UK charts: Final Fantasy XIII is top

PS3 and 360 SKUs nearly neck and neck.

Final Fantasy XIII has become this year's fastest selling game and has topped the UK All-Formats chart.

PS3 marginally outperformed Xbox 360, with 54 per cent of the market.

Last week's leader, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, was pushed to second.

Ubisoft's Wii champion Just Dance was in third, Heavy Rain stayed in fourth and Wii Fit Plus was fifth.

Modern Warfare 2 edged up to sixth, Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing was elbowed to seventh and Aliens vs. Predator fell to eighth. Wii Sports Resort took ninth and New Super Mario Bros. Wii rounded the chart off in 10th.

Superb Dawn of War II expansion Chaos Rising only just missed the top 10 and finished 14th, one spot behind the new Ben 10 game.

PS3 exclusive Yakuza 3 entered in 24th.

The Gold Edition of Resident Evil 5 pulled the game back into the top 40 in 31st, and SEGA's DS Sonic Collection entered in 35th.

Also released last Friday were Way of the Samurai (28th on Xbox 360, 24th on PS3), Avalon Code (MIA DS), Dancing on Ice (13th on Wii), Eye of Judgement: Legends (MIA PSP), Fat Princess (MIA PSP), Music for Everyone (MIA DS), XIII Century: Blood of Europe (MIA PC).

I'm very surprised the sales are so close but I'll refrain from making a childish fanboy comment.
  • Crazyreyn #2 2 years ago

I was expecting a landslide one way or the other. Will be interesting to see how it changes over time.
  • Moonprince #3 2 years ago

"Very surprised the 360 version is so close. Sony "lost" another franchise."

Counter to that is that 360 is about 2mil ahead in the uk so good going for PS3 to be ahead, that considered.
  • JohnnyWashnGo #4 2 years ago

I popped into my local HMV (small town, small shop) and they had FFXII for sale, on 360 only !!!

Was a little shocked to not be able to find the PS3 version. But then, the shop is tiny and the PS3 section is marginally bigger than the PSP section, which is to say, a lot smaller than the 360 part of the store :(

Either they sold out in a day or they never had any PS3 copies.
  • menage #5 2 years ago

Well, "Sony lost another franchise" was already clear 2 years ago off course:p

Simple fact, if you don't have a PS3 you will buy it on 360. Just like you will buy Bayonetta on PS3 when you only have a PS3. You (well, maybe here there are some, but generally, not) don't rush out to buy a system just for one game. Lot's of people there.
  • kratos-i-am #6 2 years ago

In all seriousness third party games should be multi-platform, and these numbers confirm this! Here's hoping a similar fate will occur to third party games that are coming out that are currently exclusive!
  • Beano #7 2 years ago

    What's the UK hardware install-base for PS3 and 360?

Just curious, but maybe that should be taken into account.
  • myiagros #8 2 years ago

Worth remembering that all the TV add's for this in the UK are 360 ones, which i imagine helps.
  • Darren #9 2 years ago

There are more Xbox 360s in this country than PS3s (with as the former having been available longer and a cheaper price point) so the 360 had the greater chance of higher sales. I'm guessing that the PS3 sales are higher than they normally are for multiformat releases because people like me who own both systems have opted for the PS3 version whereas normally I'd have opted for the 360 version?
  • Nazo #10 2 years ago

Hopefully most people with both machines went for the better PS3 version but I don't see why a popular franchise would be a landslide either way, I'm sure the TV adverts helped the 360 version too.
  • youhavenomail #11 2 years ago

Heavy Rain is doing better than it has any right to. Proof that innovative titles can fight it out with Just Dance when given the right marketing.
  • Goodfella #12 2 years ago

If there are so many more 360s why didn't that version outperform the PS3 one?

Pretty obvious really. A lot of people own a 360 and PS3, like myself, and opted for the superior version.
  • groovychainsaw #13 2 years ago

I'd love to know the total sales compared to previous PS2 exclusives. Given the 'dumbed-down' nature of the main game, would be interesting to know if its performed as well or better than previous console-exclusive versions...or whether the linear opening (which has been rightly marked down by most reviews I've seen) has damaged their sales at all? Probably not, but I would love to see those numbers.
  • RobotRocker #14 2 years ago

    @ Darren

You have to add too that a lot of people bought PS3's in expectation that FFXIII was due to be an exclusive to the console. Many of those were going to stick to the PS3 version anyway.
  • Goodfella #15 2 years ago

    Numbers?

It's an obvious assumption, based on the people I know. No, it's not a fact but take off those MS blinkers for a second and think about it, would you get the 360 version if you had a PS3? Most sane people wouldn't.
  • jaywalker3010 Verified Mastering Manager, Square Enix #16 2 years ago

*sighs* whatever happened to reasonable debate, everything now becomes an instant format war with any comment not being totally on the fence seen as `has to be a fanboy` comment.. *yawn*

sales figures are all i care about, not `%` as 50% of 100 is 50, but 50% of 1M is 500,000 - and i know which one i'd see more as of a success.
  • patch #17 2 years ago

Sony franchise through and through? Since when?
  • Goodfella #18 2 years ago

    @ jaywalker3010

To be fair they usually are, one quick look at most users profiles tells they they only have a 360 (in boabg's case) or only a PS3, etc. Of course, that doesn't automatically make them a fanboy but a lot of the time it is the case.
  • onyxbox #19 2 years ago

It was marketed heavily for 360... the whole FF13 on 360 was damage limitation really and it looks to have worked.
  • SHPanda #20 2 years ago

    @ Goodfella

If there are so many more 360s why didn't that version outperform the PS3 one?

Pretty obvious really. A lot of people own a 360 and PS3, like myself, and opted for the superior version.

    ________________________________________

Or and most likely, not everyone who owns a 360 wanted the game? I know I didn't, and infact I only know a couple of people who did. Games aren't going to sell to everyone, and seeing as the franchise has been on the Playstation ever since Squenix moved on from Nintendo, they were bound to have more fans of the series owning their console.
  • Steroyd #21 2 years ago

I'm amazed FF didn't sell more on the Xbox 360 considering how many times I had to listen to "My hands"

    Frikken X-Factor.
  • Goodfella #22 2 years ago

Oh of course, sorry for not looking at your 'aliases'. Why have an alias? Why not put the PS3 games in your main profile?
  • jag10 #23 2 years ago

TUM TITA TA! TUM TITA TA! TUM TITA TA!
  • patch #24 2 years ago

Since sales on their consoles turned it into the monster game series it is today?

Boy, you got to the party late! The first six were epic. Only three of the thirteen were PS only, and they weren't the best of them.
  • GreyBeard #25 2 years ago

Heavy Rain is hanging in there nicely at #4.
Glad to see its doing well.
  • Bertie Verified Senior Staff Writer, Eurogamer.net #26 2 years ago

Heavy Rain's success is very encouraging! Nice to see Sony rewarded for an innovative title after struggling with LBP.
  • MeBrains #27 2 years ago

FF,FF,FF is all the comments are about.

did no-one notice only one 360 exclusive made it to the charts?
  • Widge #28 2 years ago

If you have both platforms, one reason you may get the 360 version is if you're keeping all your achievement points to one system.
  • Moz #29 2 years ago

WOW- even in America the split was about 2/1 in favour of the PS3, the UK really is Microsofts bitch!!

Would be interesting to see trade-in ratios as people buy the 360 bundle just for the 250Gb drive (I very nearly did exactly that myself yesterday).

  • miiiguel #30 2 years ago

@ MeBrains: eheh, you* call me a 360 fanboy - maybe deservedly - but I bet you haven't noticed you talk more about the system than I do.

    * Sorry to use you has an example. You're a nice guy, all in all :)

Yuck...another mediocre title on top...even gimped 360 port is selling...yuck
No numbers means that it didn't break any (significant)records, although it did outsell games released this year(first week).
    Bleh...
  • drumbaby #32 2 years ago

So, people are buying the better version on PS3 by a narrow margin, but with a smaller PS3 install base.
  • Moz #33 2 years ago

did no-one notice only one 360 exclusive made it to the charts?

Nice spot with PS3 having 3 exclusives in the charts (which could also be a factor in the FFXIII situ as people go for Heavy Rain and Yakusa over FF with the plan of picking up FF at a later date)
  • patch #34 2 years ago

    ^ +1

And don't forget God of War III out this week too.
  • RobotRocker #35 2 years ago

an innovative title after struggling with LBP.

LBP was innovative and fun (But not without its shortcomings and its questionable GOTY status) and deserved a lot more success than it got. Heavy Rain can be summed up with this

  • butler` #36 2 years ago

duno what's surprising about the two platforms being so close, it's a big franchise and there's a LOT of 360 players in the UK, so almost irrelevent of how shit the version is it's going to sell.

I went with the ps3 version (RIP achievements) and I'm pretty glad I did.
  • MavSkipper #37 2 years ago

Well considering that most ad I've seen doesn't mention FF13 for PS3(almost to non-existent PS3 ad I might add), I'm not that surprised.

Either way, good stuff that both sold well
  • alcides #38 2 years ago

I loved Final Fantasy XIII right up to Barthandelus... after that? Worst disappointment ever.
  • The_Inquisitor #39 2 years ago

Yakuza 3 only in at 24!?!
Man, once again let down by peoples. :(

SEGA should have released it in summer though, hopefully sales will pick up once everyone's finished with FFXIII (which is great btw), but I doubt it.
  • balflear_pkt #40 2 years ago

360 has twice installed base than 360, this is a success for PS3
  • telboy007 #41 2 years ago

"360 has twice installed base than 360, this is a success for PS3 "

You needs a post edit, init.
  • stevetuck #42 2 years ago

Im well shocked the average human really does not care about the slightly better cutscenes and slightly better detailed hair in a game and just buys it for the console they like the best....

  • swissorc #43 2 years ago

I'm not surprise with everyone at each others throats over the sale ratio's of FF13 that no one has mentioned China Town wars sneaking back in to the chart. Just goes to show that if your patient can sell games on ds as I doubt this is attributed to sales of the port on PSP
  • lennon #44 2 years ago

Went for the 360 option mainly as I couldnt see much of what the fuss was about in terms of the differences and wanted to support these types of game going multiplatform and haveing played the first 3 hours or so I dont regret not going for the ps3 version. I am sure it is technically superior but so far the 360 version hasnt been a let down.
  • GamesConnoisseur #45 2 years ago

Colour me another person suprised at how close X360 sales are to PS3, I and many other (if only poll was enabled in EG!) multi platform owners simply went for superior version. So would have expected PS3 to be ahead a lot.

Perhaps we are not having a clear picture as for example there would be lot more PS3 sales but lost due to these PS3 being almost exclusivilty used as BD player and so on.

I dont see this as a reinforcement of PS3's success but rather how much its had become a level playing field with rival console.
  • BootLace #46 2 years ago

"Yakuza 3 only in at 24!?!"

It really doesn't get given much chance either. Walk into a shop and you've got FFXIII thrust in you face on countless shelves, typically discounted, whilst you're lucky to find a copy of Yakuza 3 and certainly not discounted costing £10-£15 more. Massive shame, but I guess retail knows what's best for them.
  • JediMasterMalik #47 2 years ago

The advertising for FFXIII was heavily geared towards the 360, so that will have influenced sales a lot too.

Glad to see Heavy Rain doing well, never thought it would sell particularly well.
  • DoctorZoidberg #48 2 years ago

Best game on that top 40, number 40 itself. I'm quite pleased its still selling so well after all this time!
  • markymark22 #49 2 years ago

I got mine on ps3. I'm liking it so far. Very very linear though. Called over to my mates house who has it for 360. If the sound on the ps3 is superior its drowned out by the 360 sounding like its about to take off. Seriously microsoft release a quieter model.
  • darleysam #50 2 years ago

Good to see BC2 still up there, just finished it yesterday and want to get some multiplayer time in now. Very good game.
  • Vanmunt #51 2 years ago

love FF13, loved Heavy Rain........ really could not give a toss on what console anybody else has bought their copy on... The lure of those achivements influence your decision, then good luck to you.
  • drxym #52 2 years ago

@squarejawhero If you own a PS3, you're going to buy FFXIII. It's one of the major platform games and has been for over a decade. I'd imagine that those who game but don't peruse platforms were maybe suprised it turning up on 360.

I own a PS3 and I've never played a Final Fantasy game on the platform or its predecessors. The main reason being that I don't like JRPGs at the best of times so one which is virtually linear and is intercut with literally hours of cutscenes and exposition really doesn't do it for me. I'm sure I'm not alone.

But I am not surprised PS3 sold slightly more because the title has more familiarity to owners of that system and to be blunt, the version is markedly better too. It's quite obvious that with so much video content that the 360 version would be squeezed until its pips squeaked.

The advertising for FFXIII was heavily geared towards the 360

Speaking more generally, I'd be interested in learning how this sort of thing works these days. You have a publisher with a multiformat game, yet its advertised exclusively for one of those formats, or first for one then the other. Presumably one platform-holder has tipped the moneyhat, but how are these things arranged? Up for a bit of investigative journalism, EG?
  • Shadzter #54 2 years ago

FF XIII deserved to be at the top, it's awesome. In Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing's position on your chart you forgot to put the PC version again, nothing worth making a fuss over but just thought I'd say.

I feel sorry for the uninformed out there who don't know about the differences between the 2 versions and have brought the Xbox version.
  • Collymilad #56 2 years ago

"WOW- even in America the split was about 2/1 in favour of the PS3, the UK really is Microsofts bitch!! "

Hmm yeah because MS are forcing us to buy 360's and games for the 360. Perhaps UK gamers just prefer the 360?

Anyway, you could just as easily say that the rest of the EU is Sony's bitch if you're going to be like that.

@Privatejoker - you mean the multiple disks and the slightly lower resolution graphics (which, btw, most reviews say are still gorgeous)

And yes, there is the compressed audio and FMV, but most people won't even notice it without hearing both.

OK,we've played the percentage game, how about some actual numbers?
  • miiiguel #58 2 years ago

@ Bigglesworth : comon sense would say that MS paid for the advertisement. Here in Portugal, every single game is advertised as PS games. Every. Single. One.

I bet the joker dude is crying for me, I do not have a PS3 and I bought a Super Elite to celebrate on of my favourite franchises. :)

  • curtlikesmeat #59 2 years ago

I own both systems and went for it on the PS3 since it's obviously superior. I have to say I'm enjoying it quite a lot despite it being very linear. It certainly has that FF vibe to it, and it's a long time since I last tasted that, the last one I played being FFX.
  • Dizzy #60 2 years ago

All while the real men play Chaos Rising.
  • Scimarad #61 2 years ago

Nice to see an FF at the top again.
  • IneptPercy #62 2 years ago

I am with many others, own a 360 and don't own a PS3. Yes I am aware the 360 version is slightly lessor in graphics but not enough to make me purchase a PS3.

The reality is that if this was an exclusive game it would have shifted PS3's, if we go with the assumption that all 46% percent went to 360 only gamers which would make sense. Of that 46% of gamers who where happy to accept the inferior version, if it was PS3 only would they have bought a PS3? Of course we will never know what the figures would have been but this would have been a system seller for Sony.

Now I have tried to look at the objectively without bias, but those who don't agree feel free to mark me down.
  • EmiliasHorse #63 2 years ago

I could not decide which version of FFXIII to buy so went for a copy of Brutal Legend for £12 at Tesco.....Bargain.

360 version by the way, it is not bad.

"Simple fact, if you don't have a PS3 you will buy it on 360. Just like you will buy Bayonetta on PS3 when you only have a PS3."

I only have a PS3 and didn't buy Bayonetta because the port was so very bad. The negative effect on the gameplay was too much for me.
  • telboy007 #68 2 years ago

But I thought that was patched?
