Tiger 11 won't support Natal

"Not in a position to do so" for this one.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 game will not support Project Natal but will support PlayStation Move.

"We are always evaluating new technologies and Natal would be a perfect fit for the Tiger Woods PGA Tour franchise," an EA spokesperson told Joystiq, "however, we are simply not in a position to do so with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11."

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 will be released 8th June on iPhone, PS3, Wii and Xbox 360.

Besides PlayStation Move support, big new features are Ryder Cup integration, foursomes, online teamplay for up to 24 people and perhaps a nice pair of scandals I mean sandals.

Sony revealed PlayStation Move to the world this week at GDC. We soaked that up, played every one of the demonstration games and then cornered Sony Europe's Michael Denny for a friendly inquisition.

If Natal doesn't major publisher support, and soon, then it's over before it's begun. Personally Move sounds like something I would use more than Natal, but we'll see.

Doesn't the song go something like "why should developers bother to learn new hardware when they can take the easy cheap route?"

I bought a DVD the other day, Tigers greatest 18 holes.

I was not happy when it turned out to be a bloody DVD about golf!

...until they announce it at MS's E3 press event :D

I bet there is a hot coffee style hidden game in this somewhere.

Did you miss the bit where MS announced a wad of publishers who are supporting Natal last year? Or where they said in January of this year that over 70% of all publishers are working on Natal games?

The support is there but we won't know until E3 exactly what they're working on, or if it was even worth me bothering to type this post.

No Natal controls means no buy for me.

Without motion controls this will be Tiger Woods PGA golf 2010 dressed up with Ryder Cup support.
  • LetsGo #15 2 years ago

I guess its hard to play golf with camera lag....

I didn't, but if you read EG regularly you'll know that all of these jokes have been made many, many times. Every Tiger Woods comments thread has basically been identical since the news broke.

  • drxym #18 2 years ago

I'm not surprised it won't support Natal. It's quite obvious that Natal can't offer anywhere close to the precision or accuracy required for something like Tiger Woods. Perhaps it might be adequate for some kind of golf mini game though.
  • drxym #19 2 years ago

@woodnotes Did you miss the bit where MS announced a wad of publishers who are supporting Natal last year? Or where they said in January of this year that over 70% of all publishers are working on Natal games?

Add Ubisoft, Activision and EA together plus Microsoft's own studios and you'd have 70% of all publishers by volume sales. That doesn't imply that any 3rd party is doing anything substantial with Natal. Same goes for the Move if Sony are making similar pronouncements.
  • makeamazing #20 2 years ago

Difference is Move would be easier to retrofit into a game while Natal wouldnt i suspect... also are the odd few in this topic serious that they would want to play a natal based golf game... i cannot imagine how that would work well.
  • ryandsimmons #21 2 years ago

On a serious note these games are great with the WiiMote and the Move, as long as it has perfect tracking. (So probably not the wiimote, and I have no idea about the Move.) However I fail to see how this game would work on Natal unless you bought a peripheral with it. To simulate golf you NEED a golf club in your hand, otherwise how do you adjust the hook / slice or even get a decent "realistic" swing?

I'm not saying it can't be done on Natal, but I honestly have no idea how. It just seems more naturally suited to a handheld motion controller.
  • MiniAmin #22 2 years ago

I think Natal's biggest successes will emerge outside video games. Imagine how it'd transform business presentations being able to navigate Powerpoint with Natal. I'm not too sure about how successful it'll be as a gaming platform though.
  • kobashi #23 2 years ago

guys, EA are not saying Natal will not work with Tiger Woods. Did you all miss the quote from EA??

"We are always evaluating new technologies and Natal would be a perfect fit for the Tiger Woods PGA Tour franchise," an EA spokesperson told Joystiq, "however, we are simply not in a position to do so with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11."

I guess Natal would require some kind of golf club so EA would have to bundle it with something.

Also Would it not support use of a personal golf club?

When I actually picture this in my head it really doesn't look like any sort of improvement...

    "Tiger 11" won't support Natal

    BUT

"Tiger Woods (insert Natals real name here) Golf" will when its released with it

    ;)
  • MiniAmin #26 2 years ago

When I actually picture this in my head it really doesn't look like any sort of improvement...

You're probably right. Still, besides that specific example, i'm quite sure it'll yield some success outside gaming.
  • john_silence #27 2 years ago

"Not in A POSITION" to do what?!
  • Fletche #28 2 years ago

    @ryandsimmons

I believe you can use anything to simulate the golf club/hocky stick/gun/rubber chicken, what ever you are trying to simulate and the camera will do it's magic turning what you have in your hand into the article on screen, don't know how also would this need to be scanned every time you started the game up? Would holding something different in your hand effect how the camera/software interprets what you are holding?

All seems a little over complicated for a golf game really
  • Quak #29 2 years ago

It's on the iPhone but not the PSP nor the DS? Interesting.
  • tiny_Eggy #30 2 years ago

Both Move and Natal do not interest me at all. But as they are optional it's not a big problem.
  • Markusdragon #31 2 years ago

Move's Accelerometers/Gyroscope = Easy port of Wii tiger woods control systems

Natal probably works, but it's calculations would be entirely different and would need to be built from the ground up.
  • metalangel #32 2 years ago

None of the programmers were willing to program Natal to track a tumescent member as required for the "be Tiger Woods" mode.
  • Spekingur #33 2 years ago

Natal support in Tiger Woods 12 - announced at E3. Saw it here first.
  • jambo74 #34 2 years ago

    Move along now 360 Woods...
  • TeaFiend #35 2 years ago

Considering that TW11 is out in June and Natal is cited as "late 2010" I can see many reasons why it is not being supported. I doubt anything that supports Natal will actually be released before the controller.
  • kobashi #36 2 years ago

    @quak

It has not been on the DS is since 2007/2008 I think so no surprise really.
  • tancredo #37 2 years ago

Allard was mentioned in the past as working on a kind of Magic Wand to control multiple devices. I would not be surprised if MS would use that tech as a simplified controller to use in conjunction with Natal.

Of course, it has been ages sinceI heard anything from Allard's project so it could have been cancelled. There was a patent application for it in May 2009...

PS3 Move is scheduled to be released in roughly the same period as Natal so by that logic, it shouldn't support Move either. Though of course Move is so similar to Wii that it's probably very easy to add, which appears not to be the case for Natal.
  • Rirekon #39 2 years ago

Basically the game was too far along before they got access to the Natal kits to implement it this time around
  • Bander #40 2 years ago

"I guess its hard to play golf with camera lag.... "

Indeed. All those moving targets will be difficult to hit if there's any delay...

This is either a delayed-dev-kit thing or a Sony-have-asked-very-nicely thing. More likely the later. There's always the option of patches, which may be necessary on PS3 anyway, unless Move is already 100% guaranteed to be finalised half a year before its release.

It's probably to do with the amount of revisions Natal is having making it hard to finalise if they can support both it AND a controller. So, controller for now, Natal later.
  • electrolite #42 2 years ago

Markusdragon has covered it. From WMP to PS Move is pretty straightforward I'd have thought. Natal will need more work.

everything else is overreaction. Move along, nothing to see here

I dont see playing with an invisible and imaginary cub in my hands. And if they are to bundle a plastic accesory with each game .....Natal and the 360 will bring lots of plastic shit home!!

Personally, I think that's how Natal started out, i.e. as a non-gaming app, and then some bright guy/girl had the idea that this might be cool for gaming as well.

Microsoft removed the processor from Natal, so EA would have to re-work the game to accommodate the change.

And since EA release the same basic game every year with only minor tweaks, their engine by this point is pretty dependant on the entire 360 processor being available to them. You can't just patch Natal controls into existing games any more, which doesn't fit with EA's yearly update philosophy.

If all the processing was handled by Natal, like it was originally going to be, then Tiger 2011 would almost certainly be compatible. Decisions, decisions Microsoft. I hope you made the right one.

As it stands, Tiger will be out around June anyway and Natal can get a specific golf game made for it when it releases in October. EA likes money.
