Sony grabs Ghostbusters from Atari

Game to become PlayStation exclusive?

Sony Computer Entertainment will now be publishing Terminal Reality's Ghostbusters title in a surprise deal signed with Atari today, according to GamesIndustry.biz.

The game is set for a June 19 release alongside the Sony Pictures film, but only on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2 platforms. They will have a period of exclusivity lasting several months until the PSP edition is launched.

It is unclear exactly what will happen to the Xbox 360 version of the game, although GamesIndustry.biz understands that Atari may look to publish it later on.

This will be the third publisher within a year for the Ghostbusters game. The former Vivendi title was dropped by Activision in the merger last summer, before subsequently being picked up by Atari.

"Wow! Talk about telekinetic activity, look at this mess!"

Nice pick-up for Sony. The game will inevitably do very well, whether it's any good or not.
  • menage #4 3 years ago

Surprised by this, seeing as it was probably near finished.

Now for fucks sake don't let it be an inferior version

  • myiagros #15 3 years ago

    Wow!!

I was suprised Sony didn't pick this up when Activision let it go, but to take it on from Atari this close to release is suprising to say the least.

Which version had journalists been being shown up till now?
  • patch #16 3 years ago

They'll still release the 360 version, but nerf it so the ps3 can finally win a EuroGamer comparison.
  • woodnotes #17 3 years ago

    "does this mean it'll suck?"

When it gets 6/10, instead of "will get it anyway, it's Ghostbusters godamnit!", it'll be "ps3lol".

Proving once and for all that Sony are a bunch of god-damn c*cksuckers!
I don't agree with all this exclusivity bullsh*t but at least when Microsoft has paid for exclusity rights they do it waaaay in advance of the release date. What Sony has done is pretty low-down and dirty. Sure, the Ghostbusters franchise belongs to them but as far as I'm concerned they should have missed the boat on this one.

    Guess I'll cancel my pre-order. Under-handed cnuts!.
  • Tiiti #24 3 years ago

So Vivendi and Atari did all the publishing work for a Sony IP just for them to snap it back at the last minute. Gits :p.
  • BillyBrush #25 3 years ago

...Phil Harrison hard at work then..
  • Skeletor #26 3 years ago

After all the hype this is a serious slap in the face for 360 owners. Especially the ones who already preordered it!
Really "nice" way to alienate your paying customers...seems Sony is even more desperate than most people think.

Kinda makes me wonder if Sony saw something in the game that most of us didn't. They rarely pick up anything third party these days. Let's hope they picked it up because they see a potential AAA title in it. I don't think Ghostbusters (the name) sells that much anymore, only us oldies that grew up with the films have any kind of attachmen to the franchise. Plus, there's no movie to coincide with this (unless, again, Sony knows something we don't).

I'm not entirely sure why they would pick this up, other than for being a damn good game? Maybe they just wanted the engine?

EDIT: ah, Ghostbusters is SONY property? That explains it somewhat at least.

  • AlvySinger #29 3 years ago

Does this mean Sony will now spend the next month removing the anti-aliasing, applying the vasoline blur effect and dropping the frame rate to sub-30FPS. It's what PS3 owners expect.

/Apologises for being a pissed off 360 owner who is old enough to have seen Ghostbusters at the cinema but still doesn't have enough disposable income to fork out nearly £300 for another console just so he can play the game.

/Punches a wall, breaks hand, can't play anything now
  • TopKatt #30 3 years ago

Although I can understand owners of other platforms being annoyed by this, I think this is a good move for Sony and it's about time to be honest.
  • Kenshin001 #31 3 years ago

Surprised, but if Sony hadn't gotten publishing rights they should have made a LE with the game plus movie at least, similar to Stranglehold and Hard Boiled. Actually they still should.

    @Paulanator

"Later this year" doesn't sound like "a bit later" at all! More like fucking 6 months.
This is a very bad move on behalf of Atari, not only because they promised their customers a simultanous release but also because releasing this game during the crowded Christmas time is not a good idea at all.
  • Goodfella #46 3 years ago

Funny how the PS3 owners rather wait for the 360 version. So much for exclusivity eh.

All talk. Come PS3 launch day they'll be there with cash in hand.
  • CallousB #47 3 years ago

Good to see it's still coming for the Wii/360/DS ..I guess they will get a release closer to Christmas..which might actually help sales wise.

It makes sense for Sony to lock-up an exclusive for the slow summer..as there's little in the way of blockbuster titles for any of the machines for the next 4 months (with the exception of Wii Sports Resort). Still..it's quite ironic that a couple weeks ago Sony were saying Microsoft looked 'desperate' because they kept moneyhatting exclusives..
  • Britesparc Verified Creative, ITV #48 3 years ago

Just to clarify, the game IS still coming out on 360/PC/Wii, but "later this year" and published by Atari. Essentially Sony have grabbed an exclusivity period and published it themselves for their consoles.

Still sucks a bit, mind, was really looking forward to it on 360. Never mind, LOADS of games to play at the mo.

  • Skeletor #57 3 years ago

    @guernican

"It's just not fair, and I shall stamp my foot and whine until someone buys me an ice-cream. "

It really ISN'T fair mainly because Atari already hyped the simultanous release to hell and back. Exclusives should be marketed as such and dissapointing your potential customers by pushing a product back several months due to pure greed is a very dirty business tactic indeed.
But that's probably a little bit too complicated for you...
  • Moribundman #58 3 years ago

This is only going to piss on everyone's chips.

It's only a timed exclusive, so obviously its "delayed" for MS and Nintendo owners which is a pain, but even Sony fans won't have the luxury of a fully exclusive title to crow about.

Atari will lose muchos $$$ in Nintendo/MS presales for the Summer and if the game gets poor or even mediocre reviews on its "exclusive" release, the good will and "buy unseen" sales the license would have drummed up will fall away like ash.

Not going to do anyone any good.
  • El-Dev #59 3 years ago

Think you've given yourself too much credit to be honest.

Suppose it was fair that MS paid the Bioshock developers for a timed exclusive even though they started PS3 development at the same time as the 360?

Lookin forward to this, if it gets a 7 or over it'll be a day one purchase.
  • Fallen_Angel #60 3 years ago

@Skeletor And thats the main difference right there. I'll fully admit that MS is no better with exclusive DLC, but at least they've always said from the outset of the games announcement thats how it would play out. For Sony to pull this a month before release seems a bit more shady. Let 360/Wii owners get all hyped up about it only to go "Aaaaand now you have to spend 300 quid on our console if you want to play it in the next six months". Though the reverse of Eternal Sonata/Tales of Vesperia could happen and the 360 gets exclusive extra content :p

@muscleblade Read the link or google some other sites that confirm this to be the case.
  • Sunyavadin #64 3 years ago

So, we get 4-6 extra months in develoment to really focus on the higher res textures and smoother anti-aliasing that differentiates 360 and PS3 games? I'm cool with that.

Also means I can cancel my preorder if it turns out to be crap.
  • myiagros #65 3 years ago

At least this time the nature of exclusivity is fairly open, even it is annoying for those who have to wait.

What annoys me most is when games are announced and advertised as platform exclusive despite the fact they turns up elsewhere later.

I wish platform holders and developers would be more honest about whether titles are truely exclusive, or only for a timed period.
  • Widge #66 3 years ago

Kind of annoying to wait, I had to wait for Eternal Sonata/Bioshock and will have to for Tales (I expect) ... but its not a big bind as I've still got the big stack of unplayed to go through. You've got to put aside your "release now! buy immediately!" feelings.

If you're getting to play it in the end then its not a bad state of affairs really.
  • Skeletor #67 3 years ago

    @El-Dev

"Suppose it was fair that MS paid the Bioshock developers for a timed exclusive even though they started PS3 development at the same time as the 360?"

What a load of bullshit! The leading platform for Bioshock was always the 360 and it was marketed from the very beginning as a 360/PC (timed-) exclusive title. You could at least TRY to get your facts straight!
    Sony must be very desperate...
  • NotSoSlim #68 3 years ago

People need to get over it...it exclusive for now and may be exclusive full stop. SO what as 360 owners keep telling PS3 ownere you have loads and loads of games to play, isnt Tales of Vesperia and Star Ocean out in June??

    Exactly!! Its a bloody game
  • breedob #69 3 years ago

    @muscleblade
MCV has learnt that the title will still arrive on Xbox 360, DS and Wii, published by Atari. A rep from the publisher told MCV these SKUs will arrive "later this year".

“Atari is committed to maximizing the launch of the Ghostbusters videogame across Europe,”

I'd love to know how they could possibly think that this "maximises" the launch of the game, when its releasing on 4 platforms less!
  • Erebu #74 3 years ago

  • peteb #75 3 years ago

    @Erebu

Well MS haven't done anything quite the same as this, when the game is just over a month away, I think thats what most people are talking about.
  • RustyBullet #76 3 years ago

I have both the PS3 and 360, but like others i will wait for the 360 version, out of spite? NO, just because with most multi platform games the 360 versions are normally better. My PS3 is used for Sony exclusives (not timed exclusives) The main problem with the PS3 is the online side (probably because of it being free) and crap intergration of the xmb. Someone at Sony should take a long hard look at the service and ability of the xbox dash and live service and pull there fingers out of there arses.
  • Erebu #77 3 years ago

    @ peteb
Not "exactly" the same but what about Eternal Sonata, Tales of Vesperia, Lost and Damned, FO3 DLC?
The point is every time MS bought exclusivity many called it "clever" and Sony "stupid" for not doing the same, but now suddenly if it affects their console of choice, hence the X360, they call it a dick-move.
The Ghostbusters IP belongs to Sony, why is it hard to understand that they are finally getting their act together and using their synergies?

    @ farticusmaximus
Hello Last Remnant, Eternal Sonata, Tales of Vesperia, Ace Combat 6, Bioshock, Lost and Damned, FO3 DLC... STFU!

Anyways it's coming to XBox360 and Wii. Read the fucking update you moron.

Yes farticus, LOL. Wipe those tears away. I'm doing the same, but out of laughter.
  • EvilBob_leeds #84 3 years ago

    These are not high profile

Yeah, GTA4 DLC is real niche, it's not like Microsoft spent a fortune plastering UK TV with ads for the Lost and the damned.

    Hollywood-associated games

What difference does that make? The overwhelming majority of Hollywood-associated games are shovelware of fucking shocking quality.

then moneyhatted at the last minute

It does suck, but why this invective against Sony? Are you saying Microsoft wouldn't do this sort of thing given the opportunity? Of course they fucking would.

thus fucking up any chance of them ever selling close to their full potential

Yeah, but that happens with 360 exclusives as well as PS3 exclusives. It's probably only the Wii that it wouldn't happen on since everyones got one.

...touch the charts due to it selling like crap, as every single PS3 game does

Aww... boo hoo. This would be like the SFIV sales figures where the PS3 figures were worse than the 360 ones. Oh wait, that didn't happen, the PS3 sales were better. And Resident evil 5.. ahhh, no same thing again. Get over yourself man.

So true if it's exclusive fine but don't make a game one so close to release when you've been hyping muliplatform. 2nd hand buy now to discourage these tactics. I would hope many of you all do the same...
  • Widge #86 3 years ago

People, how can you bicker like this when the Darkfall injustice is going on?
  • Erebu #87 3 years ago

    @ bad09

What many fail to see is that Sony finally realized that they can't keep on with their "every part of our company works for itself"-policy. You can expect more of this in the future. Sony isn't only SCE! They own so many movie and music IPs, it's time to make use of it.
  • VicViper #88 3 years ago

In part this seems a good move for Sony, I mean its Ghostbusters the Game ,the all singing all dancing HD version, and if you want to play it in the near future then you need to have a Playstation system to play it. It will at least sell to PS3 owners and maybe, just maybe, sell a few systems here and there.

In another part this screws anyone who pre-ordered it for thier non-Sony system and this move is not likely to get them to buy a PS3 and quite possibly sour them against the game when it hits thier current system (be that 360 or Wii).

I remember when a few Sony franchises went multi-platform ace combat, DMC and final fantasy and the Sonynauts were pretty unhappy and vocal there, don't think I've ever seen Microsoft/Nintendo get exclusivity a month or two before release. The GTA IV DLC is slightly similar I guess, would need to find out how much Sony forked out for this compare to the 50mil that MS did for that and Sony fans were certainly not pleased with that situation either.
  • Erebu #89 3 years ago

    @ farticusmaximus

Fuck you arsehole, you started with the namecalling and angy rants.
Atari is still publishing it multiplatform in NA and the EU deal is timed because of the BD release.
But hey just keep on ignoring these news you twat.
  • Erebu #90 3 years ago

    @ VicViper

I doubt they payed money but rather they will use the game and the BDmovie in a crosspromotion campaign.
And also use this as a survey if the Ghostbusters franchise is still alive and kicking.
Hell we might even see Ghostbusters 3 in two years!?
  • chubster2010 #91 3 years ago

    Did not see that coming.

Part of me thinks 'Haha - Good to see Microsoft getting a taste of their own medicine', but the more reasonable side of me thinks that this is just another slightly depressing case of a platform holder trying to buy success.

If the game is ready for all the platforms, release it on all platforms. Sony have more than enough quality product on the way this year without having to resort to this.

  • DrDamn #92 3 years ago

Often wondered why Sony don't do this with more stuff they own the IP for, seems like the various arms of the company don't talk that often. I guess it has usually been that the film arm would make more licensing cash by going multiplatform. Even back in the PSOne days Sony tended to be fairly prudent with making money where possible - Wipeout on the Saturn anyone?

There is quite a big distinction between a title you've paid up front for and snatching one so late on in the dev cycle though. Maybe this represents a change in tack following leadership changes? The first of many bought exclusives or a blip?
  • EvilBob_leeds #93 3 years ago

There is quite a big distinction between a title you've paid up front for and snatching one so late on in the dev cycle

If the title was going to be made anyway, I don't see the distiction between moneyhatting an exclusive at the begining of development or at the end. Both are as bad as each other.
  • DrDamn #94 3 years ago

Because the title build up has been going on for months as a multiplatform title with no hint of exclusivity. They are just pissing off people even more.
  • ChuckNorris #95 3 years ago

farty makes me laugh. I can picture him all red cheeked, huffing and puffing, typing really really fast. That's so cute.
  • ronuds #96 3 years ago

360 owners, don't be upset. This will inevitably suck. Pretty surprised Sony decided to do this now.

btw, before you call me a fanboy, I've been saying this will suck since day 1.
  • Goodfella #97 3 years ago

That's ok then, if ronuds says it will suck then it will.

All bow to ronuds and his predictive powers.
  • Al_Swearengen #98 3 years ago

Lol at all the banter in here.
I don't mind that Sony are doing this overall, my feelings on exclusivity aside, but what is wrong and what some people from the PS3-camp can't seem to grasp, is their timing.
Yes Microsoft have had plenty of exclusives but in every case that I can think of they have secured the rights and made public announcements to that effect, well in advance of release. Not one month before the game is due on store sehelves and yank the rug from under the people who planned to pick it up.

And the fact that this effects European gamers only is just beyond bizarre. This is a total dick move on Sony's part, whether they own the IP or not.

Remember kiddies, "Democracy is truth, communism is death!"
  • Goodfella #99 3 years ago

Yes but all of you are just guessing as to the reasons, who says Sony are deliberately witholding the other versions?

Dumpest statement I've read so far in this thread. The Phil thing was pretty stupid but this just took that and went to personal levels of stupidity. Nice one Trebell. Way to let your paronoid delusions *cough* fanboy *cough* influence your views there.
  • tonynibbles #103 3 years ago

I think some people are looking at this from the wrong angle...
  • Rash' #104 3 years ago

The multiplat owners bemoaning the underhanded tactics really need to get a grip on reality. You're consumers of videogames. Not voters in an election. Buy the fucking game if you want it and offer something of note to the thhread. The obvious example being this is a coup for Sony. Not FFXIII level but still a significant deal to help influence sales.
  • bad09 #105 3 years ago

    @ Rash'

would you feel the same if you didn't own a PS3, I doubt it.....

I own both consoles so don't care in that sense if I want it next month I could buy it, but still it IS underhand (so I won't be buying it at all for new) and the comments are reflecting that.
  • Rash' #106 3 years ago

bad09, Yes I would because I don't give a shit about the politics of the games any more. Better things for me to worry about in life. This is just entertain after all. As you're a multiplat owner I find you're annoyance ridiculous. If you are in a position to enjoy something you want, when you want it, enjoy it. If not... so be it. That's the unfortunate crap we gamers have to put up with. Content exclusive to specific platforms is backwards as far as I'm concerned. You can't win them all. I'm happy for example to wait for Tales of Vesperia. That's just the way this shit goes. You on the other hand can enjoy them all yet sit there with your high and might "this is underhanded tactics" proclamation like a moral victory. For a videogame I find your stance stupefying.
  • bad09 #107 3 years ago

    @ Rash'

Well I always think as a consumer and try to make good consumer decisions (well except the couple of times I cracked and bought DLC). Like I said, yeah I could buy and play, but I won't because as a consumer I find it quite disgusting Atari and Sony should pull this so close to release.

I said earlier today, I have no problem with exclusive titles or timed exclusives, but a month before it was due on everything? Frankly I am amazed ANYONE is OK with this (except the SDF of course).

(besides I can't buy now! After this and all the other underhand things today bad09 decided 2nd hand gaming only until the industry fixes up)
  • Charlie_Miso #108 3 years ago

These comments will be more entertaining than the game itself.
  • man.the.king #109 3 years ago

    @designerheadache

"good to see Sony growing some balls and finally playing Microsoft at their own game, instead of this "we dont pay for exclusives" nonsense"

While it may still be "good business", Microsoft's strategy of bribing to secure exclusives was unethical (in my opinion, mind), and Sony following in their footsteps doesn't make that strategy right.

Oh well ... maybe I'm just an idealist.

By the way, is the game any good (I haven't followed any hands-on or seen any screenshots or videos, so don't know)?

"farty makes me laugh. I can picture him all red cheeked, huffing and puffing, typing really really fast. That's so cute."

LOL. Man oh man! That is exactly what I think of when I see his EVIL-SONY-pant-pant-huff-huff rants and try to picture him.

    RE: Phil and his tactics

Its a bit pointless going all conspiracy on this sort of thing. What next, accusing Valve of favouring the 360 because they all come from Microsoft?

Also didn't a bizarre regional lockout of a platform happen with Outrun recently, just dropped near to release. Or is that acceptable as it doesn't affect 'us'?
  • bad09 #112 3 years ago

Widge what happened with Outrun then? I didn't here that one.
  • Widge #113 3 years ago

I think it suddenly got announced that then US would not be getting a PS3 PSN version. (unless someone can correct me on that)

Why on earth, I have no idea.
  • Widge #114 3 years ago

  • bad09 #115 3 years ago

Wow that is rubbish, another reason to add to the boycott list!

Already bought Outrun on launch day though so can't undo that!
  • Widge #116 3 years ago

I know its not as 'big' a release as Ghostbusters, but still. Most people reacted \o/ Europe! so don't know how the US took it.

You can understand stuff like the MS and Sony first party stuff staying single platform, but a big movie tie in is weird. Also keeping an eye on Mass Effect 2 to see if that gets announced on the PS3 without porting the first one. That would be odd. I occasionally put Bethesda (for shoddy bugs) and Valve on my boycott list, and then their games appear with massive money slashed off so I feel compelled to buy!
  • bad09 #117 3 years ago

Yeah I don't reckon the yanks were too happy!

I think the Valve attitude is a little out of order, but wasn't it that they hate the system as it's too complicated? If a company chooses "nah not on that platform too much effort" it's fair enough, although I never did like the PS3 Orange Box mess, and thought it was pretty wrong (although isn't that EA's fault with their crap port?).
  • Widge #118 3 years ago

Oh yeah, I took it at face value as they said until I was watching a documentary on Half Life 2 which started off with "well we all used to work at Microsoft but went off to start our own company and they gave us masses of help with creating Half Life...".

Mah, but there is no point going down that route, its just as bad getting in a sweat about Phil being ex-Sony. I suppose at the end of the day, I've got a PC, I'm still playing L4D.

I think EA managed to sort their port out in the end, but I had already got the GOTY edition by that point and was playing DODs more than anything else the HL2 package offered me, so didn't really care!
  • EvilBob_leeds #119 3 years ago

To be honest all this reminds of of a Bender quote; "This is the worst kind of discrimination. The kind against ME". Did all the 360 owners stand on their morals and boycott Rockband when Microsoft pulled this same trick? Did they buggery.

Moneyhatting exclusives is moneyhatting exclusives, and whether its done at the 11th hour or not is kind of irrelevant - it's a move designed to piss off owners of console x in the hope that they'll be so deperate to play the game they'll buy console y. Doing this at the last minute is a pretty obvious addition to this, since people will've already got it into their heads that really want the game. But at the end of the day it's the same old bullshit - owners of console y where going to get the game anyway, so they're no better off, owners of console x get shafted. All in all gamers lose out.

Personally I'd be a lot happier if Sony and MS packed this shit in and used the money to develop decent 1st / 2nd party games. And if you want to stand on your morals and send out a message to everyone concerned, stop buying any paid for 3rd party exclusives, don't lap it up when MS do it and then piss and moan when Sony try the same trick.

"man.the.king is just as simple, and just as guilty of derailing this thread.
Why don't you both grow up and shut up, or maybe even grow a set of balls and try debating the issues instead of the thread personalities?"

Oh I see. You were having a debate? And there I was, completely under the impression that farty was having another of his rants.
I guess maybe "Fuck you Sony, fuck you very much", "Learn to be relevant, asshole.", "Oh, and just in case you missed it the first time: FUCK SONY! ", "FUCK SONY and FUCK YOU", and "LOL!!!!!!!1111 " (all of them by you in this thread) count as good points for debate and a civil discussion in your book. Tell me, did you develop this vocabulary on your beloved XBL?

"That's not going to happen though is it children? No, you will retort with some 'witty' (read: utterly childish) drivel. Prove me wrong and act your age, please. "

YOU try and act your age fir... Oops excuse me - I see you already were.

    @farticusmaximus

My on-topic comments are already available on this thread, on this very page.

However, I entirely understand that people like you are impervious to any sort of logic whatsoever - case in point: ALL the PS3 and PS3-exclusive related articles that you troll on despite being a 360-only "gamer" and I use that word very loosely in your case.

Moreover, debate means a civil exchange of ideas - not rants and "fuckathons". I can swear too. But I see no point in indulging in the same and calling that a "debate".

Enjoy your rants mate! I'll enjoy reading them, that's for sure.

I understand this is a very raw subject, but are the yanks not getting a blue-ray release of the films?? If they are why the hell are Sony not restricting the game in the states as well. Don't give to much of a toss about timed exclusives either way what pisses me of the most is the fact that good olde rip off Britain gets fucked over again...
Is the market over here that important that they only want uk/euro PS3/2 owers to buy the game and movies. Would have thought that this restrictive practise would have had more merit in home territory, you know Hollywood being in the states game and movie based in the states.
Is the fate of the 3rd film really going to hinge on how one region sales go down, would have thought that would be read from as much sales as poss not by cutting out revenue/sales!
Just seems like we're being pissed on from a great hight as per bloody usual! If they want the exclusive I'm all for it but to rob the UK and still keep it for the yanks that is what sucks the most for me. Yeah I'm a 360 owner I don't care about that, i'm in this for the region not the console.

  • DrDamn #123 3 years ago

The real story behind all this ... link

Not so much Sony buying the exclusive but stepping to save the PS releases from a delay that was going to affect all versions.
