THQ reveals UFC 2009: Undisputed details News

PlayStation 3 Xbox 360 News by Dan Pearson

23 June, 2008

Those of you who like a bit of ultimate fighting will be pleased to hear that THQ has announced a new UFC game.

Ultimate Fighting Championship 2009: Undisputed is the latest in series of games based around the leading mixed martial arts competition.

The latest one will feature more than 80 of the sport's top fighters as well as popular commentators, referees and of course 'octagon girls'. Photo-realism has been bandied about with regard to the graphics - watch the trailer to see for yourself.

You can expect all the usual blood, sweat and tears, plus as an innovative 'rippling' system to accentuate particularly crunchy impacts. UFC's newer, less permissive ruleset specifically outlaws "Putting a finger into any orifice or into any cut or laceration on an opponent", so Tom's special 'Hello Sailor' finishing move will be off the books this time around.

Expect to find yourself being pummelled into submission by the likes of Quinton Jackson and BJ Penn as early as next spring on PS3 and 360.

I haven't watched UFC in ages, is it still two grown men laying on the floor cuddling? That's all that used to happen on the fights I watched :)

Liked the dreamcast game years ago, but I don't think I'll pay up for this one

Love UFC - but will be surprised if this is a great game.

As for photo-realism - the Forrest Griffin model looks terrible but the others don't look too bad.

I'd love to see you enter the ring and 'cuddle' your way out of a pounding ;)

There's quite a bit more to it than that.

Does it have a mode where you can make Tito and Dana argue?

I'm hoping it turns out to be a hidden gem, because if done well this could be an awesome title.

UFC has to be the gayest looking sport I've ever seen. Even men doing ballet pales in comparison to scantily clad muscley men writhing around atop one another.

I'm glad to hear the rules have been changed to disallow penetration.

looks ok i guess, but the animation needs some work, but its still a long way off yet.

i liked the old DC one, but the ones that followed sucked really bad, so will have to see with this one

Looks good, hope it plays good. Love the UFC, so maybe this game will do the sport justice.

Suggesting that grappling on the ground in a fight is like "hugging" leads me to question your sexual orientation. I bet you haven't even watched a UFC event, so please refrain from commenting like you know something about it. MMA is highly skilled and so much better than other combat sports.

I think this game is looking great. The old UFC games were so much slower and really basic.

ianegg> You're the one suggesting that the "orifice" in question is someone's arsehole...

The rule is really there to stop people from fish hooking, eye gouging, etc.

I used to watch it years ago when the Gracies dominated it, and it was shit TBH. But I went to the recent event at the O2, and it has changed quite a bit for the better. Much more scope for knockouts now, which to be fair, is what people want to see.
