Squenix warns of FFXI server breach

Player accounts disclosed as a result.

Square Enix has warned the Final Fantasy XI community of a possible "breach" of server security that may put accounts at risk.

"Dear valued Final Fantasy XI player," the email sent out to players begins, "Square Enix is committed to protecting your user information."

But: "We have just been alerted to a potential breach of Square Enix’s secure systems from an external source. This may have resulted in the disclosure of a limited number of PlayOnline IDs, passwords and user account data.

"Please be assured that your credit card data has not been compromised," the email continues. "We are taking this matter very seriously and are conducting a full investigation."

Final Fantasy XI is an eight year-old MMO. Let's hope these kinds of problems are ironed out in Final Fantasy XIV, which is due to launch on PC later this year - and on PS3 presumably at a later date.

I suppose this email was translated from Japanese seeing as they're the only ones that still play it and the only ones to recieve the email.

One breach in eight years and you're scare-mongering. SHAME ON YOU, Robert Purchese.

And actually it still has a sizeable population in the western world from their last report. Not WoW big, but big enough.

"Square Enix is committed to protecting your user information."

    No you're not.

Well, they're committed to saying they are.

I'm committed to becoming supreme ruler of Earth. Not sure that's going to be enough though.

FFXI has had many problems in its life, and this is another one. What strikes me about this is that for FFXIV they're dropping PlayOnline - which isn't a bad thing, but was designed to add more security.

As for those still playing FFXI, good for you, but I left at the great economy scandal of 2006 and I've found, truthfully, that I've never had that compulsion to go back. I have good memories of it, of course, but for me FFXI will forever and always be tainted by the sting of the real money traders hiking every single price and the pain, the spam and the general anger and resentment that the whole episode wrought on the playerbase.

I look forward to FFXIV, but hope desperately that it's learned some lessons from FFXI...

Is that right? I thought it was to be released on the PS3 at the same time......... thats a bit of a disappointment
    if true.

    Good show on them!

The NCsoft accounts page has been breached a bazillion times and they still deny it even though loads of Guild Wars forum users have repeatedly shown them how to do it.

    Honesty IS THE BEST POLICY.

    This is commendable.

"Commendable" would be protecting your data so it can't be stolen in the fucking first place.

Telling you that it has been is bordering on "polite" at best.

I was playing that game 10 hours a day 7 days a week for most of 2006 and I can't remember any scandal.

Woah. That's a lot. I'm not surprised you forget stuff. Can you remember your family? Or how to tie your shoes?

If you've been playing since NA launch, then the whole of 2006 was a bloody scandal, lol. I remember14,000,000g being the going price for a noble's tunic

    @Milky
Also work in IT, so I understand. My point is that i'm consistently appalled at people's personal data going walking, be it on trains on laptops, or via back doors on servers. Not good enough imo.

There's not enough accountability (and consequences) i feel over data security failings.

"'Great economy scandal'? Whats that then? I was playing that game 10 hours a day 7 days a week for most of 2006 and I can't remember any scandal."

You'll know EXACTLY what I mean then. I'd spent a lot of time getting up an Elvaan White Mage/Summoner and Ninja/Warrior combination, and I'd gotten most of my synths to a good level - but the real money was in bonecrafting, which I wanted to take some advantage of. Plus, of course, a Scorpion Harness +1 for a Ninja tank wasn't exactly a dealbreaker, y'know?

When the economy started going screwy, most of us who had synths rather high were just keeping afloat, but as it went on - it fast became a battle that we normal players were only ever going to lose. When the Venomous Claws were going for millions of gil, and yet the normal harness was merely 10% of the price of the materials, I gave up. It was too much, the gilsellers had won, no-one could do jack unless they were happy to play the game of the RMT. And I wasn't, and I left, and I don't regret it.

I was not the only one to leave though - much of the userbase I knew had begun leaving before that over the inability to combat the economy disaster. I had been playing WoW for a while beforehand casually and most of us ended up there - where we had a guild together for the best part of three years, off and on of course as we dabbled in other games. These days I still keep in touch with most of them via messengers, skype, private ventrilo server etc.

But none of us went back to FFXI. Square Enix couldn't protect its userbase so we went elsewhere for our kicks. That's how it is and indeed, how it should be. I don't for a second regret my time in FFXI, but I regret that it had to end on such a sour note. Vana'diel is a lovely place, but it hurt me and it hurt lots of other people I came to know, admire and respect - there's no way back from that. I do hope FFXIV fares much better, but I approach the vicinity of it with extreme caution - one bitten, twice shy...

This is horrid, but in a sense, I kind of hope my details have been long destroyed - not just because I want them to be, but because personally I think the PlayOnline system was and is a steaming pile of crap, and if anything deserves to be left to rot in the pit of obsolescence. That and if somehow I ever hit my head hard enough to want to go back, at least I know the final failsafe is my details would have been deleted...

Sad I know, mark me down, truth hurts. That said, FFXI led into FFXII and I adored FFXII technically, so any hate I have is offset by that.
