UK charts: Red Dead rides high again

Blur and Alpha Protocol miss top 10 entries.

Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption has spent a second week on top of the UK all-formats chart.

The openworld Western saw off tough competition from UFC Undisputed 2010 in second.

Surprisingly, Activision and Bizarre's new racing game Blur failed to make the top 10, entering 14th.

SEGA and Obsidian's spy RPG Alpha Protocol managed one better and entered 13th.

Behind Red Dead Redemption and UFC Undisputed 2010 were 2010 FIFA World Cup, Just Dance and Wii Fit Plus.

Split/Second: Velocity was sixth, trailed by Modern Warfare 2, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, Lost Planet 2 and Wii Sports Resort.

Red Dead is a fantastic game. Glad its selling, im just not sure where this is. I've recommended it to most of my mates, but they have all said the same thing; all my local game shops have run out of stock!!
  • MiniAmin #3 2 years ago

Surprised Blur failed to crack the top 10, it's a good game. I'd imagine it'll really start to sell once it hits £20-£25. I think many are waiting for it to reach that price.

    Full list please.

Sorry Rob but words aren't forming well in my head today...

Even bigger achievement for RDR considering the whole frickin world seems to be out of stock!
  • Old_Books #6 2 years ago

RDR is very good, much better than GTA IMO, but the situation is similar to when IV was released, most of the reviews have gone completely overboard; always seems to be the case with Rockstar's 'sandbox' games. Kudos to EG, they have been spot on with their reviews recently.

    Don't buy activision, they suck!

I'm not surprised by Blur at all. it looks dull (as in the art direction lacks a bite, neon is all well and good but the rest was just drab) on first glance and frankly if I want to play Mario Kart I'd play that, not with real cars. Put it to Split Second and I'd see what the general public would find more appealing.

It's the same thing like with The Club. Good idea, incredibly dull looks.

Glad to see Blur not doing so well, I've always said Split/Second was the king! I wonder if Modnation Racers has divebombed out of the charts yet? I hope not, it's ace.

Blur is hopefully being shown up for the shameless Mario Kart clone that it is.

I'm not that shocked by Blur's chart position as it seems to be one of those Marmite games you'll either love or hate. RDR stock shortages don't seem to have made an impact on the stocks in Surrey - I went on a shopping spree this weekend and saw it in large supply in 3 specialist retails, 1 indie and in my local Tesco. Shame these new IP's didn't beat PoP in the charts though, and it just shows what having a hollywood movie as your marketing tool will do for your sales.

I'm happily surprised to see SS:V still in the top five, though I noticed this was getting some heavy discounting in my local supermarket already so if thats a nation wide choice they have made then it might be a factor.
  • Retroid #11 2 years ago

Both Blur & Split/Second are 'wait until they're cheaper' purchases for me. Saying that, though, I'm a bit surprised Blur has missed the Top 10 :(
  • Ignatius_Cheese #12 2 years ago

The Game/Gamestation debacle can't have helped Blur's sales figures.

But yes, I'm in the "Sub-£20" crowd for Blur. Beta fun but not full price fun.

Split/Second, on the other hand, is all kinds of awesome ;o)
  • beastmaster #13 2 years ago

I think Split/Second being released first was definitely an advantage. You put the two demos side by side and Split/Second is the more 'glam' of the two.

Very much so. Sorry - have edited.

Really disappointed with Blur's sales. Worldwide leaderboards are only just over 30k at the moment & still to see much more then 3k online at any one time. I love the game, (best yet this year so far) & both single-player & online, it is vastly superior to Split/Second & ModNation Racers. It's also much more polished/balanced than any Mario Kart release IMO.
  • muscleblade #16 2 years ago

Split second is much more entertaining than Blur. The demo didnt do Split Second justice. Its so much more to it.

Good to see Lost Planet 2 doing well despite getting low review scores from almost every website/magazine.

  • Hix15 #17 2 years ago

lost planet 2 is meant to be solid co-op plus shopto were selling it for £19.99, I also saw the limited edition at th weekend in HMV Nottingham going for £24.99
  • BBIAJ #18 2 years ago

Surprised to see Alpha Protocol beating Blur, but Blur as best game of the year!?

    GTFO!
  • MrGuiness #19 2 years ago

yeah i went to game and they told me to go to HMV
  • Monkey_Puncher #20 2 years ago

    Blur > Split Second

Split Second is such limited value, once you've seen the tracks destruction a couple of times the interest depletes faster than Darren Bent's chances of getting into the World Cup squad.

    Oh and yey Red Dead!
  • MontyBrewster #21 2 years ago

    @Eraysor

You're happy Blur's sales are poor because it's a 'shameless Mario kart clone'.

Yet you hope Modnation Racers sells really well.

That's some sound logic right there, you should be a politician.
  • Jeff73 #22 2 years ago

Can not believe blur is not up there is a great game!!!
  • rashes #23 2 years ago

Blur released at a bad time. Too much other stuff out (particularly RDR) and also too close to a very similar game.
Shame as I really enjoyed the Beta/Demo

    @Monkey_Puncher

I agree on the fact that Split Second is short lived. Thats a plus for me as there are so much else to play at the moment. Quality over quantity for me all the way. Split second doesnt have many tracks but they all look amazing compared to the dull looking Blur tracks imo.
  • xentar #25 2 years ago

Go UFC go :) The game... God the game tries SO hard to push players off with the confusing and unforgiving start with zero atmosphere to it. Its ver ylikely the worst start of any game I have ever played and its a shame because the game improved its core functions over 2009. Unfortunately the tutorial in career mode is confusing, short and lacks any depth co newcommers will have hard time getting to the great game UFC 2010 is after you manage the innitial struggle
  • oupe #26 2 years ago

Nah, you should move to the Netherlands. No shortage here.
  • Quixz #27 2 years ago

Forza Motorsport 3 still in there.

It looks like those adverts taking the p*ss out of Mario Kart really worked for Activision with Blur...
  • Farzlepot #29 2 years ago

I feel a strange sense of vindication when a game I like is top of the charts. It's like the world is saying I'm right. It's like everybody is bowing down to my wisdom and foresight.

Even though I have absolutely no impact on peoples' buying decisions.

    Or DO I?
  • Eighthours #30 2 years ago

This is a crying shame, as Blur is absolutely bloody brilliant, and continues to improve the further into it I get. More people need to buy it!
  • RobotRocker #31 2 years ago

Very surprised at Blur. I managed to pick it up for cheap and it is really impressive. It really is Modern Carfare. Activision should have really seized on that.
  • Lee_Morris #32 2 years ago

I can't believe Alpha Protacol charted above Blur. Totally baffling. You've got to blame Acti PR on that cause it looks like a great game.
  • LondonSquare82 #33 2 years ago

I really think the Activision advertising campaign has hindered them. Making such a direct comparission to Mario Kart isn't a great way to sell your game. You'll have people asking "why should I buy this when I own MK already" or worse (in the case of my son) they'll see the fake kart game in the advert and think that looks more interesting than Blur did. Either way, I really feel that a TV ad should show you more of the product, not just a few snippets bookended by a shoddy cartoon.
  • Lee_Morris #34 2 years ago

Exactly London. I don't think the advert did a good job of explaining what the game is. They needed to be more aggressive with split second out a week before. Do PR teams think these games exist in a bubble. It needed to tell people what makes it different from the other games out there although from the vids I've seen just a standard vid of the gameplay isn't going to elicit too much fever as I admit on first glance it isn't very eye catching.

100% agree, 15-20 hrs of Split/Second (which is a constant thrill) is well worth the price of entry imo, especially for me who only usually gets to put in 2hrs at a time max.

  • RobotRocker #36 2 years ago

    @ Lee_Morris

Too true. Activision really shot themselves in the foot on this one, particularly after the release of Sonic and Sega All-Stars racing a few months ago. People will just think, "Why should I buy Blur when my kids want that instead" (plus SASAR is a quality game in its own right with a fair bit of depth to it as well)

I'm really worried for Bizarre Creations now. I'd like to think that Chudley negotiated for them to keep complete creative control on what they do but since Kotick has been on the warpath with his own studios. I think Bizarre could be in the firing line to become the "James Bond" studio only with the under performance of Blur.

I've been having a hell of a lot more fun with Blur than Split/Second, online and off. It's just a shame there are system freezing issues in multiplayer (plus assorted connection problems for some people) on both console versions. In ten online races (PS3 version) I've had two lockups that required a hard reset, plus two random disconnects.

Judging by the official forum these problems are fairly widespread, but at least we got an official acknowledgement today that they are looking into the them.
