Sony extends PS3 Platinum range

MGS4! MotorStorm 2! Resistance 2! KZ2!

Sony has added four more PlayStation 3 heavyweights to the Platinum Hits range of games.

Excellent, 9/10 shooters Killzone 2 and Resistance 2 top the bill, followed by Metal Gear Solid 4 and MotorStorm: Pacific Rift.

Our reviews for each are linked on the game names above.

Each of those titles has sold over 400,000 copies, according to the European PlayStation blog, and so can join the Platinum Hits £19.99 / €29.99 roster.

Already have Netal Gear but will buy the other 3. Are they out soon?
  • MiniAmin #2 2 years ago

I wonder how this will affect the attach rate for PS3 - i'm guessing most PS3 owners already had these titles. I'll expect to see some of these games re-appear in the charts as people with PS3 slims start picking them up.

    Good move.
  • Colin8703 #3 2 years ago

They came out last Friday or at least Killzone 2 did.
  • johnboy_johsnon #4 2 years ago

Killzone 2 is cheaper than this to buy from sendit.com. Unfortunately Sony seems to be adopting a pretty crappy exchange rate for the €.
  • Fletche #5 2 years ago

Killzone and Motorstorm for me then, will keep me going until Uncharted 2 comes along.

Well they do have a sale on and the RRP is listed @ £19.99. Thats just the way it is. Nothing to do with any exchange rates.
  • tossetaz #7 2 years ago

lord, yeah something like that, I was a bit surprised too, especially considering LBP is getting platinum aswell... same time as it getting goty
  • systems #8 2 years ago

@Lord - to join the platinum range needs a certain number of sales, not an amount of time. Killzone 2 is new but has already qualified for platinum.
  • patch #9 2 years ago

Any word on the next batch of platinums (inFamous etc.)? There must be something on the rumour mill, as this story was around 3 weeks ago. Could you also confirm whether all games selling over 400,000 copies are going platinum, or is that the justification in this case only?

Edit: @tossetaz, LBP GOTY (catchy eh?) is only planned for release in North America, for the moment at least. Also, am I correct in thinking that platinums are decided on a per-region basis? So these are platinum in Europe only? Is this an indication we won't be seeing the GOTY edition over here? Many questions need asking please Rob :)

Did Folklore ever get a reisue at PLatinum prices? I think it did in the US.
  • TopKatt #11 2 years ago

Been meaning to get Resistance 2 for ages, glad I held off now! Never really been a fan of the Metal Gear series but I'm tempted to give MGS4 a go at that price.
  • tossetaz #12 2 years ago

@patch oh I didn't know that!! I guess i'll buy the original used then.

anyone know if it's posible (in LBP) to play levels that use the dlc without owning the dlc?

    @beastmaster

'Netal Gear'? Is this a pre-release version for the 360's hand-waving device?
  • MeBrains #14 2 years ago

wow. surprising to see Sony give platinum to a few of their best, yet fairly recent exclusives. this means that new slim adopters have an absolutely well priced means to experience PS3 at its best. I suppose this further enhances Sony's position in the run up to Xmas... as well as beyond.
  • MeBrains #15 2 years ago

on a side-note (posted seperately so you can mark down / up content seperately one from the other) - compare KZ2's platinum status to Mario Galaxy's lack of it. Not only has Ninty not reduced its price for the 'old-tech' console, it has not or has barely done so with its 'age-old' exclusives either.

/me's liking ninty less and less for its corporate practices... a shame joe public doesn't really see any of this...
  • wizlon #16 2 years ago

gaah, I really want Resistance 2 but I hate buying those platinum/classics games because of the ugly boxes...I keep telling myself that the game is the same and it's just the box and cover art that's different. I know I'm a gaming snob... but that's just the way I am... I can never change :_(
  • MeBrains #17 2 years ago

lord: I do agree with you, yet I do also suppose that a title like KZ2 for example would continue to sell bucketloads - given the (or my) expected and sustained increase in sales of the platform. I can not imagine that Mario Galaxy still sells the numbers it once had, yet Nintendo refuses to mark down (I say this while knowing that - should it still be selling, this argument is void). My very personal look at it is: Ninty milks customers on the console, as well as on its own IP's, but I can not blame them getting away with it.

I guess Sony's primary goal with this is to give great games at a great price in order to boost sales of the console - not so much of the games. edit: in other words: it is part of positioning the console (which is "affordable" now) as well as some of its best games (which are "cheap" now), both in the run-up to Xmas.

@mr_writer: Thanks for your answer, I hope there's plenty of wonderful levels that doesn't require any dlc at all!? :)
  • Arwin #19 2 years ago

No need to buy LBP used, sites like http://www.play.com have been selling the game for 23,49 euro for ages!
  • JonFE #20 2 years ago

Nintendo first party games rarely drop in price (also witnessed in the GC-era) and its Player's Choice line still hasn't been revived for the Wii; on the contrary Nintendo went a step beyond and started a new trend with its New Play Control! line :)
  • cianchristopher #21 2 years ago

Its not a good thing to see Killzone 2 join the Platinum range so soon after its launch. That means one thing an one thing only - sales of it were disappointing for Sony. Clearly, this is a move to boost sales. Compare this with Call of Duty 4 (kinda unfair, I know) that game is almost 2 years old and shows no sign of joining the Platinum/Classics range. Many may say that this is indicative of Activision's greed, but they likely would have allowed it were sales not so strong.

Also, it took Halo 3 a full 18 months to join the Xbox 360's classics range. Which seems to be about the normal length of time for most games.

Still can't believe Resistance 2 got 9/10 - its one of the worst games I've ever played in my life (and I'm a fairly easy-going guy, I'll see the positives in most things)! This game is an abomination!
  • tossetaz #22 2 years ago

@Arwin: Yeah your right, just found it at a danish online-retailer for 17,34€
  • kangarootoo #23 2 years ago

    @lord

Perhaps in order to be considered for the platinum range, a game needs to make certain sales targets. That isn't necessarily to say that as soon as it makes said targets, it will automatically be entered into the range.

And of course its a sales exercise. What aspect of selling games isn't?
  • TopKatt #24 2 years ago

    @Wizlon

Now Resistance 2 is in the platinum range you'll easily be able to find the non-platinum release on sale at the same price in just about any games shop on the high street.
  • mclovin69 #25 2 years ago

Isn't it fairly common knowledge that littlebig planet bombed, motorstorm 2 wasn't much better and kz2 died a death after its first week? lbp and motorstorm 2 have been £20 in most shops since jan/feb brand new.

Hopefully people do pick up lbp and ms2 though-great games imo :-)
  • Emth #26 2 years ago

Is this active now? I want to go trade in fifa09 before the 10 demo comes out on Thursday as I'm guessing prices will tail off dramatically after that.
  • patch #27 2 years ago

I thought Killzone 2 sold well? Wasn't it something like 4th fastest selling Sony game, and shifted a million copies in 1 1/2 months? AFAIK LBP had over a million by end of 2008. Guess that could be called poor sales though(?).
  • M_of_the_sys #28 2 years ago

Sony should've kept this quiet and then done it just before Christmas. They can't keep anything quiet though.
  • JahB #29 2 years ago

I agree about LBP and KILLZONE2 sales cant have been anyway near what sony thought they would be dropping the prices so soon

Of course the sales must have been bad. It's utterly unthinkable that both these games sold more than enough to cover their development budgets and are now sold at a lower price to shift a bigger number of copies.

You should stop assuming Donnie, since your assumptions are usually full of fail.
  • Rose-of-Sorrow #30 2 years ago

Metal Gear Solid 4 was already part of the platinum range- I bought it in April and have the platinum release.
  • jamhead #31 2 years ago

I think this is great news. I just picked up Uncharted: Drakes Fortune for under £15 on Amazon and am loving it. I if I can get Killzone 2 and Motorstorm 2 for the same then they are definite purchases for me as well. I actually feel like the price of my (phat) PS3 is finally justified. Seems the PS3 game library is starting to mature into something a little more credible (at least if you are a tight-arse like me)!
  • Mnia786 #32 2 years ago

I hate buying platinums for one reason: the case is tacky. I could have got Oblivion GoY for 8 quid new plat but the higher resell value of a non-plat made me buy it for a tenner non plat
  • M_of_the_sys #33 2 years ago

    @Mnia786

Yeah. It's not very subtle is it? BIG SILVER CASE!
  • makeamazing #34 2 years ago

@Donnie, stop worrying about Sony and be happy that some great (KZ2, LBP) and other games have been released as Platinum... ok you might be able to pick some of these games up alittle cheaper elsewhere but isnt it a GOOD thing that they have been repackaged and are cheaper? Is this not good for PS3 owners?

    Seriously you are depressing...lol.

As for Sales of LBP and KZ2, they were not massive as they probably hoped, but they werent bad sales. LBP did over a million, your telling me thats a bad number? It isnt trust me, especially for the size of team Media Molecule is. As for KZ2, you think its just about the game right? Its also about creating a Current/Next generation game engine... you cant do that on the cheap. This wont be the only game they use it on, and i would suspect KZ3 will be alot cheaper to make because of it.

"Metal Gear Solid 4 was already part of the platinum range- I bought it in April and have the platinum release."

    Only in Europe.
  • Burkey123 #36 2 years ago

Might pick up Killzone 2 now. Been putting it off for a while but now I've no excuse.
  • J-B #37 2 years ago

Resistance 2 a 9/10 game...dont make me laugh. Anyway this platinum range is a bit un-necessary, what with most shops already selling the game for that price either new or pre-owned, and sites like ebay shifting copies for around £15 tops.
  • Johnsters #38 2 years ago

Resistance 2 was okay, just a little linear. some nice set pieces, and a modest Multiplayer that I never got into.
MGS4 and Motor Storm are definitely worth your cash.
I like the idea of platinum, as there are games that score 7/8 out of 10 that I would not buy full price.

I picked up Bioshock and Deadspace for £15 each off Play.com and will be looking forward to picking up Infamous/Prototype and Red Faction when they are similar price. (did notice Red faction is £23 on Amazon though)

I've just got a PS3 and I hate these Platinum titles (hate the 360 Classics too), so fucking ugly. Such a pain in the arse to find copies of the originals in good condition as well ie. Uncharted and MGS 4.

Why not just lower the RRP? What is the need to have a very badly designed cover and tacky case on the shelf advertising your greatest games?

  • cianchristopher #40 2 years ago

Good to see I'm not the only one who hates Classics/Platinum artwork and cases. I refuse to have them. I'll buy the original version or I won't buy it at all. Luckily for me, I've been able to find everything I wanted at reasonable prices.

For instance, last week was in Tesco and saw a brand-new and sealed copy of Uncharted (original edition) for the same price as the Platinum beside it. Nice find, as that version is rare these days.

Also, if you're buying a game brand-new, you have the right to insist on it being sealed. I *hate* shops like GAME and HMV that give you the disc & manual in a little plastic bag along with the box taken off the shelf. Terrible!
  • TheApologist #41 2 years ago

Why don't they stick the platinum range on PSN? More chance of an impulse purchase from me if they were...
  • soviet_ #42 2 years ago

@cianchristopher, yeah it's really annoying when they open the box at Game, there's no need! I rarely buy from them anymore because ShopTo kick their ass on prices. I had to buy a used copy of Uncharted from eBay as no shops near me have the original, hopefully it will be in good condition
  • owl #43 2 years ago

i wish they were still primarily grey boxes, the new yellow colour looks cheap and nasty. at least the grey ones had a bit of class, like they were penguin classics or something.
