve: 2buy our dlc or you wont get any of the new support for the game"
i wouldnt actually mind if the dlc was good but it isnt
  • cen4pgb #19 2 years ago

    @loopy

They wont bring back all of them as permenant game modes. They'll be scared of diluting the comunity to much.

I'd suspect that the most popular will, and some new ones put into a smaller rotation.
  • Les #20 2 years ago

I'd rather they rolled out Steam for Mac...
  • Hermiod #21 2 years ago

The in-game "blog" has/had a poll asking if you want Realism Versus to come back. Presumably there will be one of these polls for each and they'll keep a selection of them for good.

They're just throwing all of these game modes at the wall and seeing which the fans think will stick.

danmachine - how do you know the content is crap? If you havent bought it cos valve are "pricks" how do you know its crap?

You may be right, but I can't see them keeping all of them on permanent rotation either, it'll just piss off people who like to play certain favourites.
