Sony grabs Ghostbusters from Atari News

Sony Computer Entertainment will now be publishing Terminal Reality's Ghostbusters title in a surprise deal signed with Atari today, according to GamesIndustry.biz.
The game is set for a June 19 release alongside the Sony Pictures film, but only on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2 platforms. They will have a period of exclusivity lasting several months until the PSP edition is launched.
It is unclear exactly what will happen to the Xbox 360 version of the game, although GamesIndustry.biz understands that Atari may look to publish it later on.
This will be the third publisher within a year for the Ghostbusters game. The former Vivendi title was dropped by Activision in the merger last summer, before subsequently being picked up by Atari.

I don't agree with all this exclusivity bullsh*t but at least when Microsoft has paid for exclusity rights they do it waaaay in advance of the release date. What Sony has done is pretty low-down and dirty. Sure, the Ghostbusters franchise belongs to them but as far as I'm concerned they should have missed the boat on this one. Guess I'll cancel my pre-order. Under-handed cnuts!. |

Kinda makes me wonder if Sony saw something in the game that most of us didn't. They rarely pick up anything third party these days. Let's hope they picked it up because they see a potential AAA title in it. I don't think Ghostbusters (the name) sells that much anymore, only us oldies that grew up with the films have any kind of attachmen to the franchise. Plus, there's no movie to coincide with this (unless, again, Sony knows something we don't).
I'm not entirely sure why they would pick this up, other than for being a damn good game? Maybe they just wanted the engine? EDIT: ah, Ghostbusters is SONY property? That explains it somewhat at least.

Does this mean Sony will now spend the next month removing the anti-aliasing, applying the vasoline blur effect and dropping the frame rate to sub-30FPS. It's what PS3 owners expect.
/Apologises for being a pissed off 360 owner who is old enough to have seen Ghostbusters at the cinema but still doesn't have enough disposable income to fork out nearly £300 for another console just so he can play the game. /Punches a wall, breaks hand, can't play anything now |

Surprised, but if Sony hadn't gotten publishing rights they should have made a LE with the game plus movie at least, similar to Stranglehold and Hard Boiled. Actually they still should.

Fucking ridiculous. Considering there are boxes for both versions on both shelves, too.
Frankly an idiotic move that's going to cost them consumers that were going to buy it out of the gate. |

whilst somewhat pissed, the 360 / PS3 versions had nerfed co-op mode anyway so not all that sad.

Clever move in some ways as itis a huge film. Must be nearly done so that's a finished version for 360 just dumped. feel a bit sorry for the devs. I'm not sure is being so last minute is great PR to any except the devoted Sony fan though. Seems a slap to those who pre-orderd and i can't see them buying a ps3 for it? I have a ps3 but think i'll wait for the wiior 360 version anyway, not getting forced to buy it by Phil and his tactics.

Very annoying, I was going to be getting this. Ah well, a little wait won't hurt as I've still a huge backlog of games to get through.
At least any criticisms or bugs will have time to be ironed out in the 360 version as happened with Alone In The Dark. |

I have high hopes for this game. I think it might be pretty good actually. Even so i dont mind really because i already have too many games on my shopping list for the summer.
Funny how the PS3 owners rather wait for the 360 version. So much for exclusivity eh.

I wonder is this just for PAL territories? If so, make the Xbox 360 US version region free, please. :)

"Later this year" doesn't sound like "a bit later" at all! More like fucking 6 months. This is a very bad move on behalf of Atari, not only because they promised their customers a simultanous release but also because releasing this game during the crowded Christmas time is not a good idea at all. |

Good to see it's still coming for the Wii/360/DS ..I guess they will get a release closer to Christmas..which might actually help sales wise.
It makes sense for Sony to lock-up an exclusive for the slow summer..as there's little in the way of blockbuster titles for any of the machines for the next 4 months (with the exception of Wii Sports Resort). Still..it's quite ironic that a couple weeks ago Sony were saying Microsoft looked 'desperate' because they kept moneyhatting exclusives.. |
