Tales series heads to Wii, PS3, PSP News

PSP Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii
News by Robert Purchese

2 April, 2009

Namco Bandai plans to bring new Tales of games to PS3, Wii and PSP.

Tales of Graces will be the Wii instalment, according to Japanese magazine Jump (scanned and digested by Kombo). The game will be out in Japan later this year, and features a story based on the main character's desire never to lose someone again.

Tales of VS (versus) will be the PSP fighting game spin-off, and apparently a direct rival to Dissidia: Final Fantasy (which we thought was tip-top). Again, there's little information, but we know four players will be able to do battle dressed as well-known characters from the series; so far Yuri (Tales of Vesperia), Luke (Tales of the Abyss), Shing (Tales of Hearts) and Richter (ToSKoR) have been revealed.

Finally, Tales of Vesperia will be converted to PS3. This has already been released on Xbox 360 in Japan and America, and awaits a European release in June.

Vesperia, so far, has had a decent reception, taking home a Metacritic average of 81 per cent. And you can find much more information over on the Tales of Vesperia gamepage.

Remember when Tales used to be a relatively sporadic series?

This really shouldn't surprise anyone.

Vesperia's easily the best JRPG on the 360 right now, with it going to PS3 and more of the smaller developers (eg Gust with the new Atelier game) going Sony's direction it looks like Microsoft's day in the sun with the genre is probably drawing to a close.

I'm hoping this time Namco include the Japanese dialogue as an option with PS3 Vesperia. I'd happily buy the game again if that was an option, and they surely can't use the 'no space' excuse again when they're stuffing what fit on a single DVD onto a blu-ray.

I might check out Vesperia at some point; I liked Symphonia but that's my only experience of the series.

I wonder if this means MS only paid for timed exclusives on all these RPGs, then?

So a new Wii tales game is announced but Symphonia 2 is still nowhere to be seen from an PAL gamer's perspective?

Apparently the PS3 version of Vesperia will be an enhanced port, featuring at least one new character.

Thats a good reason to pick up Star Ocean 4 in June then and Vesperia on PS3 when it gets any kind of English version.

@neonemesis Namco Europe never, for whatever reason put them out (Tales of the Abyss anyone) even though rpgs like Persona are doing solid numbers right now. So unless a publisher steps in, most likely Nintendo we might never see it or the other interesting Namco Japan titles like Fragile and Sky Breakers for the Wii.

it's business. they're all going on all formats as there is no one dominant format like last gen.
